Well, as a runner and bicyclist for 46 years and most of our friends are runners and bicyclist as well, I know several 16 year olds that could never keep up with these 60 ( and older) year olds! Perhaps, I am out of touch, but most of the young people I see these days are not fit at all! It seems if they are not involved with organized sports, they are not physically active at all. Friends I have that are physically active and have teenagers, their teens seem to be more active than the "average" teen. I guess " lead by example" is always the best. I know when our son and daughter were teens, they saw how beneficial exercise was to us and they both were very active. Our son loved to bicycle and our daughter loved to play tennis. Both are still very active as adults and have passed that on to their children. When I see large groups of young people and see the amount of them that are obese, it saddens me. You certainly cannot make them exercise, but I think if more of their parents were active, they too would be. Our country has certainly become so much more sedentary over the last several decades. How do we turn this around? I also believe that our young people are just too wrapped up in their "electronic" devices and are not spending time exercising. There again, how do we get these young people to understand the importance of physical fitness? I know there have been running programs set up by different clubs, etc. Some have been very successful, some have not. Like I said earlier, you can't make young people be physically active, but how do we get them to WANT to be physically active??? Wishing you happy and healthy running and/or walking.
