There is more from graduation day on pages 3-5. We wish all our graduates the very best for the future. We bid farewell to Dr Richard Todd, who has taught at IMES since 2006. Richard was a key colleague in the MA Arabic degree, and has contributed to countless other aspects of IMES life. We wish him the very best for his new post at the University of Birmingham. Memories of Richard at IMES can be found on page 17. Elsewhere, there are the regular features about IMES events, as well as articles on NGO work in Beirut, on the SkatePal charity, poems to Syria, on recent workshops on masculinities and on Arab Jews, and memories of Arabic at Edinburgh in the late 1960s and early 1970s from Professor Miriam Cooke (MA Arabic 1971). Verhoeven Leuven, 1996 2 POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH TRAINING IN BELGIUM I. Beuselinck J.C. Verhoeven Postgraduate research training in Belgium is a rather recent phenomenon. Like in many West-European countries until the 1970s more attention was paid to the expansion of the universities. New universities were created in the 1960s and 1970s in order to give more youngsters the opportunity to enjoy a university education, a policy which was accompanied with more financial support for the existing universities and the expansion of scholarships for not wealthy but capable students. This development was not free from problems. Belgium is a divided country with three important cleavages which had in those years an important influence on political decisions. First, there is the religious cleavage: the split between the Roman Catholics and the anticlericals. Second, the cleavage between working classes and the propertied classes. Third, the linguistic cleavage between the Flemish and the French-speaking group. Also the university expansion was influenced by these oppositions. Belgium has in addition to state universities a strong group of free universities, mainly Catholic, but two non-confessional universities as well. Each university wanted to take as much advantage of the university expansion politics as possible. Since 1971 both systems, free and state universities are subsidized on equal basis. Moreover, the opposition between the Dutch speaking group and the French speaking group was the cause of fierce debate about the means for university expansion in Flanders, The French-speaking Community, and Brussels (Verhoeven, 1982).

He is currently employed at the University of Zagreb School of Medicine as full professor of neuroscience and anatomy as well as director of the Croatian Institute for Brain Research and director of the Center of Excellence in Neuroscience. He also serves as the Vice-rector for Science, Inter-institutional cooperation and International relations at the University of Zagreb. His research fields of interest are: developmental neuroscience, human brain neuroanatomy, developmental and evolutionary neurobiology of cognitive functions and language, and the history of neuroscience. Miloš Judaš has published 169 publications, which have been cited (until the end of 2018) as follows: Web of Science 2.025 times (h-index 22); Scopus 2.324 times (h-index 22); Google Scholar 3.104 times (h-index 24). He also published two books and 12 chapters in leading international handbooks and textbooks. He was invited lecturer at many international meetings and schools. With Professor Ivica Kostović, he founded the Croatian Institute for Brain Research and the Croatian Society of Neuroscience, as well as the first Doctoral (Ph.D.) Program in Neuroscience in Croatia.
