SUNDAY 27th SEPTEMBER Bond University

12:00pm - QAFLW Dev. League 2:00pm - QAFLW Coorparoo Kings Coolangatta Blue Birds v v Yeronga Sth Brisbane Devils Yeronga Sth Brisbane Devils On behalf of AFL Queensland I would like to welcome everyone to the 2020 Bond University QAFLW Grand Final Day, featuring the Bond University QAFLW and Development League Grand Finals. We are delighted to be able to present today’s Grand Finals together with our proud partners, Bond University, in what has been an unprecedented year for our sport and our industry as a whole.

Queensland has played a significant role in keeping AFL alive in 2020, and we have been rewarded with the opportunity to host the 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final at the ‘Gabba on October 24th.

2020 has been a year like no other, and what our Community Clubs have achieved this year is nothing short of amazing. Every club and player took the new COVID-19 regulations in their stride and persevered throughout the season. It has been absolutely fantastic to see such a high level of football being played out across all of our Community competitions in their respective shortened seasons, and I know today’s Grand Finals will take it to another level!

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many aspects of our operations have had to be flexible and agile in their delivery, and none greater than our prestigious awards night that was to celebrate the Bond University QAFLW Best and Fairest Awards, which unfortunately had to be cancelled. We were delighted to announce during the week that Jordan Zanchetta (Yeronga Sth Brisbane), Isabel Dawes (Maroochydore) and Taylor Smith (Bond University) were jointly crowned the Leagues Best and Fairest. Congratulations also to Cathy Svarc (Wilston Grange) who was awarded the Bond University QAFLW MVP, as voted by the QAFLW Senior Coaches.

I would like to sincerely thank the many passionate, dedicated and hardworking volunteers and administrators at our QAFLW clubs for everything they continue to do for our great game. I would also like to congratulate the umpires selected to officiate today's Grand Finals, as well as thanking all umpires who officiated throughout the 2020 season.

Best of luck to everyone competing today!

DEAN WARREN AFL Queensland CEO This year Bond University extended their commitment to female football in Queensland, as naming rights partner and major sponsor of the QAFLW.

The exceptional growth we are continuing to experience across female participation in Queensland wouldn’t be possible without the passion and generosity of partners like Bond University.

Our continued vision for AFL in Queensland to be the most progressive and accessible team sport in the state, and this is even more paramount now than ever before. If it were not for partners like Bond University investing in the provision of pathways for female participants, we would not be able to achieve our goals as successfully year on year.

We thank Bond University for their ongoing support of the QAFLW competition and look forward to working closely with them as we continue to enhance female footy in Queensland.

Third Scorer: Tania Smiley Today in the Bond University QAFLW Development League, the Coorparoo Kings take on the Yeronga South Brisbane Devils in what is shaping up to be a match up for the ages. Last time these two teams met, it was a stalemate with neither team taking home the 4 points. It’s likely this game will be just as close.

Both teams disposed of their opponents in emphatic fashion in the Preliminary Finals and looked dangerous when in possession of the ball. This top of the table clash promises to be a high scoring affair, with the Kings looking to go one better than last year when they narrowly lost to Bond University in what was easily the match of the day. Yeronga on the other hand has gone from cellar dwellers in 2019 to playing for the Premiership Cup.

Both teams come with plenty of experience, including a number of QAFLW or ex- QAFLW players expected to line up. Coorparoo stalwart Sally Young provides plenty of experience and leadership for a team that has had no problem kicking goals this year. Last week, Coorparoo produced eight different goal kickers, which makes them difficult to contain defensively.

Similarly, Yeronga produced seven different goal kickers last week, however Adrienne Keeffe and Natalie Thomas bagged 5 and 4 goals respectively. Keeffe has kicked 12 goals in her last two outings and will need to be in similar form if Yeronga want to take home the trophy against a strong Coorparoo outfit. Thomas’ experience will guide the new look Devils team in what promises to be a scoring bonanza.

Jury is out on who is going to take home the silverware today, but it is guaranteed to be an absolutely cracking match between the best two teams of the season. 3 Sally Young 1 Kayla Milne 4 Megan Boscoe 2 Samantha Hopkin Y E 6 Ariana Reilly 3 Adrienne Keeffe R 10 Whitney Howson 6 Jamie Howell O 11 Melanie Sweeney 7 Nicole O'Loughlin N s 17 Adair Henderson 8 Abigail Ashford G g 19 Jessica McLean 9 Lily Bougoure A

COACH: COACH: DANIEL ARKLAY IAN DANIELS Today's marquee match will be in the Bond University QAFLW decider between the Coolangatta Bluebirds and Yeronga Devils shapes as a classic contest. The Bluebirds enjoyed a week off in the first week of finals, before accounting for Maroochydore in last week’s Preliminary Final. Meanwhile, the Devils have done it the hard way, albeit quite impressively, by conquering last year’s premier, Coorparoo, in week 1 and then upsetting this year’s minor premier, Bond Uni, in last Saturday’s qualifier.

It’s fair to say the Devils have peaked when it matters most and they will be hoping the leadership two of the AFLW’s most experienced players, Lauren Arnell and , will keep their team mates focussed on the job at hand. But it won’t be easy. The Bluebirds, under the watchful eye of experienced coach, Nicole Graves, have somewhat flown under the radar this season, but have been a model of consistency and the results speak for themselves.

Yeronga’s Jordan Zanchetta has had an outstanding season in the midfield, highlighted by winning her second QAFLW Best & Fairest this week. She will be pivotal to the Devil’s chances with first use out of the middle. However, the ball magnet won’t have it easy with the likes of seasoned AFLW players and Kate Surman knowing how to get their hands on the footy around the stoppages for the Bluebirds.

A key matchup could be between two wily veterans and AFLW teammates, Leah Kaslar and Jade Pregelj. Kaslar can play as a key forward or an attacking defender for Coolangatta. If she goes forward it can almost be guaranteed Pregelj gets the match up. Both attack the footy at pace without fear. If this match-up occurs it will be worth the price of admission alone.

Who wins? Yeronga have been hot and cold all season, but right now they are white hot. So there’s strong claims for momentum to carry them to another title. But having a system that holds up week in week out is what Coolangatta pride themselves on and that will no doubt hold them in good stead in front of an expected big crowd. So again, who wins? It’s a flip of the coin! Overtime to decide the winner isn’t out of the question either. Regardless, the one thing that can be guaranteed is that the game will further showcase the plethora of female talent Queensland continues to produce. Y S 1 Paige Parker 1 Emily Bates E R
