They want pizzaz. They want something new. They want Robert Griffin III or Russell Wilson. They want Tom Brady to have a game where he throws 4 touchdowns and pumps his fist to signify that he is ready for the playoffs. They want Big Ben Roethlisberger to evade the sack, dance around the pocket and throw a 40 yard touchdown pass to a streaking Antonio Brown. I’ll just take Tony Romo. Tony Romo is not the best fantasy quarterback nor the worst one. He’s consistent, solid and does what he needs to do. In 2012, he was the 8th best fantasy quarterback. In 2013, he had 284 points, ranking him as the 9th best fantasy quarterback. RG3, Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson all ended with less points but because they threw gamewinning touchdowns or made ridiculous juke moves to throw off the tackler, they were all drafted higher than Mr. Romo. Tony Romo’s average draft position this fantasy season was 80.7 as the 12th quarterback. This is behind the rookie wonders and even Colin Kaepernick who didn’t even start at the beginning of last season. So far this season, Romo has averaged about 17 points a game which goes hand in hand with Matthew Berry’s draft day manifesto. The Talented Mr Roto stated that to win your average fantasy matchup, you will need to have a team that combine to 94 points. As you can see from the chart, 17 points is the perfect target for your starting quarterback weektoweek, making Romo a solid choice for your starter. Now, you may be asking, why wouldn’t I just draft a quarterback with a score higher than 17 consistently such as Manning, Brees or Ryan? The simple answer is that you have to get running backs or wide receivers early. Let’s look at my Dallas Stinks league as an example. Brees, Rodgers, Brady and Newton were all drafted between rounds 2 and 4 while Romo slipped to the 12th as everyone had a QB by Round 8(we’re not counting Manning because he might be having the best fantasy season of all time). If you had picked a QB in Rounds 24, you wouldn;t have had the chance to pick star RBs or WRs such as Matt Forte, Julio Jones, Frank Gore or AJ Green. However, if you had waited for a QB, such as Romo, in the 10th12th, you would have been able to pick up one of these studs. Fantasy football is a game of luck. We all know this. Decimal points can decide games and an interception that has no bearing on the game can be the deciding factor between you and winning the championship. However, try to get as the best opportunity to win by getting the most solid players such as Romo and proven RB/WR commodities in the first few rounds. pigskin.psych.indiana.edu/?p=4011 1/2 10/29/13 Tony Romo Is Good At Football « Prediction, Probability, and Pigskin October 1st, 2013 | Edit this post pigskin.psych.indiana.edu/?p=4011 2/2.
