Connerly Imprimis February 2000 Volume 29, Number 2 IMPRIMISBecause Ideas Have Consequences 940,000940,000 Readerrs The Content of Our Children’s Character Ward Connerly Chairman, American Civil Rights Institute WARD CONNERLY, author of a just-released autobiography, Creating Equal: My Fight Against Race Preferences, is founder and chairman of the American Civil Rights Institute, a national nonprofit organization aimed at educating the public about genuine nondiscrimination. Mr. Connerly was appointed to a 12-year term on the board of regents of the University of California in 1993. Two years later, he led the successful effort to eliminate the consideration of race, gender, and ethnic origin in the admissions, contracting, and employment activities of the university. In 1995, he became statewide chairman of the California Civil Rights Initiative (CCRI). In 1996, in one of the biggest news stories of the decade, the initiative was overwhelm- ingly approved by voters. A nationally recognized housing expert and a director of the California Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Connerly is also president and chief exec- utive officer of Connerly and Associates, a Sacramento consulting firm that special- izes in land use planning and development. Popular cartoons such as the Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, and the Boondocks are known to have created controversy through episodes that feature satire on political, social, and racial issues. While all four of these cartoons have satirical content, the Boondocks and South Park dedicate the majority of their satire each episode toward one main issue. It would be interesting to see if (1) there are racial differences between how whites and blacks view both shows and (2) if the satire featured in these two shows actually exposes society’s foolishness, possibly leading to improvement. It is our hypothesis that through social identification theory, groups will be made through the similarity of race (Tajfel, 1982). This will allow for those who identify with either race, to feel more positively toward the show of their own race. Comedy Central’s South Park is a satirical, animated show, made for mature audiences created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Although the show is thought by some to be incredibly offensive, the creators explain that there is an underlying moral lesson. The show follows four characters that live in the fictional predominantly white town of South Park, Colorado.

One primary purpose of this study is to offer a counter argument to the negative conversations that surround The Boondocks comic and animated series. Because most arguments about the text stem from the images and language, the conversations surrounding anything positive or hopeful as it pertains to being a Black male, are left out. Furthermore, this media text is currently not perceived as a reference that can be used as a pedagogical tool. In this qualitative critical media analysis, I sought to answer the question: How does the curriculum of The Boondocks represent issues of race, spirituality, and masculinity? Although The Boondocks is typically understood and critiqued as a Black Nationalist text, I intend to look at the animated series through the lens of race, spirituality and Black Masculinity. I specifically examine the text through the theoretical underpinnings of Critical Media Literacy and Critical Race Theory.

    Williams: The Messianic Zeal: A Case of Radical Aesthetics in Black Cultura The Messianic Zeal: A Case of Radical Aesthetics in Black Cultural Production Daniel L. Williams Abstract This essay examines artwork by popular artists D’Angelo, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar and 2pac Shakur and compares their articulations to a larger discourse of messianic symbolism in (black) American popular culture. In this paper, messianic symbolism is a discursive chain of symbols that invoke the Black experience. Artists extend the legacy of earlier representations of black messianism by similarly representing themselves as Jews, saviors or folk heroes with a specific mission to save a world burdened by racial strife and oppression. These qualities manifest in lyrics, album covers, and other late 20th century rhetoric. In a genre known for moral shortcomings, conversations related to religion topics are less common especially considering the “secularization of the West.”1 The messianic paradigm functions beyond religion and encompasses political conviction. For example, in episode 8, Riley and Granddad work together in order to get free items and services from television programs. For example, Riley has television programs upgrade Granddad’s home and car. However, generally it seems that people (except for Wuncler) do not get away with greed. In episode 8, Granddad is punished for his actions by ending up with a $35,000 bill for his car, as well as broken walls in his house. In episode 5, we see Ed Wuncler III, a wealthy man, and his friend, Gin Rummy, decide to get into a gunfight to steal the beer rather than pay for it – even though they were supposed to be after a murderer. Additional Observations: Episode 5 – The Boondocks (15:05 – 15:39) Wuncler III and his friend, Gin Rummy, choose to go to the gas station for beer rather than address the priority of tracking down the murderer. While at the gas station, they decide to get into a gunfight to steal the beer rather than just pay for it, though Wuncler III is a wealthy white man.
