The University of Edinburgh has been a constant in our complex, fast-changing world for more than 400 years. The global society faces significant challenges but we’re confident education will play a vital role solving those problems and we relish our shared responsibility to respond to them.

It’s something our community has always done. Together, we’ve expanded the depth of human knowledge and improved the lives of ordinary people. Research conducted here led to the discovery of chloroform anaesthesia, the Higgs boson particle and in-vitro fertilisation. Our academics, students and alumni discovered carbon dioxide, led the Scottish Enlightenment laying the foundations of contemporary thought, developed a genetically engineered vaccine against Hepatitis B, and identified the SARS Coronavirus. We have long enjoyed a spirit of innovation and collaboration and continue to do so today. We are proudly open to everyone, bringing people with new outlooks and perspectives together in an international community that is establishing the data capital of Europe, tackling climate change and paving the way for new fertility treatments. Our scientists are seeking cures for cancer, repurposing drugs to improve treatments for the Covid-19 Coronavirus and contributing to the global search for a vaccine. Together, we are open to the world today so we can influence the world tomorrow. 04 www.ed.ac.uk/postgraduate Postgraduate Guide 2021 The University of Edinburgh 05 The Edinburgh experience Global

Scotland’s inspiring capital will be calendar and a rich history. Edinburgh is home the stimulating backdrop to your studies. It is to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites and was the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. one of Europe’s great cultural hubs, boasting an irresistible blend of history, natural beauty Edinburgh’s location is perfect for adventurers and modern city life. – there are few other places in the world with such diverse and readily accessible opportunities, from snowboarding to surfing. Scotland’s natural beauty is as little as a walk or bike ride away from the city limits – from the Pentland Hills to the south to the coastline along the Firth of Forth to the north. Scotland offers one of the longest coastlines for a country of our size, so a visit to one of the city's beaches is highly recommended. A single day in Edinburgh could see you “Edinburgh is one of Europe’s hillwalking in the morning, lazing on the beach in the afternoon, and enjoying the treasures most beautiful cities, draped of the medieval lanes and Michelin-starred across a series of rocky hills restaurants by night. overlooking the sea.”

Lonely Planet

“Edinburgh has that perfect balance between the amenities of a capital city and the charm of a small town.”

Caroline Stevens, USA MA (Hons) Sociology with Quantitative Methods 38 www.ed.ac.uk Postgraduate Guide 2021 The University of Edinburgh 39

In the summer months the pace of city life usually accelerates as Edinburgh’s world-famous annual festivals get under way. The city usually hosts 30 festivals each year, attracting almost four million visitors. Many of these feature venues on campus or near to the University. Although the impact of the Covid-19 Coronavirus led to the cancellation of the festivals in 2020, we remain hopeful of seeing Edinburgh's festivals reinstated in future years.

Edinburgh’s festivals include: International Science Festival International Film Festival Jazz and Blues Festival International Festival and Festival Fringe Art Festival The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo International Book Festival Edinburgh Mela Edinburgh’s Hogmanay

“My horizons have been broadened by my experience at Edinburgh. Classmates come from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and I enjoy learning with them.”

The UK formally left the European Union (EU) on 31st January 2020. UK and Scottish Governments have confirmed that most non-UK EU students commencing study in 2021/22 will no longer be treated as 'home' students in relation to fee status or access to funding. Final fee regulations are not yet available but are expected to clarify fee status for those with settled status and for Irish citizens (under the Common Travel Agreement).
