“Charles Allen.” [Obituary] Shortsville Enterprise. Jan. 26, 1968. p. 4. Obituary says that he worked for the Lehigh Valley RR and lived on Littleville Rd. in Shortsville. He died at the VA hospital in Batavia. The obituary says he was a veteran of World War II (Clearly an error). He was also a member of Turner-Schrader Post American Legion. It said that burial would be in Gorham Cemetery.

[Town of Manchester] and was a machinist for the Lehigh Valley RR for many years. It does not mention veteran status except to say that he was a life-long member of the Turner-Schrader Post, American Legion in Shortsville.

It mentions that he lived near Ferguson’s Corners in the Town of Benton and had three brothers, two of whom were in the service. The article says Allen enlisted at Geneva in Jul. 1917 and was wounded three times and lost two fingers.

(p. 617) Available on the Internet from Campbell’s grave. Ancestry.com. Register of officers of the National Guard gives information on Campbell’s prior service. It mentions service in the US Army 1905-1908. It also indicates service in the National Guard not in federal service starting in 1902. In 1927 he was a federally recognized 1st Lt. in Co. B, 108th Inf. NY National Guard in Geneva.

Campbell, LaVerne F. New York, New York National Guard Service Cards, 1917-1954. Subseries 1: Discharged Prior to WWII (1917-1938) Burke, William - Clark, Kermit B. Available on the Internet from Ancestry.com. State record of service in non-federal New York Guard shows that Campbell enlisted in Co. B, 3rd Rgt. NYG in 1916 and served until 1922. It then appears that he served in the federally recognized National Guard for some time prior to 1933. By common criteria, Campbell would not be considered a veteran of World War I. However, but virtue of his early enlisted service he is a veteran.

On his draft registration, Dunn stated that he was a natural born citizen living in Ovid (Seneca Co.), NY. He was working for Arthur Connelly as a farmer. Dunn named his father, Peter, as a next of kin confirming information on Findagrave.com. Dunn, however, gave his birth year as 1899.
