T The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort reflects coastal life and interprets lighthouses and lifesaving stations, the seafood industry, motorboats, and more. Studies in marine life, science, and ecology are available for all ages. The Beaufort museum is the repository for artifacts from Blackbeard’s wrecked flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, among them cannons, grenades, belt buckles and beads. The Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center teaches boatbuilding for all ages. The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort is open Monday thru Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Free admission to the public. Donations appreciated. The North Carolina Maritime Museums are part of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. In addition to the N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort, the other two maritime museums include The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras and the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport. The three North Carolina Maritime Museums preserve and interpret North Carolina’s coastal life and history. They paint a picture of the maritime and coastal culture including fishermen, boat builders, decoy carvers and more. They present exhibits of painters and pirates, shipwrecks and sailboats, and about marine life and protection. We encourage you to “Like” us on Facebook to stay current with our events programs. Participants will learn about species of whales that can be found in our coastal waters, how some of these whales were hunted throughout the Atlantic and elsewhere and where some of their skeletal remains have ended up. North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort 3 Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge Tercentennial Program A series of monthly lectures take place from November 2017 through November 2018. With the exception of the first lecture on November 4, 2017, the lecture series will be held on the second Saturday of each month, beginning promptly at 2:00 p.m. The Origin and Early Career of Blackbeard November 4, 2 p.m. Who was Blackbeard and how did he become a pirate? Nautical Archeologist David Moore will explain the story behind the rise of Blackbeard. Free Admission. No advance registration. Walk-ins welcome. Blackbeard Celebrates the Holidays December 9, 2 p.m. A life at sea marauding and terrorizing doesn’t mean pirates did not enjoy the holidays. Learn about this interesting look at pirate customs from Historic Interpreter Christine Brin. This is part of a series of monthly lectures running from November 2017 through November 2018. Conservation Wednesdays: Blackbeard's Ship, Queen Anne’s Revenge March 1 – December 27, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Have you ever wondered what happens to the artifacts from the Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge once they are recovered from the bottom of the ocean? The North Carolina Maritime Museum will host a conservator from the Queen Anne’s Revenge conservation lab in Greenville from 10 a.m. to Noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Conservators will be available every Wednesday to answer questions about the processes required to conserve the thousands of artifacts that have been recovered from the Queen Anne’s Revenge site. North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort 4 2017 Brown Bag Gams The popular Brown Bag Gams are popular with visitors and locals alike. Bring a brown bag lunch and learn about North Carolina’s rich coastal environment and culture at these informal lectures. The presentations occur between Noon and 1 p.m. So what is a Gam? gam; n. 1- a school of whales 2- a social visit or friendly conversation, esp. between whalers v. - to visit, esp. while at sea. Brown Bag Gam: From Lightships to Light Towers January 5, Noon Pack a lunch for the Brown Bag Gam during your lunch hour and join Associate Curator Benjamin Wunderly for a talk about lightships and light towers. Shortly after the construction of several coastal lighthouses in North Carolina it was apparent that some locations would require additional warning lights. The dangerous shoals of Diamond, Lookout and Frying Pan proved difficult to navigate for many seafaring captains. Learn about the early attempts to mark these treacherous waters and what has happened to the latest towers. Brown Bag Gam: North Carolina Dolphins January 30, Noon Pack a lunch for the Brown Bag Gam during your lunch hour and join Museum Natural Science Curator Keith Rittmaster for an informal discussion about the biology, behavior, and conservation issues affecting the North Carolina Dolphins. Bottlenose dolphins occur in Beaufort year-round but they’re not the same individuals and we’re learning a lot from photo-ID and stranding response. For thousands of years’ men and women have found love at sea. During this program Christine Brin, Museum Educator, will be sharing some memorable stories of Love at Sea to celebrate Valentine’s Day. These stories will include the legend that inspired the 1972 hit song “Brandi” and the tragic love stories of two special couples resting in Beaufort’s Old Burying Ground. Free Admission. Brown Bag Gam: Historic Oyster Fishery of North Carolina February 22, Noon Unlock the mystery of this amazing bi-valve. Participants will learn about the importance of the oyster, the history of harvesting them in North Carolina and what researchers and conservationists are doing today with Crassostrea virginica, the Eastern Oyster.
