The Tennessee Association of Museums was established in 1960, though the bulk of this collection begins with records from 1961. The first records for the annual meetings of the organization, which were held in various cities across the state each year, begin in 1962. The records from 1960-1980 mainly consist of correspondence, financial records, and meeting records. The bulk of the

1

collection consists of items related to the Award of Merit program that began in 1980.

The Award of Merit/Excellence program began in 1980 as a way of rewarding museums across the state for activities undertaken within their respective museums. Award nominations were submitted by the museums in different categories and were then evaluated by a committee of the Association for determination of winners in the different categories, such as exhibits, publications, and outreach projects undertaken by each museum. Along with the nomination form for an award, many museums also sent in supporting materials to help demonstrate exactly what activities took place within their institution. These supporting materials includes items such as a blanket, brochures and pamphlets, photographs, posters, slides, a t-shirt, and audio/video materials. The Award submissions cover a wide range of topics, of both Tennessee based products and themes as well as international art exhibits that were brought to institutions in Tennessee for exhibition.

Administrative/Biographical History

The Tennessee Association of Museums was established in 1960 as an organization of Tennessee museums and historical societies concerned with historical documentation and presentation. The first Constitution and By-Laws for the organization were adopted in 1961. In the early years of the organization the purpose of the organization was to gather museums across the state together to develop ideas for exhibits on a state-wide basis as well as to help with the development of smaller museums across the state. In 1978 the Constitution and 2

By-Laws were amended and designated the organization name as the Tennessee Association of Museums, Incorporated. In 1980 the association created the Award of Merit/Excellence program as a way of rewarding museums across the state for activities undertaken within their respective museums. The association is still thriving as of 2011 and does periodically donate additional materials to the State Library and Archives. The association also currently has a web site.
