Rifleman Sanjay Kumar (No. J 3760533), son of Shri Durga Ram was born on March 3, 1976, in village Bakain, district Bilaspur, . He was enrolled in Jammu and Kashmir Rifles on June 26, J 996. 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles was inducted in the Drass Sector in June 1999, when the Kargil JAK Rifles War was at its climax. The Battalion was tasked to capture Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley held by Pakistani troops in good strength. Rifleman Sanjay Kumar volunteered to lead the attacking column of the Battalion tasked to capture area Flat Top of Point 4875 on July 4. During the attack when automatic fire from one of the enemy sangars stalled the progress of the column, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, with utter disregard to his personal safety, charged at the enemy. In the ensuing hand to hand combat, he killed three of the intruders but suffered serious injuries in the process. However, despite injuries, he charged on the second sangar. Taken by surprise, the enemy started running leaving behind one Universal Machine Gun. Rifleman Born - March 3, 1976 Sanjay Kumar picked up the UMG and killed the fleeing enemy. Bleeding profusely, he refused to be evacuated and choose to stay on with his column. This motivated his comrades, who overcoming the treacherous terrain, charged the enemy and captured the area Flat Top, their objective.
