This breeding and racing activity have evolved and progressed over the decades and the Aga Khan Studs now boast high-class commercial stallions, prestigious maternal lines, and successful racehorses that have gathered more than 150 Group 1 victories. The Aga Khan Studs flagship sires, Sea The Stars and Siyouni, are members of the elite ranks of European stallions and both enjoyed further Classic glory in 2019. Gilltown Stud’s Sea The Stars won a second consecutive Irish Oaks thanks to the exceptional Star Catcher, also winner of the Prix Vermeille and British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes, while Crystal Ocean shared Longines World’s Best Racehorse honours with Enable and Waldgeist, and champion stayer Stradivarius recorded a streak of ten consecutive races. Haras de Bonneval resident Siyouni was again crowned leading French-based sire. His principal representative was Pat Downes Prix du Jockey Club hero and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe third Sottsass, and 2018 Prix de Diane winner Laurens brought her Manager, Irish Studs Group 1 score up to six with victory in the Prix Rothschild during August.

AFor me, that=s the most important thing. On top of that, he was a great horse trainer.@ Gary Jones was the son of longtime California-based trainer Farrell Jones and took over his father=s stable upon his retirement in 1975. He picked right up where his father left off, winning with the first horse he ever saddled, King Wako, on Dec. 26, 1975 at Santa Anita, and quickly established himself as one of the leading trainers in Southern California. It was time to sit up and take notice when the Aga Khan decided to keep Kastoria in training this year at the age of five. A survey of the latest edition of the Aga=s stud book reveals that that the vast majority of his homebred broodmares, which number around 170, were retired after their three-year-old season. If I=ve counted correctly, there were only 16 exceptions to this rule and none of these 16 had been given the chance to compete at the age of five. So why was Kastoria asked to break new ground? The decision to keep her in training possibly owed something to Europe=s much improved programme for older fillies and mares, but I suspect that the main reason was that Kastoria still had so much untapped potential. A severe sinus problem, which was relieved by a hole being bored into her face, had severely restricted her career as a young filly.
