INTRODUCTION 1.1 General 1.1.1 Atkins Limited (Atkins) has been instructed by Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) to prepare a Phase 1 Geo-environmental Desk Study for the proposed development of a new visitor complex and associated facilities off Swinecote Road, Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire. 1.1.2 The purpose of the desk study is to define the geo-environmental conditions at the site and assess potential redevelopment constraints including environmental and geotechnical risk issues. 1.1.3 The report will commence with a review of the site location and current condition together with the recorded historical development of the site area. The report will then review, and summarise, the published geological and hydrogeological information available and the information contained with a site specific Envirocheck Report and Local Authority archives. This data will be used to develop a Preliminary Conceptual Site Model (PCSM) which will highlight potential environmental risk issues. The report concludes with a summary of the geo- environmental conditions at the site and recommendations for further work. 1.2 Information Reviewed 1.2.1 The following table summarises the information reviewed where available during the preparation of this report. Environment Agency – Groundwater Vulnerability Hydrogeological information Maps Envirocheck Report Various information including searches on databases held by The Environment Agency, Coal Authority, Ordnance Survey, British Geological Survey, English Nature, National Radiological Protection Board and site investigation records. 1.3 Scope of Works 1.3.1 The desk study and the associated site reconnaissance aims to collate background historical and geo-environmental data to define, where possible, site constraints and confirm the requirements of any further stages of investigation and assessment. 1.3.2 A site reconnaissance was undertaken to gather information on: • access constraints for the intrusive phase • site layout, including presence and condition of above ground buildings and structures (where present), surface covering, drainage, evidence of below ground services • general topography • evidence of ground disturbance, subsidence etc • vegetation type, evidence of distress • significant odours, discharges, visual and olfactory evidence of contamination • land uses in the vicinity of the site, presence of watercourses. 1.3.3 In accordance with the framework set out within CLR11 and the technical guidance provided in CLR7, CLR9 and CLR10, the desk study will be used to formulate a preliminary conceptual site model (PCSM) whereby potential risk issues are identified. This will allow the scope of the intrusive works to be finalised to ensure the appropriate data is gathered. SITE AREA 2.1 Site Location 2.1.1 The site is located off the B6034 Swinecote Road, Edwinstowe and covers an area of approximately 15.42ha (38.1acres). The Ordnance Survey National Grid Reference (OSNGR) for the approximate centre of the site is SK 628 672. An extract of the OS Map showing the site is included within the Envirocheck Report contained within Appendix A. A site plan is presented as Figure 1. 2.2 Site Description 2.2.1 The site is currently accessed off Swinecote Road, Edwinstowe. A site walkover was undertaken on 23rd October 2006 to investigate the aspects given within section 1.3.2 of this report. 2.2.2 The site is irregular in shape and currently comprises two agricultural fields divided by a broken hedgerow with occasional mature trees; shown within Figure 1. The site topography is generally undulating. The site levels fall by approximately 17m from the highest point along the northern boundary to the lowest point adjacent to the hedgerow along the eastern boundary, levels then rise by approximately 1m towards the southern boundary. At the time of the walkover the cultivated areas of the site were crop-free, a triangle of land adjacent to the western boundary has been left fallow and comprised long grass. 2.2.3 The site is bounded by post and rail or post and wire fencing to the north, east and west and hedgerows along part of the southern and western boundaries. The B6034 Swinecote Road bounds the site along part of the western boundary. 2.2.4 There was no obvious evidence of ground disturbance or subsidence across the site area. There was no visible evidence of surface water within the site area. No visual or olfactory evidence of contamination was noted during the site reconnaissance. 2.3 Adjacent Areas 2.3.1 The site is within a mixed use area, with ancient woodland to the northwest and west of the site, residential housing and allotment gardens to the south, agricultural land to the east and Thoresby Colliery with associated spoil heaps and lagoons immediately to the northeast. Nottinghamshire County Council Sherwood Living Legend Geo-environmental Desk Study Report Page 2-2 2.4 Historical Development 2.4.1 Table 2 below provides a summary of the historical development of the site and has been prepared with reference to historical maps contained within the Envirocheck report, contained in Appendix A. 2.4.2 On the 1st edition map (1887) the site is shown to be mainly open fields with a small building, possibly a residential dwelling, with formal garden in the south of the site, tracks (later shown as Allotment Gardens) and occasional deciduous trees. The site remains generally unchanged on all subsequent mapping. The last available mapping to show the building in the south of the site is dated 1969. The 1989 edition shows the site as two fields as per the present layout. 2.4.3 The areas to the north and west are shown as woodland (both deciduous and mixed) and heath, Edwinstowe village is to the south, the land to the east was agricultural until Thoresby Colliery opened prior to 1938.
