Mass: 7:30am/9:30am/Noon Confessions in church: 7am, 8:45am,11am Pastor’s Column July 25th, 2021 The Precepts of the Catholic Faith Five of Seven Part Series You can read about the first four precepts on our website www.holyredeemervan.org under ‘pastor columns’ Greetings in Christ Our Lord. This week we continue our series on the Precepts of the Catholic Church: “pre” meaning “before”, and “cept” meaning “life” – before there can be full life in God, these seven laws must be observed. Failure to live them out would constitute a mortal sin: when one has knowledge of them, and acts without undue coercion to disregard them. “The obligatory character of these positive laws decreed by pastoral authorities is meant to guarantee to the faithful the very necessary minimum in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in the growth in love of God and neighbor”. Catechism #2041. This week we continue working our way through them by exploring the fifth precept. They are listed here again as a reminder. The Precepts of the Catholic Church 1. To attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation and resting from servile works. 2. To observe the days of abstinence and fasting. 3. To confess our sins to a priest, at least once a year. 4. To receive Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist at least once a year during Easter Season. 5. To contribute to the support of the Church (tithing & volunteering). 6. To obey the laws of the Church concerning Matrimony. 7. To participate in the Church's mission of Evangelization of Souls. There is no Jesus without the Catholic Church, and hence, there is no salvation without the Catholic Church. Let me explain. Jesus Christ, God, founded only one Church and that Church is the Catholic (Greek for ‘universal’) Church. Be- fore the Catholic Church, God made a covenant with the chosen people, now called Jews. If you belong to a religion other than Judaism or Catholicism, then God is not your founder. Jesus is the Messiah of the Jews and Gentiles, with his revelation a new covenant of salvation was created through the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. Everything we know about Jesus Christ, the Holy Trinity, the Communion of saints, heaven, purgatory, and hell comes from the Catholic Church. It was the Catholic Church that wrote the New Testament and decided what books and letters would go into the Bible. It has been the Catholic Church passing on the same faith and sacraments for 2,000 years going back to our first Pope, Peter (pope is Greek for ‘leader’). It is through the font of baptism and the seven sacraments that the doors of heaven are opened for us and God’s grace can reach us in life saving ways. It is through the Catholic Church on earth (militant), in purgatory (suffering), and in heaven (triumphant) that we are united to God and saved for eternal life. If you’re going to heaven, then you will become a member of the Catholic Church either in this life, or in the life to come. The truth of Jesus Christ, as well as his entire mission of salvation, would have disappeared 1900 years ago without an organization that was and still is divinely inspired and protected. That organization, the Catholic Church, has to be support- ed with her member’s time, talent, and treasure or she will fail to achieve what the Lord has set out for her to achieve: the glorification of God and the sanctification of souls. In order for the Church to proclaim the gospel, administer sacraments, teach the faith, and perform the works of mercy; you and I have to volunteer our time, talent, and treasure. We gain more by giving than we do in receiving. Others have a great need for us to share our faith through our time, talent, and treasure to the Church, and we have an equally great need to share it. Please volunteer in whatever ways you can, and incrementally move toward tithing 10% of your income to the Church: 5% to the parish, and the other 5% to other Catholic charities. God and souls are counting on us. Next Week : The sixth precept May Our Lord Jesus Christ Eternally Bless You, Fr. Thomas Nathe New Vancouver Chapel Not in Union with the Pope July 2021 - The Archdiocese of Seattle has learned that on August 1, 2021 Our Lady of Fatima Chapel of the Society of Saint Pius X will relocate from Portland to Vancouver, Washington. The Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), formed in 1970 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, is a priestly fraternity no longer in union with the Pope. Although Pope Benedict XVI lifted the excommunication against Archbishop Lefebvre, the society has no canonical status. Therefore, some sacraments celebrated by these priests are valid but unlawful; other sacraments, particularly marriage, are invalid because of a lack of jurisdiction. Catholics are often drawn to SSPX communities because they celebrate Mass using the Latin Missal of Pope Saint Pius V, which was in use for four centuries until the new missal of Pope Saint Paul VI replaced it not long after the Second Vatican Council.

  • The Crux of the Matter (1984)
The Crux of the Matter (1984) by Most Rev. Donald J. Sanborn Why an April ’83 crisis happened in SSPX, and why it keeps on happening. BEWILDERED is probably the best word to describe the reaction of the faithful to the April break-up of the Society. My impres- sion, even now, is that the faithful who have read the positions of both sides are clear in their minds about the particular issues, but still do not understand just how the whole dispute started. Their impression of the Society, at least in the Northeast District, was one of harmony, steady growth, and optimism. By the Spring of 1983, the seminary had achieved its peak in growth rate, both from the point of view of new vocations and physical expansion. The laity were enthusiastic and forward-looking; people were confident that their spiritual needs would be met by the ever-expanding and apparently trouble-free Society of Saint Pius X. December, 1982, brought in $60,000 to the Seminary building fund; January $50,000. To my disbelief, it seemed that we were going to get through the first part of our contract with- out having to borrow a cent. Never had there been such a surge in new vocations; never had it looked so good for the Fall semes- ter. Had things been normal this past year, I estimate that we would have accepted 20 to 25 new candidates. Then disaster struck, like the tornado that descends swiftly but silently from the somber, sultry cloud upon its unsuspecting victims. Accusations were hurled, priests were thrown out on to the street, seminarians left.

  • Concerning an SSPX Dossier on Sedevacantism
CONCERNING A SSPX DOSSIER ON SEDEVACANTISM, BY REV. DOMINIQUE BOULET, SSPX. by John Lane “The Society admits the possibility of discussion regarding whatever explanation it may advance with regard to the nature of John Paul II's authority.” (Sedevacantism: A False Solution to a Real Problem, Angelus Press, Kansas, 2003, p. 22) This is a step-by-step consideration and refutation of the little book by Fr. Dominique Boulet of the SSPX, entitled, Sedevacantism. It is presented in the spirit of fraternal charity, in acceptance of the invitation extended by the priests of the Italian District of the SSPX in 2003, to discuss the “problem of the Pope.” Our first task is to say what the sedevacantist thesis actually is. If we were to summarise Archbishop Lefebvre’s position, we could describe it as a minimalist approach to the mystery of this crisis. That is, he combined two principles: 1. We must obey God rather than men. It is licit to resist a superior who commands something sinful, because it is never lawful to sin for any reason. 2. We must not tempt God by taking extraordinary actions unless absolutely necessary. Thus St. Thomas More waited until after he was condemned to death before openly criticising the schismatic actions of Henry VIII. (And some traditionalists would doubtless have accused More of liberalism for this silence!) If I were to define the sedevacantist thesis, I would also say that I agree that we must be minimalist, and thus be prepared to leave mysteries as mysteries if there are no clear answers, and we must be humble, and admit that we do not necessarily have the complete solution to every problem.

  • Modern Alternative Popes*
Modern Alternative Popes* Magnus Lundberg Uppsala University The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) is arguably the most important event in modern Catholicism, and a major act on the twentieth-century religious scene at large. On several points, the conciliar fathers made changes in how the Catholic Church perceived the modern world. The language in the decrees was different from earlier councils’, and the bishops opened up for ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, seeing at least “seeds of truth” in other religious traditions. The conciliar fathers also voted in favour of liberty of religion, as meaning something more than the right to practise Catholic faith. A very concrete effect of the Council was the introduction of the New Mass Order (Novus Ordo Missae) in 1969 that replaced the traditional Roman rite, decreed by Pius V in 1570. Apart from changes in content, under normal circumstances, the new mass should be read in the vernacular, not in Latin as before. Though many Catholics welcomed the reforms of Vatican II, many did not. In the period just after the end of the Council, large numbers of priests and nuns were laicized, few new priest candidates entered the seminaries, and many laypeople did not recognize the church and the liturgy, which they had grown up with. In the post- conciliar era, there developed several traditionalist groups that criticized the reforms and in particular the introduction of the Novus Ordo. Their criticism could be more or less radical, and more or less activist. Many stayed in their parishes and attended mass there, but remained faithful to traditional forms of devotions and paid much attention to modern Marian apparitions.

Fundamentalism in Christianity Intellectual Output 2, Unit V The European Commission support for the production of this publication does not constitute an endorsement of the contents which reflects the views only of the authors, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein. Version No. Author, institution Date/Last Update 3 - Renaud Rochette, Institut européen en sciences des 15/09/2018 religions – Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, PSL - Chrystal Vanel, post-doctoral researcher – Groupe sociétés, religions, laïcités, CNRS / EPHE Protestant fundamentalism and Catholic fundamentalism The terms “fundamentalism” and “traditionalist” refer to specific forms of Christian radicalism in Protestant and Roman Catholic contexts. The term “integralists”, in the Roman Catholic context, first referred to Catholics who wanted to subordinate the state to Catholic moral principles and were against the idea of a society ruled by secular values. Since the Second Vatican Council that opened Catholicism to modernity, integralism was no longer supported by Catholic authorities but was endorsed by a new group called “traditionalists”, who claim to be faithful to a Roman Catholic tradition that they argue cannot change: thus they still hold on to the Latin Mass. The term “fundamentalism” first appeared among American Protestants at the beginning of the 20th century as a reaction against theological modernism; fundamentalists intend to go back to what they argue are the “fundamentals” of Christianity, among which a literal reading of the Bible, that leads them to oppose modern science and theology, thus their opposition to the theory of evolution. Catholic traditionalism and Protestant fundamentalism are therefore reactions to political and theological modernity, and as reactions to modernity they are also products of modernity: traditionalist Catholics and fundamentalist Protestants advocate for a moral, doctrinal and liturgical order that they claim should not change through adaptation to modernity.

  • Jews and Judaism in the Political Theology of Radical Catholic Traditionalists
Jews and Judaism in the Political Theology of Radical Catholic Traditionalists Mark Weitzman ABSTRACT The controversies over Holocaust-denying Bishop Richard Williamson, and earlier over Mel Gibson’s film, The Passion of the Christ, have given prominence to radical Catholic traditionalists and their growing influence. The recent pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI saw a great investment of political capital seeking reconciliation with the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), yet this effort failed, in great part due to the antisemitism that permeates the Society. Williamson and the Holocaust deniers are often represented as isolated individual representatives of the radical traditionalists, especially after Williamson’s expulsion from the SSPX. In reality it can be argued that the radical traditionalist movement is based upon classical supercessionist theology and that there has often been an effort to cloak this theology from public view. I will trace its roots from Europe to the United States, focusing on Father Charles Coughlin, the “radio priest” whose audience stretched into the millions before World War II; and the Irish priest, Denis Fahey, the theologian most quoted by Coughlin, whose influence continues to be strong in those circles today. I will also survey connections with far right extremists and neo-Nazis and demonstrate the shared Holocaust denial and classical theological antisemitism that link these groups and threatens to negate the gains made since Vatican II that have nurtured the Jewish-Catholic relationship over the past 45 years. Finally, we will assess some of the possible implications of this trend for the future of Jewish-Catholic relations, particularly after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis.

  • Vol 2, No 81 Archbishop Lefebvre Defies Pope Paul
SACRAMENTO DIOCESAN ARCHIVES Vol 2 Father John Boll, Diocesan Archivist No 81 ARCHBISHOP LEFEBVRE DEFIES POPE PAUL The Conflict Intensifies By John Mutig, published in the September 2, 1976 edition of the Catholic Herald VATICAN CITY (NC) Following the dramatic traditionalist Mass celebrated August 29 by suspended Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the next move in the escalating conflict between Rome and the ultra- conservative archbishop belongs to Pope Paul VI. Many observers and Church officials here guess that the Pope will formally excommunicate the 70 year-old archbishop for celebrating the Mass in Lille, France. Pope Paul himself has called the celebration “a challenge to these keys placed in our hands by Christ.” Church lawyers have said that the process of formal excommunication would take at least a month to complete. A decree of excommunication, should one be issued by Pope Paul, would be the final act in a long series of skirmishes between the Vatican and the archbishop, who rejects most of the decrees of the Second Vatican Council as heresy and still celebrates the pre- conciliar Mass in Latin. Archbishop Lefebvre, who has thousands of followers in the US, England, France and other western European countries, was suspend- ed from priestly func- tions July 24. The suspension was the Vatican’s reaction to the illegal ordination of 13 priests June 29 by the archbishop at his ultra- conservative Econe Sem- inary in Switzerland.
