The Author of the following pages disclaims all intention of offering advice upon the subject of emigration to the American continent. So much has been written on each side of the question, that nothing new could be expected ; and after all, each individual must be guided in a great measure by his own circumstances, and by a thousand private motives, that cannot meet the public eye, but must determine his decision, independently of general advantages or disadvantages. The sea-journal was written to gratify the curiosity and interest of the author's particular friends; as they had also requested some account of the western country, he was induced to draw up the following sketch; and to render it more generally useful, he has added the most authentic accounts of the principal rivers that interest the emigrant. Residing himself upon the banks of the Ohio, and witnessing daily the difficulties of his countrymen in navigating that stream, from their ignorance of its ripples, shallows, and islands, he was induced to supply them vi with the best information he could procure on this subject. He cannot, from his own personal observation, vouch for the accuracy of the description of more than the first hundred miles of the river; but from the information of boatmen and others, who have frequently descended it, he has no doubt of the faithfulness of the description throughout. No persons, except emigrants who embark with their families in the frail vessels built at Pittsburg, can appreciate the value of the river directions. Boats often stay for the night at the head of an island, for want of knowing which channel to take, as the flat-bottomed arks in common use cannot be propelled against the stream; and if they get into a channel which they cannot pursue, the delay and hazard incurred are incalculable. Great numbers of emigrants undertake the management of those awkward boats upon a long, tiresome voyage, and often vii in very bad weather, when the river is full of ice and drift-wood, who are utterly ignorant of the first principles of navigation, or of the management of the lightest skiff that floats. They generally load their boat quite to the gunwale, and go wherever the stream carries them, calling out to persons on shore for directions whenever they perceive an island or a ripple. To these people I know that the slightest sketch of the chief dangers and places they may have to pass, will be acceptable ; and it is for their service I have selected the best accounts. Those who intend to navigate the Ohio, should keep in company with other boats if possible; for with all the instructions that can be given them, they will be frequently at a loss which way to steer or where to land. I cannot take leave of my English friends, without assuring them, that as far as my own experience goes, the climate of the western country is pleasant, healthy, and salubrious; and that I prefer it to the foggy atmosphere and drizzling rains of Great Britain. All my family have experienced uninterrupted health, ever since our arrival; and I believe that by far the greater part of the reports that represent the lower countries viii on the Ohio as unhealthy, are altogether untrue ; or so exaggerated as to give a very false picture of the real state of the country. The natives of this country will not thank me for the way in which I have sometimes mentioned their habits or their manners. And so it is all the world over— climate does not influence moral character, however it may affectmental intellect. I make no apology for the carelessness of the style and composition of these pages. I have other and more important occupations than writing, in providing for a large family, in cultivating the land, and attending the improvement of both. SEA JOURNAL. Liverpool, May 21. 1818. The eventful hour is arrived;—our vessel is going out of dock—all is hurry, bustle, and confusion! The passengers running to and for some taking an affectionate, an everlasting farewell of their kindred and friends; others without a friend to take leave of, standing with a strange, mixture of joy and grief in their countenances, looking a last adijeu to the land of their fathers! Others arriving too late; are making to the vessel in boats, with their last articles of luggage hastily packed up—a strange medley of clothing and provisions—band- boxes and bags of potatoes, legs of mutton, hampers of porter, salt herrings, and barrels of biscuit. Our deck is covered with children of every age, and their parents of every station in society (except perhaps what is called the NOBLE). Pigs and poultry are squeaking and squalling ; the sailors are vociferating and swearing ; numbers of the softer sex B 2 weeping most bitterly; and the scene altogether exhibits such a picture of confusion as would puzzle a Smollet to describe, or a Hogarth to pourtray. This continued for about an hour, when we cast anchor about a mile below the town ; and it was understood, although the wind was now fair, that we should not proceed farther until the morning. The captain and several of the passengers, therefore, went on shore, and others proceeded to establish themselves, as comfortably as they could, in their several births. We soon saw reason to congratulate ourselves upon our choice of a birth; for we had much more room and better air, than if we had been stowed in the state-rooms belonging to the cabin, which at night are occupied by the cabin-passengers ; for nothing can be a greater burlesque upon the name, than those hastily fitted up holes where you have but just room to turn yourself round, and 3 barely height to sit up in bed.

For this purpose, the study of PRRPs is integrated building on concepts elaborated in the field of contentious politics: the political opportunity structure, the mobilizing structure and the framing processes. This work combines these perspectives in order to explain the fluctuating electoral fortune of the Italian Lega Nord at the national level (LN), here considered as a prototypical example of PRRPs. After the first participation in a national government (1994) and its peak in the general election of 1996 (10.1%), the LN electoral performances have been characterised by constant fluctuations. However, the party has managed to survive throughout different phases of the recent Italian political history. Scholars have often explained the party’s electoral success referring to its folkloristic appeal, its regionalist and populist discourses as well as the strong leadership of Umberto Bossi. However, most contributions adopt a static and one-sided analysis of the party performances, without integrating the interplay between political opportunities, organisational resources and framing strategies in a dynamic way. On the contrary, this work focuses on the interplay of exogenous and endogenous factors in accounting for the fluctuating electoral results of the party over three phases: regionalist phase (1990-1995), the move to the right (1998-2003) and the new nationalist period (2012-2018).

I explore the intersection of material feminisms, Latin American decolonial feminism, and sexual difference theory differentially and multiply across contexts. I revisit histories of women and texts - French, Italian and Brazilian - that are multiply and differentially marginalized in the current Western feminist narrative framework - in order to create sources of alternative knowledge and create an opportunity for something new to emerge symbio-creatively from these points of contact. Chapter One covers the genesis of European feminist approaches to Lispector’s oeuvre in France, the impassioned reading by Hélène Cixous of Lispector’s work, and also provides vital counter-memory, decolonial feminist stories on Brazilian and Latin American feminisms which have been left out of the dominant Anglo-American/Western feminist historical narrative. Chapter Two will focus on the arrival in Italy of Lispector’s texts, Luisa Muraro and the Diotima women’s feminist philosophy group’s readings. Chapter Three then covers Adriana Cavarero, as well as her split from said Diotima group. Finally, Chapter Four brings us to Rosi Braidotti, from her early texts on Lispector to present theoretical horizons.

    A brief comparative history of economic regionalism in the North Italian macro-region and Catalonia GEORGE HENRY NEWTH Anno I, n. I, giugno 2014 ISSN.2284-086 1. Introduction. Over the past three decades a major new fault line has emerged in European politics, reflecting the fragility of the nation-state. This has manifested itself in calls for various demands of autonomy – and in some cases outright secession – from autonomist and regionalist parties in direct conflict with a Europe of the “Nation-States”, which in their view has been denying them their right to self- determination. Amongst this “Europe of the Regions” lie the Convergencia I Unio (CiU) of Catalonia and the Northern League (Lega Nord) of (North) Italy1. Looking at these two movements a strange paradox emerges. On the one hand, contemporary studies of the Lega Nord have tended to ignore, overlook, or view as simply rhetorical the role of historical regional tensions in the emergence of regionalist fervour. On the other hand, regionalist sentiment in Catalonia has, instead, been strongly linked to past socio-economic events in their peninsulas2. What this article seeks to add to the existing literature is an interpretation of the Lega Nord as the re-emergence of historical tensions which manifested themselves during two economic booms in Lombardy and Piedmont respectively. The fact that these economic booms happened in the same periods in Catalonia (late 19th Century and mid-20th Century) proves particularly illuminating as we see an “economic regionalism” emerge in both regions involving an exacerbation of pre-existing hostilities towards the central state and the South in each peninsula.

    Modern Italy, 2020 Vol. 25, No. 3, 261–277, doi:10.1017/mit.2020.25 Geography of human capital in Italy: a comparison between macro-regions Alberto Baldissera and Federica Cornali* Department of Cultures, Politics and Society, University of Turin, Turin, Italy (Received 20 September 2018; final version accepted 7 April 2020) Interest in the spread of human capital has grown in recent decades, as it is acknowledged to play an increasingly important role in supporting social and economic development. This paper, starting from the distinction between education – assessed by educational attainment – and literacy proficiency – that is, what people are actually able to do with the written word – examines the distribution of these properties in Italy. Results of ana- lysis show that while the longstanding gap between the North and the South is gradually closing with regard to the distribution of educational credentials, there is still a significant difference in the acquired level of competence. There is also an unexpected result: the regions of the North-West, once the main driver of Italy’s economic development, today deploy a smaller stock of human capital than the North-East and Central macro- regions. In light of these findings, improving the education system’s effectiveness and creating adequate political, institutional and legal arrangements that favour the develop- ment of human capital appear to be an absolute priority for Italy. Empirical evidence from Italy https://doi.org/10.1515/openps-2020-0008 received March 17, 2020; accepted April 3, 2020. Abstract: Immigration has unquestionably gained importance in Italian public opinion over the past few years; but what has been its effect on politics? Building on a recent trend in literature, this paper appraises the effect of immigration on the success of far-right parties. We analyze the results of the elections from 2001, when immigration was still marginal, to the last elections held in 2018. Applying time-series-cross-section methods to an original dataset, we find that immigration has had a consistent effect on votes for the far-right. Interestingly, we also show that economic factors likely weigh more on far-right votes than immigration.
