The names are created in the Congressional legislation authorizing the sites or by the president, who proclaims "national monuments" under the Antiquities Act of 1906. Many names are descriptive -- lakeshores, seashores, battlefields --but others cannot be neatly categorized because of the diversity of resources within them. In 1970, Congress elaborated on the 1916 National Park Service Organic Act, saying all units of the system have equal legal standing in a national system. National Park [NP] These are generally large natural places having a wide variety of attributes, at times including significant historic assets. Hunting, mining and consumptive activities are not authorized. National Monument [NM] The Antiquities Act of 1906 authorized the President to declare by public proclamation landmarks, structures, and other objects of historic or scientific interest situated on lands owned or controlled by the government to be national monuments. National Historic Site [NHS] Usually, a national historic site contains a single historical feature that was directly associated with its subject. Derived from the Historic Sites Act of 1935, a number of historic sites were established by secretaries of the Interior, but most have been authorized by acts of Congress. National Historic Park [NHP] This designation generally applies to historic parks that extend beyond single properties or buildings. National Memorial [NMem] A national memorial is commemorative of a historic person or episode; it need not occupy a site historically connected with its subject. National Battlefield [NB] This general title includes national battlefield, national battlefield park, national battlefield site, and national military park. In 1958, an NPS committee recommended national battlefield as the single title for all such park lands. Other Designations [OD] Some units of the National Park System bear unique titles or combinations of titles, like the White House. The surgeon performs an orchiectomy at center. The blood-stained drapes form a mound that is both a volcano and a pyramid, images seen at the top registers of the south and north walls of the courtyard. Arrays of organs surround the surgeon’s hands: base of brain with pituitary in center; digestive organs and endocrine glands to the left; male and female reproductive structures and breast to the right. Note the duodenum to the left; a pipe in the assembly line has the same configuration. Juxtaposition of female and male repro- ductive organs reflects the androgyny of the titans on the top registers of both walls. Culture Source advocates and supports many of the great arts and culture nonprofits located Southeast Michigan. There are roughly 120 nonprofit members of Culture Source, ranging from the Henry Ford to MOCAD to Pewabic Pottery. Our challenge will enhance their new marketing and fundraising campaign, which launches in 2014. The Fellows will - BLAST provide data and ideas to help market the campaign towards young creative adults who live in Detroit and Southeast Michigan. We will uncover what young creative adults see as challenges when attending cultural engagements and if these barriers prevent them from attending other events. Similarly, the Fellows will find young creative adult’s motivation for getting involved in cultural activities and what can currently be tweaked to make cultural events more enjoyable. This retrospective features the prolific history of Detroit’s ceramic icon, Pewabic Pottery. Under the direction of founder Mary Chase Perry Stratton, Pewabic Pottery produced nationally renowned vessels, tiles, architectural ornamentation for public and private installations. Works by Pewabic Pottery can be seen throughout the United States in such places as the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., the Nebraska Sate Capital, and the Science Building at Rice University in Houston. In Michigan, Pewabic installations can be found in countless churches, commercial buildings and public facilities (such as the Guardian Building, the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport, the Detroit Public Library, Comerica Park, and Detroit People Mover stations. Pewabic Pottery can also be found in many public collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Freer Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. Today Pewabic is a multifaceted non-profit ceramic education institution with active and growing education, exhibition, museum and design and fabrication programs. Free and open to the public, it offers tours, demonstrations.   • Each Spring, Friends of the Rouge, in Partnership with Communities And
    Each spring, Friends of the Rouge, in partnership with communities and other organizations throughout the Rouge, brings volunteers together from across the watershed to work toward the common goal of improving the Rouge River for generations to come. This annual event, known as Rouge Rescue, began in 1986 with volunteers removing large quantities of trash from the river. As river sites improved, public perception of the river shifted away from the thought that the river was just an open sewer and a place to dump trash. Today, much of the event is focused on river restoration and volunteers also work to remove invasive plants from the river corridor, install native plantings and stabilize stream banks to improve the health of the river. This year’s Rouge Rescue t-shirt graphic was created by our Rouge Rescue Intern, Dana Wloch. The image demonstrates what we are all working for—a clean and healthy river teaming with life. Rouge Rescue attracted 1,400 volunteers who participated in river cleanup and stewardship activities at 36 work sites in 20 municipalities. Activities were scheduled on multiple dates. The main event was held on Saturday May 30. Twenty-nine (29) sites worked on this date. Four sites worked early (E.L. Johnson Nature Center 5/2, Holliday Nature Preserve 5/9, Cranbrook Institute of Science 5/14 and Hoover Elementary/Dynamite Park 5/21). Three sites worked on June 6 (Linden Park, AISIN/ Northville Twp. and Beech Woods Recreation Center). Three new sites joined in the effort (Rouge Valley Parkway in northwest Detroit, AISIN Corporate Headquarters in Northville Twp.
