Wright Brothers National Memorial Chicamacomico Life-saving Station Four lighthouses The Whalehead Club Wild horse tour Military Aviation Museum Virginia International Tattoo Bodie Island Lighthouse Elizabeth II DAY 1 SUNDAY, APRIL 11 KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC (Dinner) Our journey to the East Coast begins today as we transfer to the airport for our early morning flight to Norfolk, Virginia. Upon our arrival in Norfolk, we will board our motorcoach and journey to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A 130-mile stretch of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, the Outer Banks is a different kind of place. Beautifully natural, formed by centuries of wind, water, and sand blown from the Atlantic Ocean, and home to a rich history, it's a place that inspires a true sense of adventure! Our first stop will be the Wright Brothers National Memorial to see where Wilbur and Orville Wright changed the world forever on a cold day in 1903. Their powered airplane the “Wright Flyer” skimmed over the sands of the Outer Banks for twelve seconds before returning to the ground. Thus, the era of aviation was born. Following our visit, we will check into our hotel and enjoy a delicious welcome dinner. Note: The airport location and airline will be confirmed no sooner than nine months before departure. DAY 2 MONDAY, APRIL 12 KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC (Breakfast, Dinner) Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning before we journey through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore with visits to lighthouses, a museum, and a life-saving station! Our first stop is the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Those who wish can climb to the top of the lighthouse, while others can admire the most picturesque lighthouse in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore from ground level. As our tour continues, we will stop by the Chicamacomico Life-saving Station. A predecessor to the United States Coast Guard, the Chicamacomico is one of the most complete life-saving stations in the nation. We’ll see the historic buildings and boathouse that house the service and hear about daring ocean rescues throughout history. Our next stop is the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras Village to learn about the rich maritime history of the Outer Banks and the more than 2,000 known shipwrecks along the coast. Check out the interesting artifacts housed in the museum, including cannons from Blackbeard's Queen Anne’s Revenge, an Enigma machine from the U-85, and more! A photo stop at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will end our day’s adventure before we have dinner at a locally owned restaurant. DAY 3 TUESDAY, APRIL 13 KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC (Breakfast, Dinner) Following breakfast this morning, we will stroll through the majestic Elizabethan Gardens, which were designed as a living memorial to Queen Elizabeth and the Lost Colony. The Gardens include a collection of Renaissance statues and Elizabethan-style buildings that take visitors back to the time of Queen Elizabeth I. After our visit, we will walk over to the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site to see the site of the first English colony settled by explorers and subsequent colonists in the New World. Later it became known as the Lost Colony after 116 settlers disappeared. Next we’ll head to historic downtown Manteo to enjoy some free time for lunch and shopping! This afternoon we will explore Roanoke Island Festival Park’s Adventure Museum and Settlement Site to learn about life for the early explorers when they arrived on Roanoke Island. Also in the park is the Elizabeth II, a 69-foot sailing vessel representing those who sailed to the New World. As we make our way back to our hotel late in the afternoon, we will stop at Jockey’s Ridge State Park to see the largest living sand dune on the East Coast. Dinner this evening is at another locally owned restaurant. DAY 4 WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14 KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC (Breakfast, Lunch) This morning we will journey up north to the village of Corolla to visit the Currituck Beach Lighthouse at Currituck Heritage Park. This is the only lighthouse in North Carolina still housed in its original structure, and it still functions as a guide for passing mariners. Next up is the Whalehead Club, a restored 1925 house museum built as a private residence by the wealthy Philadelphia industrial Edward Collings-Knight, Jr. Following lunch at a local restaurant, we will embark on a wild horse tour (subject to availability). Our open-air Hummers will cruise along the Outer Banks beaches in search of the famous Colonial Spanish Mustangs in their natural environment. The evening is yours to have dinner on your own. Wild horse in the Outer Banks Virginia International Tattoo DAY 5 THURSDAY, APRIL 15 VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (Breakfast) Today we depart North Carolina's Outer Banks bound for Virginia Beach, Virginia. We will stop along the way at the Military Aviation Museum, which houses one of the largest private collections of World War I and World War II-era military aircraft in the world. Each airplane in the collection tells a unique story about the men and women who designed them, built them, flew them, and all too often died in them seventy-five years ago. Following our tour, we will visit Mermaid Winery for a private wine tasting. Our day will come to an end at our oceanfront hotel with an evening at leisure. DAY 6 FRIDAY, APRIL 16 VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (Breakfast, Dinner) We’ll begin our morning with a guided tour of Virginia Beach. Our first stop will be First Landing, which commemorates the 1607 landing on Cape Henry. The group of English settlers that landed here eventually moved west and formed Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America. Situated nearby, the Cape Henry Lighthouse was the first federally funded public works project by the new United States government. This afternoon will bring us to one of the oldest surviving colonial homes in Virginia Beach, the Thoroughgood House. Our guide will provide us with a glimpse into the daily life of a wealthy Virginia colonist who lived here and share stories that go along with the house. We will make it back to the hotel by mid-afternoon and enjoy some time to relax. Re-energized, we’ll head to Norfolk this evening for a dinner cruise aboard the Spirit of Norfolk. Dine, dance, play games, and lounge as we take in the spectacular views along the Elizabeth River. Be sure to admire the mighty ships and submarines of the Navy's Atlantic Fleet! DAY 7 SATURDAY, APRIL 17 VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (Breakfast, Dinner) Following breakfast this morning, we’ll return to Norfolk to visit the Battleship Wisconsin, one of the largest and last battleships built by the United States Navy. We will walk her decks, stand beneath the towering 16” guns, and explore life on board as a sailor before strolling through the interactive science center called Nauticus. Once back in Virginia Beach, the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own leisure. To cap off our tour in a very special way, tonight we will enjoy dinner and attend the Virginia International Tattoo! The tattoo is the largest spectacle of music and might in the United States. There will an astounding display of military music, show-stopping drill team maneuvers, dancers, majestic drums and pipes, and so much more. The show features over one thousand performers from several countries. It’s a moving and inspirational experience you don't want to miss!
