Ina Boyle inhabits a unique space in twentieth-century music in Ireland as the first resident Irishwoman to write a symphony. If her name conjures any recollection at all to scholars of British music, it is most likely in connection to Vaughan Williams, whom she studied with privately, or in relation to some of her friends and close acquaintances such as Elizabeth Maconchy, Grace Williams, and Anne Macnaghten. While the appearance of a biography may seem somewhat surprising at first glance, for those more aware of the growing interest in Boyle’s music in recent years, it was only a matter of time for her life and music to receive a more detailed and thorough examination.

  • A Study of Tyzen Hsiao's Piano Concerto, Op. 53
A Study of Tyzen Hsiao’s Piano Concerto, Op. 53: A Comparison with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 D.M.A Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Lin-Min Chang, M.M. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2018 D.M.A. Document Committee: Professor Steven Glaser, Advisor Dr. Anna Gowboy Dr. Kia-Hui Tan Copyright by Lin-Min Chang 2018 2 ABSTRACT One of the most prominent Taiwanese composers, Tyzen Hsiao, is known as the “Sergei Rachmaninoff of Taiwan.” The primary purpose of this document is to compare and discuss his Piano Concerto Op. 53, from a performer’s perspective, with the Second Piano Concerto of Sergei Rachmaninoff. Hsiao’s preferences of musical materials such as harmony, texture, and rhythmic patterns are influenced by Romantic, Impressionist, and 20th century musicians incorporating these elements together with Taiwanese folk song into a unique musical style. This document consists of four chapters. The first chapter introduces Hsiao’s biography and his musical style; the second chapter focuses on analyzing Hsiao’s Piano Concerto Op. 53 in C minor from a performer’s perspective; the third chapter is a comparison of Hsiao and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concertos regarding the similarities of orchestration and structure, rhythm and technique, phrasing and articulation, harmony and texture. The chapter also covers the differences in the function of the cadenza, and the interaction between solo piano and orchestra; and the final chapter provides some performance suggestions to the practical issues in regard to phrasing, voicing, technique, color, pedaling, and articulation of Hsiao’s Piano Concerto from the perspective of a pianist.

Classics 1: Program Notes The Sights and Sounds of Stockton: Cityscape John Wineglass and San Joaquin Delta College media students In accordance with its mission to inspire joy and build community through music—and with the aim of generating community pride and awareness through art—the Stockton Symphony teamed up with award-winning composer John Wineglass and San Joaquin Delta College media students under the direction of Adriana Brogger and Kirstyn Russell to create a project titled The Sights and Sounds of Stockton. The Delta College media students, all of whom are from the area and live in the various quadrants of our city, fanned out into the community to gather pictures and videos of their daily environment. They brought the raw footage to class and collaborated to edit the “sights” of Stockton into a feature approximately ten to twelve minutes long. Wineglass visited Stockton several times to get a feel for the area, and he worked with the students on the overall scope of the project as well as details of compilation to achieve a compelling outcome. He then composed the accompanying symphonic score for tonight’s live performance with the Stockton Symphony. This week he has also been meeting with composition students to discuss the composition process and how a composer works with visual components, and he engaged in a public forum with students and members of our community to discuss his work on this project. Winner of three Daytime Emmy Awards and recipient of four additional Emmy nominations, John Wineglass has performed on five continents, before five U.S.

  • An Analysis of Sonata Form in Clarinet Concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Louis Spohr, and Carl Maria Von Weber
An Analysis of Sonata Form in Clarinet Concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Louis Spohr, and Carl Maria von Weber A document submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS in the Performance Studies Division of the College-Conservatory of Music 2012 by Wen-Mi Chen B.M., Peabody Conservatory of Music of The Johns Hopkins University, 2000 M.M., Peabody Conservatory of Music of The Johns Hopkins University, 2003 Committee Chair: Steven Cahn, Ph.D. Committee Member: Ronald Aufmann, Professor Committee Member: Samuel Ng, Ph.D. Abstract Sonata Theory recognizes five types of sonatas based on their rotational designs. The first movement of most eighteenth-century concertos is classified as a Type 5 sonata (concerto movement) and is the most complicated sonata design due to the great variation that exists among individual Type 5 movements. This document contains a brief introduction to Hepokoski and Darcy’s Sonata Theory and a summary of the Type 5 sonata. Chapters two, three, and four are extensive studies and analyses of the clarinet concertos composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Louis Spohr, and Carl Maria von Weber. Comprehensive comparisons of these concertos are provided at the end of chapters three and four. Diagrams 2, 3, and 4 are the result of examining these concerto movements. They indicate the sections, zones, and modules of a sonata form in the movements. Appendix A is a list of terms and abbreviations that are used in the analyses. In addition, Hepokoski and Darcy’s Type 5 sonata default settings and options are included in Appendix B.
