On 19th April 2015 Sir Raymond Carr died aged 96. A historian and Oxford don, he specialized in the histories of Sweden, Latin America and Spain. “Though he was one of Britain’s greatest historians, Carr was far better known in Spain than in his native land”, writes Paul Preston. Arguably his finest work, Spain 1808-1939, was published in 1966 and remained a defining text on Spanish history to this day. His involvement with the country began in 1950, on the honeymoon that followed his marriage to Sara Strickland, which continued on many research trips conducted in university vacations in the 1950s and 1960s. Carr taught at Oxford from the 1960s till 1987, when on retiring he was knighted. Apart from his academic excellence Raymond Carr is also well known for his eccentricities and “racy social life”, serving behind a bar in Sweden when on vacation from Oxford in his fifties, throwing legendary parties at his Oxford home with his wife Sara. In middle-age he took up fox hunting and wrote English Fox Hunting: A History (1976) with the help of his aristocratic wife. On Raymond’s death, the Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, spoke of how he “transformed and reinvigorated the way in which Spain and its history is viewed ... with the irreplaceable scrutiny of a master”, which he displayed in many works on the country, most notably: Spain: Dictatorship to Democracy (1979). Albert Raymond Maillard Carr is, after Sara’s and their son Matthew’s death in 2004 and 2011, survived by two sons and one daughter. More on the death of Raymond in Carr can be found in these articles written by Paul Preston & María Jesús Gonzàlez http://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/apr/22/sir-raymond-carr http://cultura.elpais.com/cultura/2015/04/20/actualidad/1429567057_712 2 * Conferences/ Lectures María Zambrano amongst the philosophers: a reconsideration 21-22 May 2015, Keynes Library, School of Arts, Birkbeck, University of London, 43 Gordon Square, London WC1H 0PD The purpose of this International Conference is to recuperate María Zambrano as an important 20th century thinker, and to increase the visibility of her work for an English-speaking audience. The work of Spanish philosopher María Zambrano constitutes one of the most original contributions to 20th century thought. Her life, and the development of her ideas are marked, like those of her contemporaries Walter Benjamin, Edmund Husserl, Hannah Arendt or Theodor Adorno, by the crisis of modernity that culminates in the two World Wars. A Republican exile since 1939 from the Spanish Civil War, another manifestation of that European crisis, Zambrano understood that the collapse of Europe was a symptom of the radical demise of modernity and its thought systems. She would devote her philosophical career to thinking through that crisis and to reconstructing alternatives to it. The conference organisers are: Mari Paz Balibrea (Birkbeck), Francis Lough (University of Birmingham), and Antolín Sánchez Cuervo (Instituto de Filosofía-Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas). Submission of paper proposals is now closed. For more details about the conference, please visit Zambrano Conference. The conference language will be English.
