Crayford Town Archive thus have a wonderful opportunity to tell the story of Sir Cloudesley Shovell, Lord of the Manor of Crayford and Rear Admiral of England, whose death aboard his flagship Association in 1707 instigated this act. Shovell, of humble birth, entered the navy as a boy (1662) and came to national prominence in the wars against the Barbary pirates. Detested by Pepys, hated by James II, Shovell became the finest seaman of Queen Anne’s age. In 1695 he moved to Crayford after becoming the local M.P. -

Sidney Cooper Gallery ADAM CHODZKO DESIGN FOR A FOLD SECONDARY LEARNING PACK 16 OCT – 21 NOV 2015 ADAM CHODZKO 2013 We are Ready for your Arrival [Detail] (2013 at Raven Row, Londo, Two person exhibition with Iain Baxter.) Sculpture, video, drawing and photography, exploring manifestations of the unconscious relationships between COVER IMAGE individuals and groups; their excesses, displacements and disappearances. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Adam Chodzko’s art explores the interactions and possibilities of human behaviour. Exhibiting internationally since 1991, Chodzko works across media, from video installation to subtle interventions, with a practice that is situated both within the gallery and the wider public realm. His work investigates and invents possibilities of collective imagination in order to reveal the realities and fantasies that might emerge from the processes of engagement his practice evolves. Design for a Fold is a new installation incorporating many of Chodzko’s works made ‘locally’ since 2001, mapping his particular engagement with diverse places, times and communities around where he lives and works in Whitstable, Kent, alongside new work which seeks to root, or fold, the idea of the local within another, apparently remote, alien and distant place; Beppu, Japan. Chodzko proposes a new understanding of Kent, that questions assumptions of who, what, when and where we might be. Design for a Fold suggests, through a recontextualising of his archive of artwork, new, dynamic and global connections that weave together the real and hidden with collective mythology and imagination. On 20 January 2014 I was delighted to attend a private viewing of the Rochester Bridge Trust’s exhibition Reconstructing Rochester Bridge , displayed at the Royal Engineers Museum. This exhibition celebrates the centenary year of the rebuilding of the Rochester Old Bridge, which was completed in 1914. We were entertained with a short review of the building of this bridge accompanied by drinks and canapés (these just kept coming - tray after tray carried by smiling waitresses!) It really was a very enjoyable evening, and a couple of the photographs are featured here. With the 100 th anniversary of the start of World War One approaching, FOMA aims to commemorate this with a series of exhibitions at MALSC each year until 1918. -

GB 1204 U2555 Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre This catalogue was digitised by The National Archives as part of the National Register of Archives digitisation project NRA 25395 The National Archives U2555 Rochester-upon-Medway Studies Centre U2555 RECORDS OFSTROOD WATER COMPANY 1848-1912 WITH MISCELLANEOUS PRINTED MATTER AND PICTORIAL MATERIAL RELATING TO THE MEDWA Y TOWNS c. 1850-c. 1943 U2555 Deposited by Mr. VMNMBft Slough, London! on permanent loan to Kent County Council at Kent Archives Office, County Hall, Maidstone 2 August 1982 Transferred to Rochester-upon-Medway Studies Centre, Civic Centre, Strood 20 July 1995 1 U2555 INTRODUCTION Strood Water Works were established in 1849 by a private company "who thought that some better supply of water was required than was afforded by the Parish Pump and a few private wells" (Souvenir, below). The first buildings were erected by Henry Patterson of Strood and additional plant was added in 1858, while a cottage for the "engine driver" was built in 1865. Patterson and Semark of Strood extended the premises in 1868 including a second reservoir. Engines throughout the period were provided by William Simpson & Co. The Works supplied the area comprising the parts of Frindsbury and Strood lying below the level of the reservoir. A private proposal to supply Rochester with company water in 1853 came to nothing but Rochester City Council promoted the City Improvement Act of 1880 by which they acquired the company as part of its wider schemes for developing Strood and Frindsbury as districts within the expanding City geographical jurisdiction. From 1880 therefore further records of Strood Water Works and supplies may be found among the archives of the City of Rochester, for which see below.
