[email protected] Abstract.—The monotypic Crocodile Lizard (Shinisaurus crocodilurus) is a habitat specialist, adapted to headwaters of remote mountain streams within the tropical rainforests of southern China and northern Vietnam. Due to the anthropogenic pressures namely poaching for international pet trade and local consumption as well as habitat destruction, this living fossil is now at the brink of extinction. While research on natural history had already been conducted on Crocodile Lizards in China and relevant management programs have been established there, comparable knowledge is lacking for Crocodile Lizards in Vietnam. We provide the first comprehensive habitat characterization for Crocodile Lizards in Vietnam, which is essential for species conservation and the protection of remaining natural habitats. Our results showed that perch characterization was different between age classes, and between populations in China and Vietnam. Furthermore, our study found that Crocodile Lizards had specific needs of stream physiology and water quality.
