Congratulations for promoting the discussion at TDN regarding ADo We Need A Sturdier Racehorse?@ (TDN Magazine) . I hope many people will continue to enjoy this promotion. I would like to take this opportunity to make some comments that might be interesting to others, helping many to look at and see this issue based on another point of view. I am a Brazilian citizen who has been directly involved with Thoroughbreds since 1968. I had a practical scholarship in Europe for two years, served as officer of the first Brazilian sales agency, was a Thoroughbred trainer in Sno Paulo (after one year with Angel Penna, Sr. at Belmont Park), and have been an American resident since 1989, established in Kentucky. As such, I thought the way I look at, and see, the soundness of the actual Thoroughbred might be interesting to others, based on my practical experience. First, I do believe that soundness-unsoundness is directly affected by speed. It is a fact that when an individual gets tired, his muscles relax, and it becomes Inquiries to: John J. Slow horses usually don=t became unsound, stupid and fast horses usually became unsound, and smart horses can be fast, and are the ones who usually keep themselves sound. In Europe, much was written that around the seven- furlong mark and the one-mile mark, the Thoroughbred needs a Abreath@ to keep on going if he has enough stamina. I have never done any investigation on this, but it seems to me that this observation is correct in several horses. I do know that America has created a

Thoroughbred type with two joint characteristics that are often at conflicting ends: the ability to blossom early on as a 2-year-old, and the ability to show a cruising and finishing speed to go 1 1/8 miles in almost

a single Abreath.@ That is why I believe the world looks

nowadays for this kind of Thoroughbred in American bloodstock. When horses are kept in cruising and fast speed for long, they get tired, their muscles relax, the skeleton doesn=t hold properly, bad steps are taken, fractures occur, surgeries are performed and the per-start statistical records goes down. It is difficult is to say if this is because of inheritance factors from sires who raced on drugs, and if it is, to what degree it occurs. It is a fact that a good number of stallions that have run on drugs do became profitable, as well as becoming leading sires in countries that race under drug-free regulations. This number of stallions seems significant to me, and is worth checking for accuracy.
