Background: The Etobicoke Community Council had before it a communication dated September 18, 2002, from Councillor Rob Ford, Ward 2 – Etobicoke North, requesting, for the reasons outlined in the communication, that the requirement of the Transportation Services Division that a sidewalk be installed on Molson Canada’s property, specifically the Galaxy Boulevard frontage, and payment of a fee, be waived. - 2 - The following persons appeared before the Etobicoke Community Council in connection with this matter: - Amir Remtulla, Manager, Corporate Affairs, Ontario West Region, Molson Canada; and - Mark Hayward, Ross & Anglin Ontario Ltd. City Clerk Mary Casini/sd Item 39 Attachment Sent to: Works Committee Councillor Rob Ford, Ward 2 – Etobicoke North Director of Community Planning, West District Amir Remtulla, Manager, Corporate Affairs, Ontario West Region, Molson Canada Mark Hayward, Ross & Anglin Ontario Ltd. c. Director, Transportation Services, District 2 Al Smithies, Manager, Right-of-Way Management, Traffic Planning, District 2 ROB FORD__________ Councillor Etobicoke North – Ward 2 September 18, 2002 Etobicoke Community Council 399 The West Mall Toronto, ON M9C 2YC Dear Fellow Councillors; I am writing to you today to consider an important corporate constituent in my Ward of Etobicoke North. This firm made a decision to not only remain doing business in Etobicoke and the City of Toronto, but to also to make a major investment of $34.8 million in upgrades to their 35 year old site. This past February, I attended the groundbreaking with Mayor Mel Lastman, Local 325 President Greg Greco and President & CEO Dan O'Neill, for the 50-thousand square foot warehouse structure and a state-of-the-art packaging line. The capital project will upgrade the brewery, increase efficiency at the world-class facility and keep over 1000 jobs and tax dollars in Toronto. Supporting the local economy and the community is what Molson does. Staff of the Transportation Department has insisted on a requirement of a sidewalk on Molson’s Galaxy Blvd frontage. This suggested sidewalk is in an industrial subdivision crossing a heavily utilised truck gate/driveway and if ever used by a pedestrian would most likely result in an unfortunate tragic event. I have attended the site on a number of occasions and did not see one person walking. What I did see was tractor-trailer units coming and going every 45-60 seconds. The sidewalks or lack thereof in the area are not linked and I doubt that will happen during this or future Councils. The P&F City-Wide Sidewalk Program is unresolved so please consider my request to have the Galaxy sidewalk condition and fee waived and let Molson’s get on with production. I believe in investment and any company that wants to expand in Etobicoke should be assisted and not hindered by the City. Keep Etobicoke North and the entire City a great place to do business. Sincerely, Rob Ford Councillor, Ward 2.
