Rock the Blues Away
ROCK THESE BLUES AWAY. The Recordings of John Lee Hooker since 1981 ROCK THESE BLUES AWAY The Recordings Of John Lee Hooker Since 1981 By Gary Hearn (Feb. 2006) Introduction In 1992 Les Fancout’s sessionography of John Lee Hooker – “Boogie Chillen” – was published in booklet form by Blues & Rhythm magazine (ed. Tony Burke). This pamphlet is intended to update Les’ work with all the known Hooker sessions since 1981. Though details on other, earlier, sessions have come to light through recent releases, I have excluded them from the scope of my research and it is left to others to publish those corrections and additions elsewhere. The recordings listed here come from the final phase of John’s career during what is known as the Rosebud era, the name of his management company. To my imperfect mind, the best – and darkest – of them found release on the “Boom Boom” album put out by Pointblank in 1993. This was also a period when blues artists were called upon to provide benevolent cameos to artists better known in the mainstream. John took part in many such sessions with varying degrees of success; whatever the finished product, his contributions were immediately recognisable. The compact discs in this survey are, as far as I can tell, the first UK issue shown listed in order of catalogue number for ease of cross-reference to the sessionography. Because record companies re-issue, re-package and licence their recordings, subsequent issues are not considered. None of the cd-singles listed are still available and are shown merely in evidence of the penetration of the “John Lee Hooker” brand. -

Boogie Chillen'
“Boogie Chillen’”—John Lee Hooker (1948) Added to the National Registry: 2008 Essay by Jas Obrecht (guest post)* John Lee Hooker Original label From more than a half-century, John Lee Hooker reigned as the blues’ foremost boogieman and one of the genre’s most idiosyncratic performers. While he recorded more than a hundred albums with some of the finest blues and rock musicians, the heartbeat of his music was always his mesmerizing voice, propulsive guitar playing, and rhythm-driving foot taps. Like Lightnin’ Hopkins, Muddy Waters, and precious few others, Hooker was a musical law unto himself and a direct link to early blues. As Keith Richards observed after playing some sessions with Hooker, “With John Lee, there’s a break in the continuity of styles. What he picked up has got to come from one generation further back than anybody else, and John Lee can still make it work.” Nowhere is this more evident than on Hooker’s breakthrough 1948 single “Boogie Chillen.” When Hooker recorded the song, he was 31 years old and had recently moved to Detroit, Michigan. Accompanying himself with an acoustic guitar outfitted with a sound-hole pickup and tuned to an open-A chord, he framed most of the song’s repetitive, hypnotic feel with a one-chord riff that seemed equal parts West African music and Mississippi blues. Hooker had tested the song at house parties before he recorded it. “That was done at the old United Sound Systems there in Detroit,” he recalled. “They put a ply board under your feet, and your feet would just tap it. -
“Head Hunters”—Herbie Hancock (1973) Added to the National Registry: 2007 Essay by Bob Gluck (Guest Post) *
“Head Hunters”—Herbie Hancock (1973) Added to the National Registry: 2007 Essay by Bob Gluck (guest post) * Original album Original label Herbie Hancock Herbie Hancock’s “Head Hunters” charted a new course for a musician who had come to see the entire world as his potential audience. In crafting this recording, Hancock renewed an historic idea while furthering something novel: jazz that audiences could dance to. Not since the big band era had jazz quite so successfully reached out a broad net, merging music for attentive listening with an approach that gave everybody something to hold onto. This had been the goal of late 1950’s and early 60’s “hard bop.” That music, made famous by drummer Art Blakey and pianist Horace Silver, injected widely beloved African American musical styles— gospel and the Blues—into modern jazz. By softening bebop’s blazing fast angularity, hard boppers crafted a more accessible, finger snapping, more populist style. In fact, this was the music Herbie Hancock first played as he began his professional career at the beginning of the 1960s with Donald Byrd’s band and on his own early recordings. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Hancock’s mentor, Miles Davis, began to update this concept of bridging popular Black music—R&B and funk--with jazz. Yet it was Hancock’s “Head Hunters” that most successfully reached the younger generation with this new synthesis. Hancock first gained the attention of a wider public when his 1962 hard bop tune “Watermelon Man” became, in the hands of Mongo Santamaria, a Latin dance craze. -
