Dubai Business Associates Alumni Newsletter Web Edition DBA behind the scenes at the DP World ‘Race to Dubai’ golf championship, November 2018 Debut edition 4Q/2018 DBA Alumni Newsletter 4Q/2018 A Message from the Director of Dubai Business Associates, James Maughan It is my pleasure to present the debut edition of the Dubai Business Associates Alumni Newsletter! This is the programme’s fifth year, and we began the year with a new name: Dubai Business Associates. While you may be a DBI graduate, we will use the term DBA moving forward to encompass all programme alumni. The DBA programme has many strengths, especially our incredible alumni network, with whom we are delighted to remain so well connected. During a recent conversation with the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they expressed how impressed they are by the alumni list, a confirmation of the impact and power of having you as our ambassadors. We hope you tell your story of your time in Dubai and the UAE wherever you are, consciously and unconsciously – at work, when traveling, to friends and family and colleagues. Following the newsletter, we are sharing the alumni list with you. This is a very useful networking tool, and we encourage you to connect with one another and keep in touch, by WeChat or however! We stay connected with you in order to learn of your achievements and successes, to connect you with opportunities and ideas, and to offer support whenever needed. After graduation the programme may come to an end, but our community remains, and we greatly value your contributions. There is a Latin saying, “All roads lead to Rome.” This should be updated to Dubai. May we meet soon. Yours sincerely, James Maughan 1 DBA Alumni Newsletter 4Q/2018 Table of Contents Alumni Whereabouts…………………………………………………………………………………………3 DBA Alumni Reunions……………………………………………………………………………………….4 Recognition of DBA’s Recruitment Partners…………………………………………….………….6 Year 5 Recruitment…………………………………………………………………….……………..………8 Alumni Updates: Projects & Roles……………………………………………………………………...12 Year 5 Associate Placement Map………………………………………………………………………..17 An Ode to Erin…………………………………………………………………………………………………...18 2 DBA Alumni Newsletter 4Q/2018 Alumni Whereabouts Including the year 4 graduates, there are 114 DBA alumni residing in 14 countries/35 cities around the world: China: Beijing, Guangdong, Hainan, Hong Kong, Hangzhou, Hunan Province, Qingdao, Shanghai, Shenzhen France: Annecy, Paris, Rennes Germany: Bonn, Munich, Bremen, Berlin Kazakhstan: Almaty, Astana Kenya: Nairobi Netherlands: Arnhem New Zealand: Auckland Northern Ireland: Ballymena Russia: Moscow, Saint Petersburg Singapore Switzerland: Geneva UAE: Dubai UK: Cambridge, London USA: Chicago, Elkridge, Madison, Minnesota, New Jersey, San Francisco, Washington DC We encourage you to reach out to your fellow alumni if you are visiting or moving to any of the cities above. Hang Guo at the Shenzhen Foundation (SFIEC): In his role at the Shenzhen Foundation, Hang [Y1] co-created City Plus, an initiative to facilitate intercity exchange and communication between Shenzhen and its 85 friendship cities. City Plus 2.0 will launch in 2019, focused on helping expats live more like locals in Shenzhen, through suggested walking routes created by the City Plus team, where expats will be exposed to both hidden gems and well-known highlights. Each with its own theme, the walking routes will also have tasks that can be completed to unlock a hidden element or treasure, containing knowledge and historical information about Shenzhen. Hang explained that the online walking routes can be the vivid books expats "read" by experiencing the city, and also a social occasion where they meet people who share their interests, helping to create a sense of belonging for the expats so that one day they may call Shenzhen home. This initiative is part of an effort to make Shenzhen the most inclusive city in the world. City Plus 2.0 also aims to collate information about Shenzhen’s friendship cities and showcase the information, to create better links between them and Shenzhen. Hang identified a lack of momentum following the initial friendship agreement, and hopes to bridge the gap by providing 12 DBA Alumni Newsletter 4Q/2018 a platform where the cities can “socialise” with each other and exchange information, allowing them to grow together through collaboration. By coining the term “intercity socialisation” to define their model, they hope to have cities promoting themselves offline in Shenzhen as well. Yanming Wen (Ming) [Y1] at Youreka Technology: Wen Yang Ming (Ming), Y1 alumni, is co-founder and CEO of Youreka Technology, an innovative patent development and patent productization company in Shenzhen, China. After graduating from the DBI programme, Ming finished her Master’s Degree in Chinese Business Law, then worked as a teenager-maker tutor and product manager in Shenzhen for one year. She writes, I studied law for more than 7 years, but I was not interested in pursuing my career in law. I am a big fan of science and technology innovation and inventing. I chose Intellectual Property as my major in college since I considered it could protect innovations. For interests, I also minored in Computer Science and Engineering. Though I was not a specialized science and engineering student, I have more than ten years of experience inventing patents. 13 DBA Alumni Newsletter 4Q/2018 During my first year in Shenzhen, I was so glad that I had the opportunity to join a maker education startup and worked as a teenager maker tutor and intelligent hardware product manager. I made many interesting intellectual items such as unmanned aerial vehicle, interactive robots, smart home system, 3D printing model, etc. As time went by, I came up with more and more innovative ideas and I had a burning desire to bring these ideas into reality to change people’s lives rather than having them remain in a laboratory. I made up my mind to start my own company, focusing on innovative patent development and patent productization. I like the story of when Aristotle discovered buoyancy force - he blurted out the word “Eureka!”, so I named the company “Youreka Technology”, as a constant reminder of the joy of discovery and innovation. Youreka Technology successfully passed the expert team examination and was admitted as an incubating enterprise to the Maker College of Chinese Academy of Sciences in April 2018. The company’s goal is to change unreasonable status quo, bring convenience to people's lives and improve their happiness by providing innovative technologies and solutions: to change the world through grounded technology”. Youreka’s first productization patent “None-Pipe Ultrasonic Self-Cleaning Range Hood” recently won the second prize in Shenzhen College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and RMB300,000 of government funding support, and more patented products are coming soon.
