About Ancona

Ancona is a city and a seaport in the region, in central , located 280 km northeast of , on the . Ancona stands on an elbow shaped promontory, protecting the widest natural port of the middle Adriatic Sea. The name itself of the town reminds its geographical position: “ankon” in Greek means \'elbow\' and this is the way the Greek people called the place and founded the town in 387 b.C. Ancona is on the top of a cliff, it has a heart rich of history and monuments and well-preserved semi- urban parks. The city has one of the main ports on the Adriatic Sea, especially for passengers’ traffic, and it is the main economic and demographic centre of the region.

How to reach Ancona?

By train

The main train station is named “Ancona Centrale” and it is placed in the city-center. You can buy the bus ticket at the newspaper shop, inside the train station hall. The price is 1,25 euro each.

By plane

Ancona Airport (AOI) is called the “Aeroporto delle Marche” and is located 18 km from the city. It is connected with many national and international airports. For more information - http://www.marcheairport.com/en

You may travel from Airport to Ancona city center by Aerobus or by taxy.

AEROBUS RAFFAELLO is a bus that connects airport with the city center. In only 30 minutes you will arrive to the city, tickets are sold on the bus - 5,50 euro. The other option is by TAXY: it will take 15 minutes from the airport to the city center of Ancona – 38 euro.

MEETING venue

The meeting will be held in “Caserma Villarey”, the Economy Faculty of the Università Politecnica delle Marche. We reserved rooms for the Working groups and the conference hall for the plenary session.

Weather The climate of Ancona is humid and the city lies on the border between Mediterranean and more continental regions. In April the weather will be variable with chances for rainfalls, clouds or sunny days. In any case the temperature will be warm and enjoyable (max 20 Celsius degrees).

Food Ancona is one of the biggest stock fish (dried salt cod) importers and “Stoccafisso all’ Anconetana” has a special place in the heart of people and in the history and tradition of this town. “Brodetto”, a fish stew with a tomato base, is also a very typical and famous dish of the place.

Other specialties of the place are “moscioli” based dishes: “Moscioli” are non-breeding mussels spontaneously reproducing on tracts of reefs in Portonovo of Ancona area, and exactly on the tract of coast that goes from Pietralacroce until the beach of Sassi Neri (black Stones) at .
