How we worked with the NHS and Public Health in 2017 We support and provide services to help the NHS in many ways. We work across the UK to influence and improve respiratory services and outcomes. Our projects and programmes aim to: • Raise awareness of lung health • Help people get diagnosed and receive treatment • Improve self-management and self-care • Promote positive activities and behaviours Below are some of the programmes we have delivered with NHS partners in 2017: 1. Hull Love Your Lungs public awareness and screening campaign There are over 7500 people in Hull with COPD and it is estimated 6000 people are living with the condition without a diagnosis. We screened 253 people in Hull working in partnership with Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Foundation Trust, City Healthcare Partnership, NHS Hull Clinical Commissioning Group and Hull City Council Public Health. 26% of those screened were referred to one-stop follow-up clinics run by the Respiratory team at Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Foundation. This programme of screening and follow up resulted in a 7% diagnosis rate of COPD. 2. NHS Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG Peterborough and Wisbech were chosen to run a Love Your Lungs campaign. These areas were targeted because of risk factors for lung conditions including: • Smoking prevalence in Peterborough is higher than the national average and accounts for around 250 preventable deaths every year. • 34% of people in Peterborough live in the most deprived 20% of areas in England. Studies demonstrate the association of increasingly poor health with increasing deprivation. • Wisbech LCG has a higher prevalence of COPD than the CCG and national averages. We screened 218 people and referred 31 (14%) back to their GP for further tests. A quarter (25%) of the people screened were current smokers demonstrating the high smoking rate in the area. NHS Telford and Wrekin CCG Our self-management programmes support people with COPD to be active partners and managers of their health. We have been commissioned by NHS Telford and Wrekin CCG to run an 18 month self- management coaching programme. We are using behaviour change methodology in a programme of telephone coaching and workshop attendance. Our objective is that people understand their condition better and set personal goals that will help improve their quality of life. Our intention is they will reduce their need to use NHS services. 4. Wales Love Your Lungs Wales Government and NHS Wales funded us to deliver a COPD awareness and screening campaign for a second consecutive year. Building on the success of the campaign in 2016 we delivered events in Ebbw Vale, Merthyr Tydfil, Port Talbot, Pontypridd and Rhyl. 729 people were screened and 155 (21%) were referred to their GP. The highest referral rates were from the events in Port Talbot (28%) and Rhyl (33%). 5. Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council Tameside is 105th out of 149 local authorities for mortality from lung disease. There were 76 deaths in 2016 of which 45 were preventable. Estimated prevalence and actual diagnosed numbers of COPD differ across the borough. Working with Tameside Public Health our campaign was delivered in the area’s with the largest predicted number of missing COPD diagnosis: Ashton, Denton and Hyde. 620 people were screened and 21% were referred to their GP. Clarendon Square shopping centre in Hyde had the largest referral rate of 27%. This represented the high predicted number (1051) of undiagnosed cases of COPD in Hyde.
