Thank you. Thank you. ii Abstract While Tarot cards are widely known as a fortune-telling tool, the practice of reading Tarot can also be understood as a spiritual practice. Tarot cards have undergone significant reinterpretations since their origins as a secular parlour game in the fifteenth century. Largely due to the influence of occult and alchemical thinkers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, today Tarot has emerged as a mystical tool for divination, enlightenment, and spiritual self-help. This study seeks to understand the religious dimensions of Tarot for Tarot readers. Drawing upon the five dimensions of religiosity model developed by Rodney Stark and Charles Glock, this thesis reveals the inherent religiosity of Tarot reading for practitioners. However, this thesis also reveals the need for a more nuanced model of religion than that offered by Stark and Glock. The thesis argues that while the Stark and Glock model of religiosity can help reveal some of the spiritual dimensions of Tarot practice, its institutional bias fails to account for other important spiritual dimensions of Tarot religiosity. iii Table of Contents ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ................................................................................................. Ph.D. Introduction Nichole Yalsovac Prophetic revelation, or Divination, dates back to the earliest known times of human existence. The oldest of all Chinese texts, the I Ching, is a divination system older than recorded history. James Legge says in his translation of I Ching: Book Of Changes (1996), “The desire to seek answers and to predict the future is as old as civilization itself.” Mankind has always had a desire to know what the future holds. Evidence shows that methods of divination, also known as fortune telling, were used by the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians and the Sumerians (who resided in what is now Iraq) as early as six‐thousand years ago. Divination was originally a device of royalty and has often been an essential part of religion and medicine. Significant leaders and royalty often employed priests, doctors, soothsayers and astrologers as advisers and consultants on what the future held. Every civilization has held a belief in at least some type of divination. The point of divination in the ancient world was to ascertain the will of the gods. In fact, divination is so called because it is assumed to be a gift of the divine, a gift from the gods. This gift of obtaining knowledge of the unknown uses a wide range of tools and an enormous variety of techniques, as we will see in this course. No matter which method is used, the most imperative aspect is the interpretation and presentation of what is seen.

In Ugaritic texts dated to 1200 BC, she is The Great Lady Athirat in the Canaanite pantheon, thought to be the mother of all gods.

    Caezarette used a seven card divination method designed to reflect a sailing ship. 1. The Captain. Use the Querent Cypher card. This card is the one that the diviner should tune into most carefully, for it serves as the symbol that any person or question can become. It is in the center. 2. The Deck Below. What supports you and saves your life? 3. The Sails Above. What propels you, where your decisions and drives meet? 4. The Stern. What lies behind you that steers your course? 5. The Prow. What lies before you in near waters? 6. The Rocks. What dangers lurk on the course ahead? 7. The Sky. What weather surrounds your voyage? 8. Port. What will you find at your next destination? If you do not have a deck, you can roll percentile to determine what card is next in the draw. If you get a duplicate, skip to the next available card. Roll a third distinct die with a 50% chance for the card to be “inverted.” Inverted meanings (if the card is upside-down) are italicized on the card entries. Positions 2-3 in this style cannot be inverted. Cypher 00 The master key to the deck, this card represents the object or person in question. The reading will revolve around the energy the diviner can invest in the cypher card. It carries meaning for all things, and nothing. Grail 01 Truth and life are twined and powerful, overcoming deception and death. Not only does this meaning stand in place in the reading, the Grail validates the entire reading more strongly and can indicate a powerful supernatural force communicating to the one requesting the reading’s insight.

The sites through which the extraterrestrial appears -- spiritualism, so-called “space brother” religions, unidentified flying objects, and alien abduction -- are understood as elements of an ongoing displaced utopian imaginary. This mode of utopian thought is characterized by recourse to figures of radical alterity (spirits of the dead, “ascended masters,” and the gray) as agents of radical social change; by its homologies with contemporaneous political currents; and through its invocation of trance states for counsel from the various others imagined as primary agents of change. Ultimately, the dissertation argues that the extraterrestrial functions as the locus both for the resolution of tensions between the spiritual and the material and for the projection of a perfected subject into a utopian future. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS I.
