You can hate me but what do I care Everything from the tattoo on my wrist to the color of my hair You created like a seed in the ground You water me down with anorexic superheroes and prozac popping clowns. I've already slept with the captain of the football team, it was lame I've already kissed a girl on ecstasy; it's all the same And I already forgive you mom and dad, how could you know anyway. I'm graduating, too late for saving I'm celebrating the beauty of the naked truth A life complicated, sometimes I hate it You're not me and I'm not you It's the beauty of, the beauty of the naked truth. Fail me, but I won't flunk out Lecture me about true love and monogamy First, maybe you should figure that out I'm the daughter of a self-indulgent man And a mother who mastered the art of apology That psychology is all that I am. I've already prayed the rosary over my best friend's suicide I already know what it feels like to have a part of me die And I already forgive you mom and dad cause I'm still alive. I'm graduating, too late for saving I'm celebrating the beauty of the naked truth A life complicated, sometimes I hate it You're not me and I'm not you It's the beauty of, the beauty of the naked truth. I wear my flaws like a badge of honor If I use my claws then baby you're a goner If you're uncomfortable with being exposed Then join the others who will never know. I'm graduating, too late for saving I'm celebrating the beauty of the naked truth A life complicated, sometimes I hate it You're not me and I'm not you It's the beauty of; it's the beauty of the naked truth It's the beauty of the naked truth, it's true. Naked Truth. Sarah Hudson made her debut on a national stage in the spring of 2004 on an episode of PBS' Frontline that focused on the trials of the modern- day music industry. Her story was paired with that of Velvet Revolver, a supergroup pairing of Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots and former Guns n' Roses members Slash and Duff, with the intent of positioning her as the struggling young in comparison to the veteran rockers (the punch line was, in the pop culture climate of 2004, both were struggling to be heard). As the show revealed, Hudson's story wasn't quite as simple as that. Her father is Mark Hudson, who was part of the '70s teen idol stars the Hudson Brothers, and her cousin is Academy Award- nominated actress Kate Hudson, so it wasn't like Sarah was without connections. But, as the show pointed out, she had a good voice and, at least from the clips of the yet-to-be-released record that were played, she could either craft or deliver a good pop hook. Despite this good exposure, her debut album, Naked Truth, wasn't ready to hit the stores that spring, and a whole summer passed before it was released in early September. The reason for the delay could be found in Frontline -- given the popularity of post-teen pop singers like Avril Lavigne, her record company, S- Curve/EMI, wanted to be sure it had a polished, professional album that it could market. So, Hudson worked with several teams of and producers -- notably Desmond Child and Billy Mann, but several other professionals, including her dad on one cut -- with the intent of getting Naked Truth just right. Unfortunately, the end result is overcooked and overcalculated, heavily polished and heavily tailored to appeal to the Avril audience. Though they didn't produce a single cut, there are Matrix signatures all over the place -- the clunky beats, the megaphone call-n- response -- and the subject matter is defiantly adolescent, with plenty of songs about being "Strange" or being a "Girl on the Verge" of a nervous breakdown, and they all recall Avril's debut, Let Go. These songs are pretty hooky, and they wouldn't be bad if they didn't seem quite so calculated, as if they're trying to shoehorn a girl with genuine talent into a prefab package. Hudson has potential, but her collaborators have chosen not to make her sound more adult, but more like a teenager. So, there are lyrics like "I wanna find peace like Mahatma Gandhi/Wanna drink champagne and be cool like Blondie" delivered in a singsong fashion, and plenty of lyrics about "having stupid suicidal thoughts" or complaints about her parents that are undercut by her dedication of the album to her mother and father "for being so beautifully brave and inspiring me every single day" (which doesn't seem technically wrong, come to think of it). These sentiments, which could resonate with a teenage audience if they didn't seem quite so polished, undercut an album that otherwise has hooks and spunk, an album that suggests Sarah Hudson, if she weren't being run through the pop machine as documented on Frontline, has the potential to be an interesting pop singer/songwriter. But on Naked Truth, she wasn't given the room to just be herself and let the chips fall where they may, with no regard to the charts. Hopefully, her next record won't be given as much attention, since she'd benefit from not being thrust into the spotlight. Naked Truth.
