(Also Visakhapatnam, Shortened and Anglicised: Visakha/Vizag Or Vasaka) Is a Major Port and Th GENERAL INFO & HISTORY: Vizag (also Visakhapatnam, shortened and anglicised: Visakha/Vizag or Vasaka) is a major port and the second largest city in the state of Andhra Pradesh and the third largest city on the east coast of India after Kolkata and Chennai, with a population of approximately 1.3 million. It is located 625 kilometres (388 mi) east of state capital, Hyderabad. The city is nestled among the hills of the Eastern Ghats and faces the Bay of Bengal to the east. It is the administrative headquarters of Visakhapatnam district and is also home to the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. Visakhapatnam is often referred to as The Jewel of The East Coastor The City of Destiny. Vizag is sometimes referred to as the "Goa of the East Coast." Just like its west coast counterpart, it has beautiful virgin beaches, laterite hillocks, smooth roads and stunning landscape. Health-tourism is a fast developing industry. Visakhapatnam is variously referred to as Jewel on the Coramandel Coast or Steel city. Road NH 5 (3kms) National Highway No.5 (Howrah to Chennai) passes through Visakhapatnam. APSRTC as well private operators runs buses to Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Chennai, Koraput, Damanjudi, Khammam, Tirupathi & Banglore. Rail Station (1.5kms) Visakhapatnam is the center point for trains plying between Chennai - Howrah - secunderabad. It is well connected to Hyderabad being the state captial and other leading towns in the state, as well as to Bhubaneswar. Raja Sekhar Department of Environmental Sciences, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, A.P., India _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT A comparative study on present status of marine macro algal flora in relation to their occurrence, distribution and diversity was carried out at along the Visakhapatnam coast intertidal shores areas of Bay of Bengal, East coast of India over a period of five decades with reference to climate change. A total of 48 seaweeds species were recorded, of which 18 species (37%) belong to Chlorophyta, 9 species (19%) belong to Phaeophyta and 21 species (44%) belong to Rhodophyta. A total of 10 macroalgae species were newly recorded, while, 41 species were found to be absent during the present study when compared to 1964 data obtained from this coast. In the present study, the impacts of Hudhud, severe tropical cyclone on intertidal macro algae was observed. Cyclone development in East coast of India was observed in the months of September – November, when prominent growth of macroalgae was recorded. Climate change not only increases the impact of environmental stressors but also intensify their frequency of occurrence.
