Epic Fail- The
Epic Fail: Électricité de France and the “Evolutionary Power Reactor” Beyond Nuclear, February 2015 Electricité de France (EdF), the French nationalized electricity utility, banked its nuclear future on the European Pressurized Reactor (EPR) design from Areva (also an almost entirely government-owned corporation.) But the promise for this most “revolutionary” generation III+ reactor has instead disintegrated into an epic tale of failure. The EPR -- known in the U.S. as the “Evolutionary Power Reactor” -- was touted as the newest, most improved reactor design. Areva claimed the EPR would be “a reactor with an unparalleled level of security, extremely resistant to both internal and external risks.” A total of seven EPR units were originally slated to be built in the U.S at: Bruneau, Idaho; Calvert Cliffs, Maryland; Nine Mile Point, New York; Callaway, Missouri; Bell Bend, Pennsylvania; and Victoria Co., Texas (2 units.) See the Beyond Nuclear booklet -- STOP EPR. Four more were slated for the Darlington site in Ontario, Canada but none are moving forward today. The end of EdF’s North American misadventure came in October 2010 when EdF’s American partner, Constellation Energy, pulled out of the EPR “reference” reactor project at the Calvert Cliffs, Maryland site. Faced with no U.S. partners, EdF could no longer comply with the Atomic Energy Act that forbids sole foreign ownership, although this may yet be undermined by efforts of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to undo it -- a move that could gain support in the Republican majority House and Senate. Today, there are precisely zero EPR reactors under construction in the U.S. -

An Analysis of Hegemonic Social Structures in "Friends"
"I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU" IF YOU ARE JUST LIKE ME: AN ANALYSIS OF HEGEMONIC SOCIAL STRUCTURES IN "FRIENDS" Lisa Marie Marshall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2007 Committee: Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor Audrey E. Ellenwood Graduate Faculty Representative James C. Foust Lynda Dee Dixon © 2007 Lisa Marshall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season. -
Night Visit Standing on the Curb Outside Baggage Claim at LAX, I Shifted the Weight of My Overnight Bag on My Shoulder, Looking for My Brother, Peter
Night Visit Standing on the curb outside baggage claim at LAX, I shifted the weight of my overnight bag on my shoulder, looking for my brother, Peter. His white Toyota nosed its way through the congested airport traffic, and there he was! Blond and blue, eyes bright and twinkling as usual, skin clear, his handsome face crossed with only the smallest lines betraying the fact that he was at the tail end of his forties. We hugged and laughed, smiling into one another's eyes. Parting, I slipped my bag to the pavement, we grasped hands and jumped in a small circle as we did when we were children. He, still, eternally boyish. As for me, well, I’ve always been loathe to give up my "Peter Pan complex". He's my Peter, and I one of his lost boys, even if I am his older sister. Or maybe I’m his Wendy-bird: forever pre-pubescent innocents, I followed him, and we ran away from Florida to California, our Never-land. My sister's eyes, anxious but furtive, searched for signs of failing. Peter had been living with AIDS for such a long time now. Thankfully, as usual, I found myself relieved by his apparent glowing health. While I’d grabbed the brass ring, blue chip law firm, partner, fancy schmancy - since shortly after graduating from law school himself, Peter has been on disability. I feel it’s incumbent upon me to share the wealth and, while appreciating the help, I know he could care less about the money. -

(2017). “My” hero or epic fail? Torchwood as transnational telefantasy. Palabra Clave, 20(3), 722-762. DOI: 10.5294/pacla.2017.20.3.7 Abstract Telefantasy series Torchwood (2006–2011, multiple production partners) was industrially and paratextually positioned as being Welsh, despite its frequent status as an international co-production. When, for series 4 (sub- titled Miracle Day, much as the miniseries produced as series 3 was subti- tled Children of Earth), the production (and diegesis) moved primarily to the United States as a co-production between BBC Worldwide and Amer- ican premium cable broadcaster Starz, fan response was negative from the announcement, with the series being termed Americanised in popular and academic discourse. This study, drawn from my doctoral research, which interrogates all of these assumptions via textual, industrial/contextual and audience analysis focusing upon ideological, aesthetic and interpretations of national identity representation, focuses upon the interactions between fan cultural capital and national cultural capital and how those interactions impact others of the myriad of reasons why the (re)glocalisation failed. It finds that, in part due to the competing public service and commercial ide- ologies of the BBC, Torchwood was a glocalised text from the beginning, de- spite its positioning as Welsh, which then became glocalised again in series 4. -
House Md Season 2 Episode 2 Autopsy
House md Season 2 episode 2 Autopsy This episode is all about what make life worth living even in the face of death Synopsis Andy is a nine year old girl with terminal cancer. She is seen at the beginning of the episode singing Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful as she puts on a wig and smiles at herself in the mirror. But she has a frightening hallucination and has to go to hospital where she becomes Dr House’s patient. Dr House is not just bothered about her condition but about why she is so brave, helping her mother cope with the worry and fears about her illness and comforting her. Dr House doesn’t believe that a nine year old can be that brave and thinks it’s a symptom of disease. During one procedure where Dr Chase is performing the tests, Andy says she has never kissed a boy and wonders what it would be like. Dr Chase says there is plenty of time for that, but Andy says she may die without ever having experienced kissing a boy. She asks Dr Chase to kiss her. Dr Chase says no at first, but changes his mind and kisses her gently on the lips. Back in the office, the team speculate whether Andy has ever been sexually molested which Dr Chase denies saying that he believed her when she said she’d never been kissed. Dr House is cynical and says she’s learned how to manipulate people from being abused then correctly guesses that Dr Chase kissed her when she asked. -

Scene on Radio The Second Revolution (Season 4, Episode 4): Transcript http://www.sceneonradio.org/s4-e4-the-second-revolution/ John Biewen: A content warning: This episode includes descriptions of intense violence. John Biewen: In 1829, the black American writer David Walker published his book, An Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World. David Walker [voiceover]: The whites have always been an unjust, jealous, unmerciful, avaricious and blood-thirsty set of beings, always seeking after power and authority…. John Biewen: Walker’s Appeal was one of the most radical abolitionist statements in antebellum America. He condemned the people who called themselves white for their cruel commitment to enslaving black people, and he called on enslaved people to revolt against their masters. Walker also suggested white people deserved punishment from on high. David Walker: I declare, it does appear to me, as though some nations think God is asleep, or that he made the Africans for nothing else but to dig their mines 1 and work their farms, or they cannot believe history, sacred or profane. I ask every man who has a heart, and is blessed with the privilege of believing—Is not God a God of justice to all his creatures? [Music] John Biewen: Other leading abolitionists of the 19th century, including Frederick Douglass and John Brown, voiced some version of this idea: that slavery violated God’s law, or natural law, and white Americans would someday pay for this great sin. It took the cataclysm of the Civil War to bring a white American president to a similar view.
