WELCOME TO THE 38 TH ANNUAL CONVENTION OF THE ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS Friday, November 14, 1997

It is with great pleasure that I welcome the 38th Annual Convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs to San Diego. The Hawaiian community has long contributed to the vibrant, multi-cultural city that is San Diego, and we are so pleased to host this year's convention. I'm sure that your stay in our fine city will prove to be everything you imagined and much more.

San Diego is blessed with numerous attractions which are available for your enrichment, recreation and relaxation. Most people think of San Diego for our beautiful beaches and waterfront activities, but we have so much more to experience! Downtown San Diego is an exciting, 24 hour city with world-class restaurants and entertainment in the historic Gaslamp Quarter. Horton Plaza is an award-winning retail center with unique department stores and specialty shops that are within walking distance of fabulous galleries, theaters, and brand new hotels.

Our city boasts several prestigious universities, and is home to a burgeoning hi-tech industry. We are very proud of our world famous zoo and dozens of fascinating museums in beautiful Balboa Park. Our proximity to the Mexican border, Sea World, historic Old Town, Mission Bay Parkand Seaport Village on San Diego Bay, are just a few of the reasons San Diego has come to be known as "America's FinestCity."

So again welcome, and please accept my best wishes for a most successful convention!

Mahalo Nui Loa to our Judges THE SAN DIEGO CONNECTION William Heath Davis. Hawaiian founder of New Town San Diego By Gail Wright

William Heath ""anaka Bill" Davis (I822·'909) was a successful California business man ofHawaiian ancestry who was one ofthose responsible for the initial founding ofNew Town San Diego in '850. He was the principal partner ofa pioneering group thatlaidout what is nowa major part ofdowntown San Diego. Davis and his partners purchased '60 acres ofbrush andcactus land for $2.304 believing that a town closer tothe waterfront than"Old Town" would attracta thriving trade. Davis' first priority in New Town was to build a wharf (at the foot ofwhat isnowMarket Street). For $60.000 he had a wharfandseveral prefabricated houses shipped around Cape Horn from Portland. Maine.

One ofhisoriginal homes still stands on Island Street in the Gaslamp Quarter as a museum and tribute to thisSan Diego founder. The opening ofthe William Heath Davis House and Park in'986wasa tribute to Davis andhiscontribution to the development ofSan Diego. Athriving. beautiful parkislaid outinhisoriginal '60 acres. located at GStreet and Columbia.

The memory ofWilliam Heath Davis isnothonored as much as that ofAlonzo E. Horton. though it should be. Davis wason the scene well before Horton. "thefather ofSan Diego," came on the scene.

Davis isconsidered a California pioneer. In an interview for the San Diego Sun in the late '880·s. he said. "Of the new town ofSan Diego. now the City ofSan Diego. I can saythat I wasits founder..."

Davis was born in Honolulu. Hawaii'i. in '822. His mother. Hannah Holmes. washalf Hawaiian. andhisfather. Captain "(illiam Davis. was a successful New England seacaptain. Young Davis wasnine years old when he made hisfirst trip to the North American coast from Alaska to San Diego in'83'. Afew years later. he wentto live and work for an uncle. Nathan Spear. at Yerba Buena (now the San Francisco Bay area). It was there thatDavis learned the trading business andwhere he became a successful and wealthy merchant. From that period until '849. when he wasonly28. Davis had become a major trader inSan Diego with Wide business connections all over California.

In '889. Davis published "SixtyYears inCalifornia. a History of Events and Life in California: Personal. Political andMilitary." When Davis died in Ifoo. the event caused no great stir. butgenerations of Californians andHawaiians will continue to read about him through his writings andfor his role in the development ofCalifornia and as a native son ofHawai'i. 1
