METHODIST CHURCH Minister Revd. Andrew Biggs I’m writing this article during Holy Week. Easter is such a special time and our lovely part of the world really springs (no pun intended) to life during this period, doesn’t it? Sadly, I was unable to attend the service on the Knoll on Palm Sunday but I’ve heard from many of you who enjoyed it that the bracing walk to the top was well worth the effort! Our next Emmaus course will be starting on Thursday 1st May at 2.30pm. Sadly this will be the last which our own Rev Andrew will be taking before he and Julie leave us in August. It goes without saying that all are welcome. And a reminder that our Spring “Bring and buy” coffee morning will be held on Saturday 3rd May from 10.30am onwards. This precedes our church anniversary on Sunday 4th May, where we will be enjoying a shared lunch after the service. Again, a warm welcome is assured to all as we enjoy our fellowship within the village. God bless. Rosemary Krull Preachers for May at 10.30am 4th May : Rev Andrew Biggs (Holy Communion and Church Anniversary) 11th May : Local Arrangement 18th May : Rev Stephen Marr 25th May : Janice Barret Toddlers It is lovely welcoming everyone back for the Summer Term. The Easter Egg trail around the village was great fun and it was super to see the Toddlers’ egg display covered in your beautiful paintings. Well done everyone - your art work was much admired. We have been given some fabulous toys, building bricks and an amazing car track, so a big ‘thank you’ to Jackie, Fred and Ali. Your kind generosity will be appreciated and enjoyed by lots of children. Just a reminder: No Toddlers on Tuesday 27th May (half-term). Back on Tuesday 3rd June. The booklets are a pictorial impression of Brent Knoll Village life, illustrated by local artist Judith Champion. Owen J Cullwick, [email protected] Sowing the Seeds of Respect As World War One raged on the battlefields of Europe, bright red poppies appeared where the fighting had disturbed the dormant poppy seeds in the ground. Since then, the poppy has become the internationally recognised symbol of Remembrance. To commemorate the Centenary of the start of WWI on 4th August, the Royal British Legion has suggested that we can all do our bit by planting poppy seeds in our gardens, window-boxes and pots by the end of May, so that they will flower by early August, producing a sea of poppies in our communities. The seeds must not be planted near agricultural land or sites of scientific interest. If you purchase the seeds from B&Q, then £1 from each packet will be donated to the Royal British Legion (Charity no. 219279). Mary Piper, Brent Knoll Royal British Legion Women’s Section 8

Just a thought! The RESURRECTION of Jesus Christ, is the defeat of death. No more does humanity – past, present or future – need fear death, for ‘death has lost its sting’. That is the faith we Christians know (or should know!) and it frees us: frees us to live our lives courageously. Listen to and reflect on the words of Oscar Romero, once priest and bishop in El Salvador, and murdered because for his faith, and his trust in the resurrection. The gospel is courageous by Oscar Romero A church that doesn’t provoke any crisis, a gospel that doesn’t unsettle, a word of God that doesn’t get under anyone’s skin, a word of God that doesn’t touch the real sin of the society in which it is being proclaimed, what gospel is that? Very nice, pious considerations that don’t bother anyone, that’s the way many would like preaching to be. Those preachers who avoid every thorny matter so as not to be harassed, so as not to have conflicts and difficulties, do not light up the world they live in. They don’t have Peter’s courage, who told the crowd that had killed Christ: ‘You killed him!’ (Bible: Acts 2.23) Even though the charge could cost him his life as well, he made it. The gospel is courageous; it’s the good news of him who came to take away the world’s sins. For Oscar Romero, death had lost its sting, and he challenged people to accept God, as The Creator, and live a Godly life – live a courageous gospel. ‘Alleluia, Christ is risen. He is risen indeed’, is the shout from every Church community this Easter. Happy Easter Simon Lewis, Priest-in-Charge WHERE IN OUR VILLAGE Each month the BKN will have a small picture quiz – no prizes, but I hope you may enjoy guessing where the object shown is located within the Parish boundary. Last month’s object is the top of the door to the tower in St Michael’s, located on the north side of the church. This month’s object is one of the lovely gates we have in the village. So where is it? The answer and another object will be shown next month. Judy’s Barn Owl Box I’m pleased to report the barn Owl Box we purchased to remember Judy Barwell, finally got put up in late February. We waited and waited for suitable weather and after cancelling the event twice due to high winds we put the box up in the pouring rain. There is a plaque on its left side that reads “in memory of Judy Barwell and her faithful companion Barny.” After a visit from Chris Sperring, Conservation Officer with the Owl and Hawk Trust, Richard, Judy’s son and Peter Osborn tramped around looking for a suitable tree. On the day, I hired Keith and Linda Hall to put up the box. They are a husband and wife team who are dedicated to making and siting nesting boxes and running workshops for young people to encourage them to help our wildlife. See their website at www.specialisednestboxes.com. My thanks to everyone who helped make this happen, let’s now hope that a Barn Owl couple will find it an attractive box to raise some chicks in. Brent Knoll Parish Council Chairman’s Report 2013-2014. The past year has once again been a busy year for council members. We have to express our continued thanks for the excellent service and support provided by our clerk, Owen Cullwick. I detail below a review of our work: 1. Flooding December 2012: The council has consulted with Axe Brue Drainage Board and Wessex Water regarding implications of the flooding experienced in Brent Knoll. A flood action plan has been written, approved by the council, and is available for inspection. Your council have taken advantage of finance offered by for local flood prevention projects. The council has used this money to purchase pumping equipment that can be deployed in any area of the village should flooding occur in the future. Rhyne clearance has also taken place. A flood action group has been formed to be called upon in the case of an emergency. Special thanks must go to Cllr John Harper and Cllr David Knott who led this initiative. 2. Wessex Water: This is of major concern to residents and I quote from a recent communication from Wessex Water received in March 2014: “Design is progressing and recent activities include site walkover with the construction team and design team, obtaining landowner information and outline design. Planned dates are currently : a. Ground Investigation and bore holes in April. b. Detailed design. May to July. c. Construction start. October. The main part of the scheme comprises a pumping station upgrade and rising main replacement at Forge House.” 3. Footpaths, Highways and Village Green: The Council monitors the condition of roads and footpaths on a regular basis. Stafford gates have been fitted in lieu of stiles that have deteriorated and repairs carried out to others. Our relationship with Highways ensures that requests are promptly attended to. The National Trust has been engaged to help with new steps towards the top of the Knoll Footpath. In order to become more efficient, your Council has, where necessary, taken control of grass cutting and maintenance using a local contractor under contract. The toilet block has now been totally refurbished. 4. Social Housing: The Council, with the help of District Council, carried out a survey to determine whether there is a need for social housing within Brent Knoll. A need has been identified and suitable sites have been offered for potential development. This project will continue during the forthcoming year. 5. Speeding in the Village: This has been a concern for some time and we must express our thanks to Cllr Richard Ibrahim who has persevered with this project. It is anticipated that a speed indicator device will be purchased and will be sited at strategic places within the village in the very near future. The Council has also made an application for a 20 mph speed restriction in the area of the village school. 6. Projects under consideration this time: a. The supply and installation of a Defibrillator. b. Cycle path Crooked Lane: Burnham on Sea. c. Refurbishment of lower Knoll steps. d. New Village signs. e. Though not a Council project; the expansion of Super-Fast Broadband to the Village. Colin Townsend. Chairman 2013-2014 16

At our March meeting, we had a great afternoon when Sue Bell came along and brought a selection of beautiful hats and jewellery. Many of us had good fun trying on the lovely creations and imagined ourselves at Ascot or a Royal Garden Party. At our May meeting, we will have a complete change when Tim Lewis entertains us with Glorious Mud. We will leave it to your imagination as to what this will be about. Next meeting – 21st May – Tim Lewis – Glorious Mud We are a very friendly group and we welcome new members of all ages. We meet on the third Wednesday of every month, so just come along to a meeting or contact Joy Collett - 01278 760 458. Trish Mace WI CRAFT GROUP Our next meeting will be on Monday May 19th at 2.30pm in the Methodist Church School room. We are a small group who meet to knit, chat and have a cuppa. As well as knitting for our usual charities, Romania and Mission to Seafarers, we also now knit for Somewhere to Go, a Weston based charity helping the homeless and vulnerable. We are grateful to those who are unable to attend our meetings but still donate wool or knitted items to us. For any further information please contact me on 760 691. Brent Knoll House Histories Andrews’s Tenement – 2 Last month I discussed the will of John Gould, which was dated the 4th day of May, 1811 and referred to the land which he bequeathed to his son Thomas Gould. That land had come into his possession in 1803, when, on the 24th of March, George Balch Esquire, of Saint Audries, agreed a lease of one year with Webb Jefferies of Bridgewater (spelt that way in the document), who is described as a Gentleman. George Balch’s death is reported in the New Monthly Magazine Volume 1, No. 1 of 1814, where he is described as “the last male descendant of an ancient family.” In fact, his father, Robert Balch of bought St Audries for £13,662 in 1763 and when he died it passed to George’s elder brother, Robert Everard Balch, who had properties in a number of places at various times, including the manor of Stockton in Wiltshire and that of Over Stowey. When his brother died, in 1799, George was the main beneficiary. The death of George is mentioned in a well-known book, “Paupers and Pig Killers,” the diary of the Reverend William Holland of Over Stowey, who comments, “Friday January 14th, 1814, snow threatened and it was freezing beyond measure! Mr Balch was carried from St. Audries to Bridgwater to be buried…buried he has been all his life. Narrow in intellect, bad in health, rarely left the house he shared with his surviving sister. A poor creature who did no more than live and die.” Oh dear! The Lease was a normal feature of the time leading to the true transaction, which was a Release dated the following day. In that, it transpires that Webb Jefferies is acting in trust for John Gould. In both these documents, the land referred to is described as: all that dwelling house, garden and tenement commonly called or known by the name of Andrews’s (or Andrews’s Tenements in the other document) together with two orchards which comprise about one acre, a close called The Crift (probably a local name for a close, which is enclosed land used for tillage or pasture and normally adjacent to a house, though it may also have an implication of being a close in a valley, as in this case), which was about three acres, another close (also called The Crift) of about one acre and a Coppice “adjoining and thereto belonging”. Altogether they came to about 5 acres 3 roods and 37 perches (there are 40 1811 Map perches to a rood and 4 roods to an acre, 0.4(047) hectares to an acre and 25.3 square metres to a perch). In the Tithe Map the total for these properties comes in at 5 acres 3 roods and 25 perches, although the individual plots are a little more difficult to reconcile. Continued on page 20 20

Brent Knoll House Histories – Continued Exactly who was being referred to as “Andrews’s” I have not yet discovered, but the use of the apostrophe and the repeat of an “s” is interesting, telling us that this was a surname, not a first name. Presumably it refers to the person who had the ‘tenement’ built in the first instance, probably in the eighteenth century. If I find out anything more I will include that later. There is a clause at the end of the Release, though, which suggests that George Balch only acquired the property in 1800 from someone called Thomas Allen. No details are given, but the deeds have to be made available to John Gould in certain circumstances. Other people interested in that transaction included: Elizabeth Chambre, George Ward Errington and his wife, Frances Amy, and Christiana Balch as third parties, and a Richard Symes as fourth party, suggesting there may be a trust somewhere. The above mentioned properties, which were not further described in these documents, are later defined more precisely, by giving their numbering on the Tithe Map. Here, the 1811 map has an almost identical field system to the 1842 Tithe Map. In fact, the only difference seems to be that the eastern part of No. 66 is divided away from the rest because a new house and garden has been established there (now known as The Cottage, though the present house is a rebuild after WWII and in a slightly altered position). Notice that the house at No. 65 was not part of this estate even then (I mention this here because it happens to be my house!). At this time two other properties were also included with this group. One of these was in a field system known in this document as Kilnworthy (presumably because it was an enclosure (worth) containing a kiln at some time), although the Tithe Map refers to it as Kilnwithy, which could refer to the local withies or to willows. It is located almost exactly half way between Ham and the section of Crooked Lane which runs directly from the railway bridge as it heads in the direction of Burnham. The other is The Fair Ground, being pasture land at the time and situate immediately behind the church and across the foot path. It now forms part of the land of The Manor, but is only separated from field No. 62 by a couple of fields. The footpath leading from the sharp bend in Church Lane at the corner of the churchyard, up to the junction with another path coming from The Manor, was the original road leading to the Fair Ground. It is probably fairly ancient and was unlikely to have been metalled, though it may have been pebbled. Although the actual deed is no longer available, a Settlement of 1811 does mention the fact that John Gould had defaulted on a mortgage to James Poole, which was originally for £1000 on lands including the above, but also unspecified additional lands which were sold to repay £700 of the debt. However, John Gould wished to make some provision for his son Thomas and requested that the lands, which are now included here, should be retained and a new mortgage for £300 be set against the surety of the remaining property. This was agreed. James Poole is mentioned in an 1811 document as a stationer from Bridgwater. John Page 21

Our May meeting is to be held on Thursday 27th at Brenda’s home – 154, Brent Street when Brenda will be telling us of her experiences of working in Romania. If you feel you would like to join us at any of our meetings you would be very welcome. Ann Women’s Institute Simon Anderson, the speaker at our April meeting, gave us a very entertaining talk about the charity he is involved with - Support Dogs. This is a national charity dedicated to training assistance dogs to transform the lives of people with epilepsy, physical disabilities and children with autism. Simon’s three pointer dogs demonstrated some of the things they can do. The Flower of the Month competition was jointly won by Sylvia Ainsworth, Eileen Goundry and Ann Robson. The meeting on May 14th at the Parish Hall at 2.30pm will be the all-important AGM and discussion and voting on the Resolution. There will be the usual Bring and Buy table. Cheddar Male Choir Concert in Brent Knoll Parish Hall Saturday 10th May 7.30pm Have you got your tickets for the CMC – “Blood Bikers Charity Concert” yet? It’s going to be a fantastic event with the well-known Cheddar Male Choir singing some of your favourite songs along with Francesca Bowkett and the honours award winning soprano, Kate Eastment. Tickets are just £5. These are now on sale in Caroline’s Village Shop, (Brent Knoll Post Office), Holywell Nursing Home and Graham Knott 760 354 or any CMC member. Tickets are limited due to the size of the hall so get yours early so as not to be disappointed. Also did I mention there’s a BAR, SNACKS and RAFFLE as well. For further details contact Sarah Joyce at Holywell 760 601 or 787 493 Sarah VILLAGE SHOP AND POST OFFICE Whilst walking aimlessly round the village shop this morning vainly trying to remember what I had driven there for, I was very forcibly struck by how lucky we are in Brent Knoll to have such a well and diverse range of goods on offer. The local supplier also came in whilst I was there bringing still more items for sale. Incidentally, I still could not think what it was I wanted. There are all the basic necessities on show, plus fresh produce, fresh eggs, meat, newly baked bread and speciality breads, various cheeses and homemade pies. The selection is really amazing; there are even small gifts, plants and a very good selection of cards. The Post office is also there for our convenience and we are so lucky still to have it with so many others closing. As well as using it for postage etc., one can do your banking, draw pensions, pay bills and instead of going to the cash machine {incomprehensible to me} draw your money and have time to put it away with no rush, or somebody looking over your shoulder, in perfect safety. Even if you do have to wait a few minutes, there is always somebody you can talk to and find out what is happening in the village. There are approximately 500 households in Brent Knoll, so if instead of driving to the supermarket for just a few items {you always get more than you intended}, save your petrol and temper at the supermarket tills, pop into Caroline’s shop and get it there. If every household spent as little as £5 per week if would help to safeguard a much needed amenity in our village. It is so nice to go into an establishment where you are welcomed by name by Caroline, or her helpers and Manchu. Don’t just rush past in your car, stop and go and browse, there is so much to offer. PLEASE USE IT OR LOSE IT. MARGARET BRYANT Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society Are holding a concert at St John's Church Highbridge on the 10th May singing the 2nd part of the Messiah and excerpts from Handel’s Coronation Anthems, together with songs from West Side Story. Start time is 7.30pm admission £7.50 tickets can be purchased on the door, from a member of the choral society, or at Grandma's Attic Victoria Street Burnham on Sea (situated opposite St Andrews Church BOS). Bob Filmer, 200+ Club Co-ordinator BRENT KNOLL FÊTE This year the Village Fête will be held on Saturday the 14th of June – please put this date in your diary; we would love to see you there. It is now getting fairly close to this year’s major social event in the village – the Village Fête. We have been hearing from lots of the stall-holders from last year and may even have one or two newcomers. There should be plenty of activities for all ages, with some active events for the children. If you would like a stall and have not arranged a site yet, please do get in contact. My telephone number is below. Please also state whether you would like to be inside or outside. This year we are very pleased to have a native born Brent Knollian to open our Fête. Major John Harper’s family have been resident here since the middle of the nineteenth century and he will be amongst the very few who can claim that they are the second generation of their family to do so. Read more about him in the Fête Programme. The Committee has decided that this year’s theme will be Country and Western. In case this may cause some confusion, it does refer to the Wild West, though my understanding is that Country and Western music fans like dressing up in cowboy style anyway. Of course, the Wild West could also mean you could come as a Native American. Hopefully this will be a theme that many will find they will enjoy taking part in, so, gun-slingers, mosey on down to the Village Green, but do leave your horses back in the stable. Lympsham Gardening Club At our April meeting, Carole Hamelin told us about their Lavender Farm at , where they bought a field on the sunny slopes of the Mendips and hand planted it with Lavender. Lavender first came to Britain with the Romans about 46 BC and they used it as a herb and to discourage mosquitoes. As they made their way northwards through the country, they planted the lavender they had brought with them. When they finally left around 400 AD, so did the lavender as it was not a suitable variety to thrive untended in the British climate. It prefered a hot dry soil with no frosts. In the 1600’s, a variety of Lavender (Augustifolia officinalis) from the mountainous regions of France was introduced here and thrived and is now known as “English Lavender” (Lavendula augustifolia). This has a much sweeter perfume than the Mediterranean lavender that the Romans brought but produces less oil. The Elizabethans used lavender to mask body smells and the Victorians made lavender bags to hang in wardrobes to keep moths away. A few drops of pure oil on your pillow can help relieve stress, tension and tiredness and it’s antiseptic qualities make it good to use to treat stings and bites. Axbridge Lavender Farm uses the oil in body lotion, hand cream and bath oil. They also use the oil in making lavender and orange marmalade, and lavender and strawberry jam as well as flavouring sugar and fudge. Their shop will be opening in The Square in Axbridge in May this year! Dates of future Meetings:- Tuesday 13th May 7.45pm Spring Containers is the subject that Cindy Tratt will talk about. Since then, I created an even easier Sudoku. The very easiest Sudoku is one with 80 clues and only one cell to fill in! But the competition I entered had rules. No more than 32 clues! The Website has a Solver which grades Sudokus. Last month’s graded 4, solves in 4 steps (17,20,12,1). This month’s grades 3 and solves in 3 steps (20,21,8). See www.sudokuwiki.org/sudoku.htm. Can 3½ minutes be beaten - no cheating! 18 persons solved last month’s Sudoku. They were Klaus Brenner, Pauline Chadwick, Tim Cromwell, Mac Hares, Arndt Hartmann, Liz Ibrahim, Vicky Jones, Stephen Lawrence, Frankie New, Chris Marsh, Peter Osborn, Jean Owen, Margaret Rogers, Christine Sandy Julie Slawson, John Spiers, Caroline Sturgess and Ted Toon. One said it took 3 attempts! Stephen Lawrence won the ballot. Send your solution to 48, Brent Street or [email protected]. If there are several winners, there will be another ballot. Brent Knoll Local History Society (BKLHS) In March we started with an anecdote from Brian Freestone regarding the tithes in an area close to where he was born. Some of the pictures could almost have been taken in Brent Knoll! This was followed by some discussion of “Edmund Rack’s Survey of Somerset,” a book recently published by Mark McDermott and Sue Berry. Rack travelled the county at the end of the 18th century making copious notes about the towns and villages he came across. This was for a collaboration with the Revd John Collinson, who did use some of the information gleaned, after Rack’s untimely death, but added a lot of his own and omitted quite a lot that is of particular interest today. This discussion will continue in our April meeting, to be held on Monday 28th April in the Jubilee Room of the Parish Hall, starting at 7.30pm, looking at where the two works differ and seeing what new information we can discover in Rack. That will be followed by a look at an ancient manor in South Brent. New members will be very welcome. To cover costs (mainly the hire of the Jubilee Room) a small charge, usually £1 (sometimes £2), is payable. If you cannot make either of these meetings, please note the 4th Monday of the month in your diary for the Autumn months, as this is our regular meeting date. During the Summer months we try to get out for visits to places of historic interest. If you have any ideas about venues please do let us know. Currently we have booked in to have a High Parts Tour visit to Wells Cathedral at 2pm on the 29th May. Spaces are limited to 12 and most have already gone, but if enough people are interested it may be possible to arrange a second group on the same day. There is a charge of £6 for the tour, but we hope to arrange shared transport amongst ourselves. One proviso; you have to be reasonably fit to get up the circular stairs and around the roof – but it is well worth the effort. Another venue, which has been proposed, is a visit to the Somerset Museum at . Often going with a crowd of like-minded people can add to the enjoyment of such visits and sometimes we can get into places that would not otherwise be available. As we need to make arrangements before the date we welcome suggestions now. Hope to see you there. John Page The Chris Evans Bike Ride & BBQ On Sunday 29th June 2014 at 11.00am a bike ride will start from The Red Cow, Brent Knoll. The ride is to raise funds for The British Lung Foundation, with a donation also being made to the improvement of Crooked Lane. The 26 mile route will take cyclists through the peaceful and beautiful countryside of the Somerset Levels to Godney, returning for a BBQ in the gardens of The Red Cow. The charity ride is in its third year and is in memory of Chris Evans. Chris suffered from a lung condition for three years and funds raised will help toward research at The British Lung Foundation. Over the last two years, over £3000 has been raised and it is hoped to build upon this sum. The British Lung Foundation is the only UK charity fighting to help the 1 in 5 people in the UK affected by lung disease. The charity provides support and information to improve the everyday lives of people with lung disease. It is also campaigning for better diagnosis, treatment and prevention for now and the future – for more information go to www.blf.org.uk . All those who can cycle are welcome to attend at The Red Cow car park at 11.00am or to attend the BBQ at 4.00pm. Tickets are £10 per adult and £6 per child and can be purchased from The Red Cow or the Brent Knoll Post Office until 23rd June. It will be a fun day out! Jenny 37

Brent Knoll Weather Report – March 2014 March was as normal as the Winter was exceptional. The temperature and rainfall for the first month of Spring were right on the average for the time of year, and there were no gales and just a couple of slight frosts. All this must come as a relief to those who are tackling the problems caused the wind and rain of the previous three months. The month began with an air frost, the first since 12th January. February, you will remember, was quite remarkable for being frost-free: but shortly before dawn on 1st March the thermometer just dipped below freezing, to -0.2°C. The rest of the day was bright with some early sunshine, but it was all change the next day when a low pressure system brought us the wettest day of the month with 12mm (0.5in) of rain. Atlantic lows remained in charge for the first week of March, but high pressure over Europe deflected the worst of the weather northwards and we saw little more than a fairly benign mix of sunshine and showers. The second week of March saw the arrival of a high pressure system with the barometer exceeding 1020hPa for the first time since mid–December. For much of the country, this brought welcome blue skies, but mid-March saw several very still days when the fog never cleared from low-lying areas. Satellite imagery showed the Somerset levels, including Brent Knoll, filled with a damp mist, while Mendip and Exmoor basked in sunshine – very frustrating. Maybe the top of the Knoll was above the mist as well, but I couldn’t see it on the satellite photographs. The high pressure slipped away south around the 20th March allowing the Atlantic lows to make themselves felt, but once again they passed well to our north and even though it rained every day for a week, rainfall totals were modest. The final week of March produced some interesting contrasts, as we were sandwiched between a high pressure system over Scandinavia and lows trying to get in from the Atlantic. At first this produced a cold north-easterly airstream, cold enough to produce snow on Dartmoor and even a light fall on Mendip: but then the high moved a little further north and drew in air from southern Europe. This was much warmer, and suddenly temperatures were soaring – we didn’t quite make it to 20°C as some parts of the country did, but our high of 19.3°C (67°F) on the 30th was a welcome reminder that better weather is on the way. The average temperature for March was 7.7°C (46°F) and the rainfall total was 45.4mm (1.9in) – both normal figures for March – and the maximum wind gust was a modest 31.3kts, so no March gales this year. More Ramblings of a Rambler Things, weather-wise, have improved somewhat of late, even at times when you could discard your wet weather gear. It was on such a day we took our grandchildren to the Quantocks but insisted on them wearing gum boots, as there were puddles and streams and it was still March. After a few adventurous stops, we arrived at Greatwood, a magical site for children. The blanket was spread on the ground and the sandwiches unwrapped, all went well until the children complained of being bothered by bees. This continued until we realised the bees were trying to extract nectar from the pretty flowers printed on the children’s gum boots. Because the rambleress is a grandmother, mother’s day comes a day early so that the mothers she is a mother to, can enjoy mother’s day in their own right. So having mother’s day free, the rambleress and I went on a ramble; we choose the Mendip Way above Canada Coombe. On our walk we enjoyed birdsong and carpets of wild flowers but we did not see another person. All the dads must have given their wives the day off cooking the Sunday roast and taken them, with the children, to the pub to eat and because it was mother’s day, the mothers were allowed to drive! We have had several visits from a pair of mallard; it seems as though they are looking for a nesting site but as yet have not decided on one. The rabbits are breeding well, which is good news for the buzzards and foxes. I think the gulls that live on the roof of Orchard Hill are nesting; if that is so, get ready for dive bombing gulls. As I write this, a cock pheasant has been heard daily but not seen: it’s nice to know that at least one has escaped the gun. Finally, I can now tell you the Summer has arrived. On the tenth of April our swallows came home and are busy fattening themselves up after their migration. The Rambler
