COMMUNITY Rahway is a diverse community of approximately 27,000 residents located 22 miles southwest of New York City.

SCHOOL Rahway High School is comprised of two schools, the main High School and the Alternative Center for Education, serving approximately 1,101 students for the 2017- 2018 school year. Of the students enrolled at RHS in 2017-2018, 41% identified as Black, 39% as Hispanic, 13% as White, 3% as Asian, and 3% as multi-racial. 59% of families reported income that met the requirements for receiving free or reduced price lunch.

ACCREDITATION Rahway High School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the New Jersey Department of Education.

FACULTY The professional staff includes 159 teachers, counselors, librarians/media specialists and support staff. Six full-time counselors assist individuals and groups in academic, career and personal matters. Beginning in ninth grade, students are enrolled in an award- winning Freshman Seminar program which focuses students on achieving academic and career goals. The counseling staff is supported by a director of guidance and the child study team.

STUDENTS Rahway students actively participate in school life on a broad academic and co-curricular level:  More than 40 co-curricular activities are offered in addition to 15 sports programs.  Students produce a newspaper, yearbook and literary magazine.  Distinguished students may be accepted to three specialized academies within the high school (STEM, Fine and Performing Arts, and Tomorrow’s Teachers). Students in the academies follow a strict course schedule and engage in scholarship as it relates to their chosen field. Course advising, program application, and enrichment opportunities are provided.  Major theatrical productions have received numerous awards in statewide competitions.  High quality vocal and instrumental programs allow students to participate in state choirs and orchestras.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE Quality points are used to compute both the unweighted and weighted GPA. Unweighted GPA is calculated using all courses taken at Rahway High School. Weighted GPA includes only academic subjects that have tiered weights. Weighted GPA and rank are determined at the end of 11th grade and at the end of the first semester of 12th grade. Honors and subjects receive additional weight.

Both grade point averages will appear on a student’s transcript. Class rank is based on a student’s weighted GPA.

CURRICULUM Rahway High School offers a comprehensive program of studies with a strong focus on college preparatory courses. More than 100 courses are offered in academic subjects, business, fine arts, music and practical arts during the 10 period day. There are also 187 Advanced Placement courses as well as Honors courses offered in most subjects. Students are also able to attend the Union County Vocational-Technical School in a shared time program.

RAHWAY HIGH Students must accumulate a minimum of 120 credits to earn a diploma. PARTICIPATION NJ SEEDS: The Class of 2018 is the first class in Rahway to participate in this program IN SPECIALIZED that changes the lives of motivated, high-achieving students from low-income families by PROGRAMS transforming their educational opportunities. Five students from the Class of 2017 were selected in the fall of 2016 and have been attending SEEDS on Saturday and during the summer.

NJ LEEP: The Class of 2018 has its first student selected to participate in NJ LEEP which is a college access and success program serving students and families in the greater Newark area. This College Bound Program empowers high school students with both the academic and social-emotional skills necessary to succeed in college and beyond and uses law to teach transferable skills.

NJ SCHOLARS PROGRAM: In this highly selective program, one member of the Class of 2018 was chosen as a New Jersey Scholar and attended a program for five weeks during the summer where other able and enthusiastic students spend the summer in an intense, interdisciplinary intellectual experience which teaches them to think in a new way.
