The Journal recognizes and supports the many diverse perspectives and methods across the several social sciences; it neither espouses nor champions any specific ideological, theoretical, methodological, or political commitments. The Journal is committed to intellectual integrity, rigorous standards of scholarship, and rational and civil discourse. It encourages the presentation and free exchange of diverse viewpoints and seeks to foster open and critical inquiry that privileges no particular standpoint, while operating within the limits of a standard of discourse and reason that distinguishes between the pursuit of knowledge and truth versus mere assertions of dogma. Although every effort will be made to publish issues that represent a fair balance of scholarship across the entire spectrum of social science disciplines, the Journal’s first priority will always be to publish the best social science research available at any given time, regardless of disciplinary representation. Toward this end, papers will be accepted for editorial review and publication in the annual issue of the journal at any time of year, whether or not they were presented at the Annual Conference. Persons who submit articles for review are expected to adhere to Author Submission Guidelines detailed elsewhere in this journal and online at www.iass1.org. The Journal has been published annually in the fall both in print and online since Volume 14 (2010–2011). Articles submitted for possible publication are subject to a double-blind review process. The Senior Editor in Chief alone is responsible for making the final decision on all manuscripts and content for publication in the Journal, and the Senior Editor’s decision on publication content is not subject to review by any other member, officer, or body of the IASS. v SENIOR EDITOR’S NOTE I am pleased to present Volume 20 (2017) of the Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences. Our latest issue leads off with a thought-provoking essay about disaster management and the roles of nongovernmental organizations and local government with a case study of several catastrophes that struck Japan in March 2011. Although this article focuses on Japan, it is not hard to see how it might be applied to the very recent situation of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma hitting Texas and Florida this past September, demonstrating the relevance of a social science perspective for understanding our contemporary world. In addition, Volume 20 (2017) of JIASS offers eight impressive research articles exploring a wide variety of topics from several different social science perspectives. Professors Dulaney and Gunn analyze the strategic use of apologies by businesses in response to several food-poisoning incidents. Professor Gao examines the emergence and development of a public sphere during China’s May Fourth Era (1915–1926). Professor Hare reports on her interesting study of the gender ratio of characters in more than 100 popular animated films from 1980 through 2016, asking whether any significant change has occurred during this long period. Professor Kordsmeier offers an in-depth analysis based on participant observation and interviews with theater workers about how stage managers establish leadership authority informally through emotion work. Professors Schnarre and Adam address parasocial relationships (perceived friendships with media figures that are not reciprocated), comparing men’s and women’s views of such relationships. Professors Statham and Greider offer a compelling analysis of the importance of unions in contemporary times, focusing on UAW Local 72, which represents factory workers in Kenosha, Wisconsin, based on qualitative data collected over a 20-year period. Professors VanAlstine, Cox, and Roden, with Doctor Boothby, continue in their study of the social impacts of diversity (ethnicity, religion, and language), with a focus on Indiana. Finally, Doctors Vergo and Poulikis, along with several graduate students, explore African American undergraduate students’ perceptions of factors that influence their decisions to attend doctoral programs in psychology. All of these papers represent a wide-ranging and provocative set of studies sure to be of interest to all social scientists! The current volume represents the second issue published since I was reelected as senior editor in chief, and the seventh volume I have edited and published since I assumed the editor’s role in 2010. Much has been accomplished over the past seven years, including moving the journal to an online as well as a print publication. Since my first year as editor, beginning with Volume 14 (2010–2011), papers submitted to JIASS are no longer limited to those presented at the annual meeting and conference. While authors of papers presented at our annual conference continue to be encouraged to submit their work for possible publication, we also encourage social scientists from anywhere in the world to submit papers for review. To ensure quality and fairness, papers submitted for possible publication undergo, after a preliminary review by the editorial staff, a double- blind peer-review process involving two referees.     Harm in Harmony: A Socioecological Perspective on East Asian Collectivism Shi Liu Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Shi Liu All Rights Reserved Abstract Harm in Harmony: A Socioecological Perspective on East Asian Collectivism Shi Liu Decades of research have described East Asian cultures as collectivistic, often characterized by ingroup relationships that are harmonious and cooperative. I propose an alternative account of East Asian Collectivism—the Harm-in-Harmony Theory. Specifically, I propose that East Asian culture can be better understood as a tension between high levels of cooperation and competition within groups. The co-existence of cooperation and competition drives competition covert. To cope with covert competition, people in East Asia develop a heightened threat-detection system—ingroup vigilance—a cognitive tendency to perceive ingroup members as hostile and threatening. The Harm-in-Harmony theory provides an alternative account for a number of cross-cultural differences (i.e., East Asians being more responsive and attentive to others) that have previously been explained through harmonious interdependence. This work contributes to a more balanced view of collectivism, revealing its interpersonal tensions in the forms of covert competition and ingroup vigilance.     Proposed Symposium Toward an IP (Indigenous Psychology) informed AP (Asian Psychology) Chair: Louise Sundararajan, Ph.D., Ed.D. Summary Eastern psychologies have two sub‐groups, IP (Indigenous Psychology) and AP (Asian Psychology) (Sundararajan, in press). The relationship between IP and AP ranges from allergic reactions to benign neglect. This symposium explores the possibilities of dialogue and integration between these two tributaries of psychology in the Far East.     Sikolohiyang Pilipino: 50 Years of Critical-Emancipatory Social Science in the Philippines Narcisa Paredes-Canilao University of the Philippines Baguio Maria Ana Babaran-Diaz University of the Philippines Baguio Abstract Sikolohiyang Pilipino, or efforts of Filipino psychologists and social scientists to indigenize Psychology in the Philippines started in the 1960s, further crystallized into a distinct movement from the mid-1970s and continued to flourish in the 21st century. Using the broad outlines of critical-emancipatory social science, we argue in this paper that Sikolohiyang Pilipino since its inception in the works of V.D. Enriquez, was meant and has proven to be a liberated and liberating psychology (literally malaya at mapagpalayang sikolohiya), and may therefore be a unique type of criticl psychology in the Philippine setting. We first examine the academic and cultural circumstances that led to the movement of Sikolohiyang Pilipino, then describe its aims, methodologies, advocacies and theoretical contributions and how these resulted in the establishment of professional organizations, research programs, and curricular offerings. The movement from the traditional academic psychology as taught in the universities was brought about by dissatisfaction with too much emphasis on Western theories particularly on the tendency for quantification to emulate the scientific method to examine human phenomena. The end of the colonization period in the Philippines brought with it the beginning of a post-colonial psychology that focused on indigenous knowledge, practices, and methods. Secretaries are doing it as part of their daily noon yoga classes. Preadolescent teenagers dropped off at the YMCA by their mothers on a Saturday morning are learning it as part of their karate training. Truck drivers and housewives in the Stress Reduction Program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center are practicing a combination of Hindu yoga and Buddhist insight meditation to control hypertension. Star athletes prepare themselves for a demanding basketball game with centering techniques they learned in Zen. [1] Dhyana is the generic Sanskrit term for meditation, which in the Yoga Sutras refers to both the act of inward contemplation in the broadest sense and more technically to the intermediate state between mere attention to an object (dharana) and complete absorption in it (samadhi). [2] The earliest known reference to such practice on the Indian subcontinent occurs on one of the seals, a figure seated in the lotus posture, found in the ruins of the pre-Aryan civilizations at Harappa and Mohenjodaro which existed prior to 1500 BCE. Most of the orthodox Hindu schools of philosophy derive their meditation techniques from yoga, but superimpose their own theoretical understanding of consciousness onto the results of the practice.
