Prof. Dr. Ilkay Yorgancı Maloney ABSTRACT This research studies the nature of cultural exchange between indigenous Turkish/Cypriot and Nigerian students studying at the Eastern Mediterranean University in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyrus (TRNC) in the city of Famagusta. The study used qualitative approach in order to develop an in-depth understanding of the issue. In order to collect data, semi-structured interviews were conducted both with the Turkish Cypriot students and Nigerian Students. Interviews conducted supplied valuable data about the nature and types of friendships, and the impacts of these experiences regarding the Turkish Cypriot and Nigerian students. The results showed that both the Nigerian and the Turkish Cypriot students welcomed each other and were ready to exchange and learn from their cultural differences which aided a strong relationship between both groups. Keywords: North Cyprus, educational tourism, cultural exchange, acculturation. iii ÖZ Bu araştırma Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti’nin Mağusa şehrinde bulunan Doğu Akdeniz Universitesi’nin Nijeryalı ve yerli Kıbrıslı Türk öğrenciler arasındaki kültür alışverişinin türünü incelemektedir. Bu araştırmada konu hakkında geniş kapsamlı bir anlayışın oluşması için nicel analiz kullanıldı. Veri toplamak için Nijeryalı ve Kıbrıslı Türk öğrencilerle yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler gerçekleştirildi. Bu görüşmeler sayesinde arkadaşlık türü ve deneyimlerin Nijeryalı ve Kıbrıslı Türk öğrencilerlin üstündeki etkileri hakkında önemli bilgiler edinildi. Sonuçlar Nijeryalı ve Kıbrıslı Türk öğrencilerin birbirlerini içtenlikle karşıladığını ve kültür alışverişi gerçekleştirip kültürel farklılıklarından ders çıkarmaya hazır olduğunu gösterdi. Bu ise iki grup arasında güçlü bir ilişkinin kurulmasına yardımcı oldu. Travel for the purposes of education is not new. However, although it is not a new concept, it has been growing over the years and expanding to include different programs such as foreign exchange-student programs, leave and staff exchanges, training and educational tours, school workshops and trips, study and work tours, short courses, method and language courses, conferences and seminars, academic meetings, continuing adult education programs, winter and summer schools, advance practice training, internship periods, sports and coaching seminars, cultural and historical tours (Hayes and McCann, 2013). In certain parts of the world, educational tourism is growing so much so that, some counties such as Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), making educational tourism the leading sector of their economies (Cyprus Mail Online, Monday 28 May 2018). Even though educational tourism contributes immensely to the economies of host communities, as Lanegran, (2005) pointed out, what is also important here is that an educational tourist also exploits the cultural and social aspects of the new location or destination, and not is only respondents in many activities provided by the destinations, but also relates with the host society during their visit. As the number of international students grows rapidly in a community so does their presence in that community. 1 Thus, higher education institutions such as EMU play a vital role in promoting global learning. They recruit and register international students with a potential of cultural exchanges or cross-cultural interactions for both foreign and domestic students and the community at large. Cross-cultural interactions, used interchangeably with “intercultural interactions”, provide opportunities for give-and-take or a mutual experience or interaction exchange with somebody from another ethnicity.

The majority of these hotels belong to Greek Cypriot displaced persons who were forced to leave their properties following the Turkish invasion of 1974 or have been built illegally on properties belonging to displaced Greek Cypriots, in violation of the latter’s property rights and without their consent. A number of hotels belong to Turkish Cypriots or have been built on land belonging to Turkish Cypriots. The European Court of Human Rights, in its Judgment of 18 December 1996, on the individual application of the Greek Cypriot displaced owner from Kyrenia, Mrs. Titina Loizidou, against Turkey, and in the Fourth Interstate Application of Cyprus against Turkey of 10 May 2001, upheld the rights of the refugees to their properties. In the Loizidou case, the Court ordered the Government of Turkey to compensate the applicant for the time period of deprivation of use of her property and to provide full access and allow peaceful enjoyment of her property in Kyrenia. The right of the displaced owners to their properties was reconfirmed in the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (Dec. 2005) regarding the application of Myra Xenides- Arestis v. Turkey, and has since been repeatedly reconfirmed in a multitude of cases brought by Greek Cypriot owners of property in the occupied part of Cyprus against Turkey]. It should also be reminded that, according to the United Nations Principles on Housing and Property Restitution for Refugees and Displaced Persons (the Pinheiro principles) “all refugees and displaced persons have the right to have restored to them any housing, land or property of which they were arbitrarily or unlawfully deprived..”.

While conducting the research, principals and deputy principals, who are administrators in primary schools, were accepted as leaders in schools. At this point, it has been tried to determine how teachers perceive corporate communication in TRNC primary schools and whether their administrators show a leading role in terms of communication skills. Among the most important results of the research; Primary school teachers with a bachelor's degree had a more positive attitude towards the communication skills of their administrators than primary school teachers with a master's degree. Most of the teachers (69.4%) participating in our study stated that the most important feature that a leader should have is "effective communication skills".     PART 2 History & Theology Andrea Stylianou Macquarie University An investigation into how Greek Cypriots throughout the Hellenic diaspora have been affected by the missing persons of Cyprus from the 1974 Turkish invasion Abstract The article aims to investigate how Greek Cypriots throughout the international community, and who have missing persons in their family from the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, have been affected for over more than three decades. This globalised humanitarian issue of about 1,464 Greek Cypriot-and 494 Turkish Cypriot-missing persons - both military personnel and civilians, including women and children - is still an ongoing problem and is regarded as a very significant diplomatic Cypriot Hellenic issue. Following relevant United Nations General Assembly resolutions, a Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) was established in 1981 to investigate the fate of the missing persons in Cyprus. The CMP officially began its program for exhumations and identification of the missing persons on 30 June 2005, which includes relying mainly on testimonies gathered over the years. By June 2012, the remains of 321 people from the 1974 Turkish invasion have been identified after exhumations in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus - 255 of these remains belong to Greek Cypriot and 66 to Turkish Cypriot missing persons (CMP 2012). Introduction This article is based on: (1) an analysis of interviewing relatives of missing persons who are now based in Australia, and (2) looking at surveys done on the CMP. The methodology in this research is based on autoethnology, 133 History & Theology PART 2 a form of qualitative research employed by sociologists that involves self­ observation, which explores the researcher’s personal experience and connects the interviewee’s content with the wider cultural, political and social meanings and understandings (Ellis 2004: xix).

The exhibition aims at sensitizing the broader public to the tragic consequences of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. An effort is made to trace, as much as possible, the pain caused by the war and the uprooting of tenths of thousands of people from their homes. At the core of the presentation lies the systematic destruction of cultural heritage in the island’s occupied areas, which persists to this day as a result of ethnic cleansing and religious fanaticism. As proof of the above, damages to archaeological sites, ecclesiastical monuments and all non-Muslim cemeteries, as well as thefts intended to offer antiquities for sale at a profit, are showcased here. In some cases, photographic evidence which has been brought to light for the first time is put forth. This exhibition is divided into thematic units which are separated from one another by their different colours. Each panel includes a title and a brief text, whilst being supplemented by pertinent ‘before and after 1974’ visual material. The first unit introduces the nine occupied municipalities, with a historical outline, their most significant monuments and their present state.

    Online Journal of Art and Design volume 9, issue 4, October 2021 Appropriation of Church Buildings in Northern Cyprus Yasemin İnce Güney* and Hülya Yüceer** *Balıkesir University, [email protected] **İzmir Institute of Technology, [email protected] ABSTRACT The appropriation of places of worship by communities associated with different religions has been a common practice throughout history, although the aims of and processes for such appropriations may vary. In some cases, it can be interpreted as a cultural conquest. Alternatively, it can be a convenient adaptation to provide a place for prayer while maintaining the sanctity of the place. The process of appropriation provides an understanding of cultures and their change over time. Given the changing dynamics of long, on-going conflicts in Cyprus, this article aims to trace the relationship between heritage and contemporary cultural dynamics by examining the process of the appropriation of church buildings in northern Cyprus before and after the conflict that resulted in the division of the island in 1974. Keywords: Cyprus, church, mosque, heritage, conflict INTRODUCTION The Republic of Cyprus, established in 1960, has been a troubled state since the armed conflict in 1963 when the Turkish Cypriot legislators rejected the proposed amendments to the constitution and Turkish representation left the government. The political problems between the two communities eventually led to the permanent division of the island following a military intervention by Turkey in 1974. This dramatic development was accompanied by a massive population movement between the north and the south. The division forced both communities to separate and have no contact for the next thirty years.

The central contribution of the dissertation is the development of the concept of social forgetting as a corollary of social memory. I consider forgetting to include selective remembering, mis/disremembering, and omitting, distorting, or silencing past events and experiences, in order to shape collective memory. In the literature, remembering is usually privileged over forgetting, which is taken as negation, neglect, failure to remember, or unintended social amnesia in which people are considered passive actors. This study, however, shows that forgetting can be a desirable goal and positive process for some social actors, accomplished by obscuring material evidence of what another community wishes remembered.
