    HISTORY Before the creation of the States in 1967, the identity of Lagos was restricted to the Lagos Island of Eko (Bini word for war camp). The first settlers in Eko were the Aworis, who were mostly hunters and fishermen. They had migrated from Ile-Ife by stages to the coast at Ebute- Metta. The Aworis were later reinforced by a band of Benin warriors and joined by other Yoruba elements who settled on the mainland for a while till the danger of an attack by the warring tribes plaguing Yorubaland drove them to seek the security of the nearest island, Iddo, from where they spread to Eko. By 1851 after the abolition of the slave trade, there was a great attraction to Lagos by the repatriates. First were the Saro, mainly freed Yoruba captives and their descendants who, having been set ashore in Sierra Leone, responded to the pull of their homeland, and returned in successive waves to Lagos. Having had the privilege of Western education and christianity, they made remarkable contributions to education and the rapid modernisation of Lagos. They were granted land to settle in the Olowogbowo and Breadfruit areas of the island. The Brazilian returnees, the Aguda, also started arriving in Lagos in the mid-19th century and brought with them the skills they had acquired in Brazil. Most of them were master-builders, carpenters and masons, and gave the distinct charaterisitics of Brazilian architecture to their residential buildings at Bamgbose and Campos Square areas which form a large proportion of architectural richness of the city.

    BROADCAST DELIVERED BY THE GOVERNOR OF OGUN STATE, HIS EXCELLENCY, PRINCE DAPO ABIODUN MFR, AT THE 45TH ANNIVERSARY OF OGUN STATE, HELD ON WEDNESDAY, 3RD FEBRUARY, 2021 My dear people of Ogun State, On this day, 45 years ago, exactly 3rd of February, 1976, the then Military Head of State, Late General Muritala Ramat Muhammed, made a nationwide broadcast. It was a broadcast like no other, especially, for us in Ogun State. The import of that broadcast is that it acceded to our agitation for a unique identity. With the merger of two existing provinces comprising Remo, Ijebu, Yewa and Egba divisions, Ogun State was born. On behalf of your Government, I say a happy 45th birthday to our dear State and all of us, citizens and residents of Nigeria’s Gateway State. 2. Let me appreciate the contributions of our founding fathers and mothers whose efforts culminated in the creation of our dear State. Not all of them can be mentioned here. But I specially acknowledge that of the Chairman of the Panel that recommended the State for the 2 consideration of the Supreme Military Council, the late Justice Ayo Irikefe and his co-panelists. I also appreciate all others who in thoughts and deeds contributed to the making and sustenance of Ogun State in its present FORM. 3. I salute the patriotic zeal of all those Public Servants who transferred their services from the Old Western State to the then nascent Ogun State. However, little attention has been given to the peculiar features and dynamics of spaces within Lagos whose constitutive nature and activities have had enormous implications for organization of social existence, politics, trade and inter-ethnic relations in Nigeria, and for (in)formal economies in Africa. One enduring economic space which has emblemized the enterprise of low-end globalization in the informal economy arena in Nigeria is the Ladipo auto spare parts market in Lagos. Ladipo has transformed from an inconspicuous ritual space to a twenty-first-century mega flea market. This article tracks the developmental trajectory of Ladipo and its streets’ spare parts trade in metropolitan Lagos. It interrogates the transformation of a religious space into a market, the spread and organization of trade, the regulatory institutions and associations that have evolved and how Ladipo has become a vote bank and platform for sub-regional economic interaction. It examines the interface between trade, politics and religion. It analyzes the changes and adaptation in the ethnic composition of Mushin, factors responsible and the impact of these dynamics. It concludes that without structural adjustment there may not have been the Ladipo flea market.
