SUBMISSION OF THESIS TO CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY: Degree of Master of Arts (Honours) ABSTRACT The thesis examines contemporary works of art which seek to illuminate, describe or explore the concept of ‘eternity’ in a modern context. Eternity is an ongoing theme in art history, particularly from Christian perspectives. Through an analysis of artworks which regard eternity with intellectual and spiritual integrity, this thesis will explain how the interpretation of ‘eternity’ in visual art of the twentieth century has been shaped. It reviews how Christian art has been situated in visual culture, considers its future directions, and argues that recent forms are expanding our conception of this enigmatic topic. In order to establish how eternity has been addressed as a theme in art history, the thesis will consider how Christian art has found a place in Western visual culture and how diverse influences have moulded the interpretation of eternity. An outline of a general cosmology of eternity will be treated and compared to the character of time in the material world. Next, a brief history of interpretations of eternity in visual art will establish a twentieth-century context, concentrating on forms that have influenced Western-Christian perspectives. The important ideological changes from antiquity to the present will be outlined, especially regarding the theological, social and cultural characteristics involved in the creation and reception of these artworks. Overview. This paper will examine contemporary works of art which seek to illuminate, describe or explore the concept of ‘eternity’ in a modern context. Eternity is an ongoing theme in art history, particularly from Christian perspectives. Through an analysis of artworks which regard eternity with intellectual and spiritual integrity, this thesis will explain how the interpretation of ‘eternity’ in visual art of the twentieth century has been shaped. It reviews how Christian art has been situated in visual culture, considers its future directions, and argues that recent forms are expanding our conception of this enigmatic topic. Within this review, a specifically Protestant perspective of eternity will be traced. Protestant theology today is varied because of the many different branches of the church. However this thesis will posit a general Protestant theology with particular attention to how it relates to art and eternity. It will also relate these theologies to modern philosophies and theories of time and eternity as relevant to the artists concerned. Artworks addressing eternity produced within the last eighty years have been collected and contextualised within postmodern society. These embrace topics such as today’s theories of the relationship of time to eternity, the contemporary Protestant standpoint on 3 this relationship and its views on the place and purpose of art, the influence of Postmodern ideals on art, and the contemporary understanding of eternity. The main section of this paper will examine contemporary works of art which seek to illuminate, describe or explore the concept of eternity in a modern context. The works (including fine art, film and new media will show how interpretations of ‘eternity’ in contemporary art may be re-assessed through a twenty first century Christian/Protestant interpretative framework. This framework is influenced by such contemporary factors as the global technology revolution, postmodernism and relativism. This section will be divided into smaller sections exploring eternity from such standpoints as The Eternal Logos to Installation Works. This will conclude with an analysis of possible future directions for art as it continues to explore the concept of eternity. Introduction. Does eternity exist; and if so what are its characteristics, and how does it relate metaphysically to our universe? The Christian/Protestant perspective of eternity began with Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430)1 who believed eternity was an atemporal universe,2 distinct from this universe. In essence, the Protestant perspective of eternity is the same. It is the universe containing the traditional Trinity of God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) - the time and place from which our material universe was created.3 Christian Theology posits eternity as being divided into two distinct realms - Heaven and Hell. Here, eternity is more than just eternal time - it is a place - distinct from the world in which we currently live. Given these conditions, eternity is a somewhat imaginary environment and concept, which has inspired a great variety of interpretations throughout history. Art history provides opportunities to demonstrate the different theoretical characteristics and features of time and eternity when considered from religious and secular perspectives. For example the Christian view of time is that it is linear4, whereas Eastern religions (Buddhist, Hindu), see time as circular.5 How has this affected each belief’s view on eternity? Since cyclical time is eternal time, this has fostered views that eternity exists within the universe in which we live. Whereas for the Christian, linear time plays a role in the need for an ‘apocalypse’6, a ‘completion’ to time, when the universe as we know it ends and eternity ‘begins’. Some aesthetic and artistic characteristics have persisted while others have faded into obscurity in recent depictions of time and eternity

    ON HUMAN PRESENCE INSIDE THE REPRESENTATION SPACE OF THE PAINT BRUSH Aurora Corominas [email protected] SUMMARY First the museum video and then the cinema have explored human presence immersed in pictorial material. In this article we appraise the narrative ideas of two films based on the new readabilities which have emerged from the synthetic image: episode number 5, The Crows from the film Dreams by Akira Kurosawa (1990), and What Dreams May Come by Vincent Ward (1998). Both films use the language of fables to structure their transgression against nature and both substantially broaden the viewer’s horizons of expectation, so that he sees the particular gaze the artist expressed in the pictorial originals surpassed. KEY WORDS Film aesthetics, Comparative film, Language of fables, Artist’s gesture, Film and painting ARTICLE In the second half of the 1980s, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris conceived a series of audiovisual productions to attract different kinds of audience and to publicise its collection beyond the context of the museum. That meant that they set out to show the audiovisuals not only far from the presence of the works, but also from the official discourse of the museum, which brought greater freedom when it came to finding new approaches to those same works. Sociological and statistical surveys indicated that in those years only 30% of French people went to museums, although it was a golden age in terms of the number of visits to cultural centres. Moreover, the same surveys revealed that regular visits to museums and watching television were two socially opposed practices.

He is contemplating death and if this cessation of temporal life this side of the grave described as “a sea of troubles” bring to pass sweet dreams or nightmares. Here are Shakespeare’s words from Hamlet, “To die, to sleep – to sleep, perchance to dream. Ah, there’s the rub, for in that sleep of death what dreams may come….” Here Hamlet contemplates dreams that await us in “the undiscovered country…” In August 9 Newsweek’s article, The Mystery of Dreams , Barbara Kantrowitz and Karen Springden say “… it’s (researching our dreams) the closest we’ve come to recording the soul,” Rosalind Cartwright, a chairman of psychology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago says, “If you’re going to understand human behavior, here’s a big piece of it. Dreaming is our own storytelling time- to help us know who we are, where we’re going and how we’re going to get there.” In the Book of Acts God repeats a promise from Joel concerning the last days, "And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams" (Acts 2:17). God has a lot to say about dreams. You will find sixty-one verses that mention “dream,” twenty-one verses that mention the plural form “dreams,” four verses that mention “dreamers,” seventeen verses using the word “dreamed,” seventy-three usages of “vision,” and twenty-four times “visions” is mentioned.

Towards a Cinematic Realized Eschatology Christopher Deacy Introduction Although the last century has, arguably, “generated more eschatological discussion than any other”1, Andrew Chester makes the instructive point that – paradoxical though it may seem to be – there has been a relative scarcity of eschatological thinking within Christian theology. Chester’s thinking, here, is that, from the Patristic period onward, eschatology was never as fully developed, profoundly reflected upon, or given as rigorous and imaginative intellectual probing, as were such other areas of Christian theology as Christology (Christian doctrine about the person of Christ) and soteriology. The specific context of Chester’s argument does not revolve around debates in the field of theology and film, but there is an important sense in which what he is arguing in his article finds a certain resonance in film and theology circles. When he writes that “There is still a need for a rigorous and intellectually sustainable account of Christian eschatology”2, the case could equally be made that when filmmakers draw on traditional images and representations of eschatology in their works – and there is little doubt that themes of death and the afterlife comprise perennial themes in cinema, as evinced by the likes of A Matter of Life and Death (Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger, 1945), Heaven Can Wait (Warren Beatty & Buck Henry, 1978), Made in Heaven (Alan Rudolph, 1987), Ghost (Jerry Zucker, 1990), Defending Your Life (Albert Brooks, 1991) and What Dreams

Cheetham June, 1982 THESIS ABSTRACT "Revision and Exploration: German Landscape Depiction and Theory in the Late Eighteenth Century" My thesis focuses on the work of German painters in Italy c.l770-1800, and addresses issues raised by their complex relationship with the 17th century Italianate landscape tradition. Jakob Philipp Hackert (1737-1807), Johann Christian Reinhart (1761-1847), and Joseph Anton Koch (1768- 1839) worked in Italy precisely because they considered them- selves to be thg inheritors of the 17th century landscape style of Claude, Dughet, Rosa, and Nicolas Poussin. But while the German paintings do resemble the earlier works, they also revise the 17th century programme of representing Ideal nature. They are more detailed and precise in their depiction of natural phenomena; they also represent natural events and sites not included in the traditional canon. Extrapolating from 18th century critical terminology, I have developed the term "particularity" to focus attention on this unprecedented attentiontt the details of nature. I argue that the late 18th century German landscapes revise the Italianate landscape tradition so that it embodies particularity, and that the impetus for this change comes from two contemporary sources: natural history -- especially the nascent sciences of geology and biology -- and art theory. My argument is divided into three sections. In the first, I establish the existence and visual characteristics of particu- larity first by contrasting 17th century versions of the famous cascades at Tivoli (by Claude, Dughet, and others) with depic- tions of the same site by late 18th century German artists, and second, by describing the new sites which were explored and depicted by Hackert, Reinhart, and Koch.

Calhoon Nosferatu (1922): Following a cautionary title-card, the iris opens briefly on a provincial town square. Shot from the roof of a Gothic church, its spire prominent in the foreground, the scene has the burnished feel of an albumen print. Tiny human figures can be made out on the streets below, the first harbingers of morning bustle. The iris reopens on Thomas Hutter, arranging his neckwear in a mirror, the back of his hair gilded by sunlight entering through the window at his right. With an air of characteristic self-approbation, he straight- ens and faces left. Suddenly, as if reined in by an unexpected sound, he tiptoes to the window and peers out over its ledge (Fig. 1).1 He has overheard his wife, Ellen, shown standing at an adjacent or facing window (Fig. 2). The sill is covered with potted plants; ornate wallpaper and an array of family portraits are visible in the room behind her. She is toying with a cat, inciting it to play with a locket on a chain. The camera lingers as Ellen contends with the kitten’s nonchalance. The scene has all the attributes of a tableau, presented to a gaze of which it is, or purports to be, unaware. Ellen’s innocence, which is consistent with the autonomy of the ambient space, depends on the absence of an observer.     ঃਆઽࢂ෈ٷணপ࠙ 제17권 2호 (2009): 197-212 Adaptations of Dante’s Commedia in Popular American Fiction and Film Philip Edward Phillips (Middle Tennessee State University) The punishments reflect the sins in Dante Alighieri’s Commedia. Indeed, drawing upon Augustinian and Thomistic theology, Dante creates punishments in the circles of the Commedia that hauntingly reveal to the reader the nature of each sin and the damned condition of each class of sinner. Dante identifies the logical relationship between sin and its punishment in the Commedia as “contrapasso,” or “counterpoise,” as translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his 1867 translation of the Inferno. The concept of “counterpoise” is related to the Old Testament notion of exacting “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” but it is far more complex notion. Dante uses the troubadour poet, Bertrand de Born (ca. 1140-ca.1215), who was responsible for encouraging discord between King Henry II of England and his son, the young Prince Henry, as the defining 198 Philip Edward Phillips example of “counterpoise” in the Inferno, Circle 8, Bolgia 9. The pilgrim Dante says to his guide, the great Roman epic poet, Virgil: I truly saw, and still I seem to see it, A trunk without a head walk in like manner As walked the others in the mournful herd.
