In 1945, the owner of the Billy Goat Tavern, Billy Sianis, brought his pet goat into Game 4 of the World Series and was forced to leave due to the goat allegedly bothering fellow fans. Furious for being asked to leave or maybe embarrassed by the incident, Sianis declared or predicted that the Cubs wouldn't win any longer. Nobody knows exactly what was said, but curse or coincidence, the Cubs lost in 1945 and didn't "break the curse" until 2016. Game two of the 2018 World Series was last night L. A. The city of Cleveland has had 68 of those salt-spreading, ice-chopping, snow-shoveling winters between Tribe titles, while Chicagoans with an affinity for the North Siders have all been biding their time in the wintry winds since, in all probability, well before birth. Remarkably, it's been 108 years since the Cubs were last on top of the baseball world. So if patience is a virtue, the Cubs and Tribe are as virtuous as they come. And the 2016 World Series that arrives with Monday's Media Day - - the pinch-us, we're-really-here appetizer to Tuesday's intensely anticipated Game 1 at Progressive Field -- is one pitting fan bases of shared circumstances and sentiments against each other. These are two cities, separated by just 350 miles, on the Great Lakes with no great shakes in the realm of baseball background, and that has instilled in their people a common and eventually unmet refrain of "Why not us?" Volume 15, Issue 1 May 2018 Hallowed place, toxic space: ‘Celebrating’ Steve Bartman and Chicago Cubs’ Fan Pilgrimage Lincoln Geraghty, University of Portsmouth, UK Abstract: This paper is about travelling and exploring, assessing the historical importance of fan pilgrimages and the geographic spaces in which, and through which, fans travel to get closer to their object of fandom. But it also about how those spaces can become toxic, acting as painful reminders of the object turned bad, tragic failure and community rejection. Through a case study of the Steve Bartman incident during the 2003 National League baseball championship playoff game between the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins at Wrigley Field, and an auto-ethnographic study of the physical grounds and stadium, I present ongoing research into fan tourism and sports fandom. The vitriolic reception Bartman received when he inadvertently interfered with a potentially game-winning play that might have seen the Cubs reach their first World Series since 1945 highlights toxic fan behavior familiar to many sports. However, that the seat he occupied on the night serves as an unofficial monument to that moment suggests that even in great controversy and disappointment, Cubs fans find physical space and ‘being there’ just as important to winning or celebrating success. Fans of the Cubs are open in describing themselves as the unlucky losers (e.g. not having won the World Series since 1908 until only this past season), building a fan identity defined by a so- called ‘curse’ and based on years of past failures. Therefore, what happened around the Bartman incident and the fact that his seat is a fan tourist site visited by baseball fans and Cub enthusiasts alike tells us that being a fan is not just about celebrating the good or remembering the great but also about recognizing the bad and mourning the worst.

[1][2] He was outraged and allegedly declared "Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more," which has been interpreted to mean that there would never be another World Series game won at Wrigley Field. The Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908 or played in one since 1945.

    Journal of Religion & Society Volume 7 (2005) ISSN 1522-5658 The Bartman Ball and Sacrifice Ambiguity in an American Ritual Jeffrey Scholes, University of Denver/Iliff School of Theology Abstract Although the power of rituals to provide societal meaning and structure has been on the decline for sometime in the U.S., on February 26, 2004 at a popular Chicago restaurant, an infamous baseball was ceremoniously destroyed in the fashion of a classic sacrifice ritual. Lacking the kind of surrounding society that traditionally produces such rituals, this event seems anomalous. Yet, I will argue, with the aid of certain ritual sacrifice theories, that this event performed a classic sacrificial function – that of reestablishing the proper relationship between the Cubs' fans and its players – and thus is continuous with certain sacrifice rituals of pre-modern societies. At the same time, an underlying intention of those staging the ritual, to receive publicity for their restaurant, served to circumscribe the power of the ritual thus impressing a “modern” stamp on it thereby distinguishing this sacrifice from its predecessors. Introduction [1] A quick glance at the literature in ritual studies over the last century provides one with the undeniable impression of an overwhelming focus on non-Western, traditional cultures. Societies operating under a fully integrated cosmology that binds the community to a deity and to one another have tended to generate vivid rituals that help to maintain social cohesion, hence the focus. Therefore, the neglect of ritual analysis of post-industrialized societies can be attributed, in part, to a lack of conspicuous rituals such as initiation rites and sacrifices.

Cubs are going to the World Series By Bradford Doolittle CHICAGO -- Somewhere in a cramped booth at Wrigley Field, high above a playing surface erupting with unrestrained jubilation, veteran broadcaster Pat Hughes gave his listeners the news that few of them thought they’d ever hear: The Chicago Cubs are going to the World Series. The most dramatic result of the past seven decades of Cubs baseball unfolded in almost shockingly undramatic fashion. Dexter Fowler, Kris Bryant and Ben Zobrist drove in runs early. Willson Contreras homered in the fourth, Anthony Rizzo in the fifth. Starter Kyle Hendricks was brilliant into the eighth inning. Aroldis Chapman lit up the scoreboard with triple-digit velocity to finish it off. The Cubs beat the Dodgers 5-0 to win the National League Championship Series in six games. Just like that, the Cubs -- the Chicago Cubs -- are National League champions. The win was the latest and largest in a historic season for a Cubs franchise that has been operating since 1876. Seventy-one years removed from their last pennant, and 108 years since their last World Series crown, the Cubs won 103 games during the regular season, then survived the elite pitching of the Giants and Dodgers to emerge from the National League playoffs. Six times the Cubs had played a game to clinch an NLCS -- three times in 1984, three more in 2003. They held leads in five of those games, yet the pennant drought persisted year after year, disappointment after disappointment. The organization became better known for its venerable ballpark and its partylike atmosphere than actual baseball, all while bearing the unfortunate moniker “Lovable Losers.” They’re still lovable, but they are losers no more.

Dow, Jr. THE BILLY GOAT CHIP ) COMPANY LLC, ) ) Defendant. ) MEMORANDUM OPINION AND ORDER Plaintiff Billy Goat IP LLC (“Plaintiff”) brings suit against Defendant the Billy Goat Chip Company LLC (“Defendant”) for federal trademark infringement and unfair competition, violation of Illinois’ Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act and Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act, and common law trademark infringement, arising out of Defendant’s use of the phrase “Billy Goat” in connection with food and beverage sales. Currently before the Court is Defendant’s motion to dismiss Plaintiff’s complaint for failure to state a claim [17]. For the reasons explained below, Defendant’s motion [17] is denied. This case is set for status hearing on August 22, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. I. Background1 The original Billy Goat Tavern was established by William “Billy Goat” Sianis in 1934 at 1855 W. Madison Street in Chicago, across for the Chicago Stadium (now the United Center).
