Compassion and courage Australian doctors and dentists in the Great War Medical History Museum, University of Melbourne War has long brought about great change and discovery in medicine and dentistry, due mainly to necessity and the urgency and severity of the injuries, disease and other hardships confronting patients and practitioners. Much of this innovation has taken place in the field, in makeshift hospitals, under conditions of poor Compassion hygiene and with inadequate equipment and supplies. During World War I, servicemen lived in appalling conditions in the trenches and were and subjected to the effects of horrific new weapons courage such as mustard gas. It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography. -

THE EAST INDIA CLUB SOME ACCOUNT OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE CLUB & STAFF WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR ONE 1914-1919 & WORLD WAR TWO 1939-1945 THE NAMES LISTED ON THE CLUB MEMORIALS IN THE HALL DEDICATION The independent ambition of both Chairman Iain Wolsey and member David Keating to research the members and staff honoured on the Club’s memorials has resulted in this book of Remembrance. Mr Keating’s immense capacity for the necessary research along with the Chairman’s endorsement and encouragement for the project was realised through the generosity of member Nicholas and Lynne Gould. The book was received in to the Club on the occasion of a commemorative service at St James’s Church, Piccadilly in September 2014 to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Second World War members were researched and added in 2016 along with the appendices, which highlights some of the episodes and influences that involved our members in both conflicts. In October 2016, along with over 190 other organisations representing clubs, livery companies and the military, the club contributed a flagstone of our crest to the gardens of remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. First published in 2014 by the East India Club. THE WAR MEMORIAL OF THE FACULTY OF ADVOCATES 1914-1918 ALASTAIR K SHEPHERD WS 1 INTRODUCTION In 1914 the young – and not so young – men of Scotland joined the military in droves, and the Advocates were no exception. For many of them, part time military service had been a significant part of their leisure time; indeed the vast majority of the men in this publication had served in uniform before 1914. Some of them, like Robert Burns Begg KC, or Archibald Jones, had served in the Boer War. Others, like Jim Henderson-Hamilton, had joined a local territorial battalion, possibly for social or work reasons as much as military ones. The average age of the Advocates who were killed in the war was well over the national average, at 37. Some were positive veterans, like James Ferguson, Senior, at 60, although he did not actually die on active service. However the 56 year old James Clark was killed leading his men in a charge. At the other end of the spectrum were young men like 24 year old George Buchanan Smith. In the Nineteenth Century, many Advocates had been sons of landed gentry, and certainly many on the war memorial fit that description. However, the occupations of their fathers were, by 1914, more varied; salvage engineers, rubber manufacturers, and shipbuilders rub shoulders with coconut plantation owners and thread manufacturers. Many came from legal backgrounds; indeed eight of the twenty two had Advocates, Writers to the Signet, and Sheriffs as fathers. All were well educated, some in traditional Scottish High schools, others in Scottish or English private schools. -

It then comprised the: · South Western Area (Cornwall, Devon and Somerset); · Southern Area (Hampshire & Dorset); · Salisbury Plain Area (Wiltshire) · South Midland Area (Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire). In the 1920’s the South Western Area and Southern Area were merged to form the Wessex Area, and Wiltshire was transferred from the Salisbury Plain Area only later to be transferred back. The Headquarters of Southern Command were historically based in Portsmouth, but in 1901, they moved to Salisbury Plain. The Headquarters were located in what is now Lucknow Barracks in Tidworth, which opened in 1905. When the Command was reorganised following the Great War, it appears the Headquarters were moved into the city of Salisbury. -
