Reign Men Taps Into a Compelling Oral History of Game 7 in the 2016 World Series
Reign Men taps into a compelling oral history of Game 7 in the 2016 World Series. Talking Cubs heads all top CSN Chicago producers need in riveting ‘Reign Men’ By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Thursday, March 23, 2017 Some of the most riveting TV can be a bunch of talking heads. The best example is enjoying multiple airings on CSN Chicago, the first at 9:30 p.m. Monday, March 27. When a one-hour documentary combines Theo Epstein and his Merry Men of Wrigley Field, who can talk as good a game as they play, with the video skills of world-class producers Sarah Lauch and Ryan McGuffey, you have a must-watch production. We all know “what” happened in the Game 7 Cubs victory of the 2016 World Series that turned from potentially the most catastrophic loss in franchise history into its most memorable triumph in just a few minutes in Cleveland. Now, thanks to the sublime re- porting and editing skills of Lauch and McGuffey, we now have the “how” and “why” through the oral history contained in “Reign Men: The Story Behind Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.” Anyone with sense is tired of the endless shots of the 35-and-under bar crowd whooping it up for top sports events. The word here is gratuitous. “Reign Men” largely eschews those images and other “color” shots in favor of telling the story. And what a tale to tell. Lauch and McGuffey, who have a combined 20 sports Emmy Awards in hand for their labors, could have simply done a rehash of what many term the greatest Game 7 in World Series history. -

Almost a Pelican
Almost A Pelican By S. Derby Gisclair The winningest pitcher in Cleveland Indians history, in 1962 Feller became the first pitcher since charter member Walter Johnson to be elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Though regarded as the fastest pitcher of his day, he himself attributed his strikeout records to his curve and slider. Blessed with a strong arm and an encouraging father, young Feller pitched to a makeshift backstop on the family farm near Van Meter, Iowa. Cleveland scout Cy Slapnicka signed him for one dollar and an autographed baseball. His velocity became an immediate legend when he struck out eight Cardinals in a three-inning exhibition stint. He came up as a 17- year-old at the end of 1936 and fanned 15 Browns in his first ML start and 17 Athletics shortly thereafter. But he was extremely wild. In 1938 he became a regular starter for the Indians. He won 17 and led the AL in strikeouts with 240. He also set a ML record with 208 walks. Although he led the AL in walks three more times, his control progressively improved. Meanwhile, he led the AL in both strikeouts and wins from 1939 to 1941. In 1940, he won his personal high with 27, including an Opening Day no-hitter against the White Sox. Yet the year was tarnished, first when Cleveland veterans, including Feller, earned the nickname Crybabies by asking Cleveland owner Alva Bradley to replace stern manager Ossie Vitt. Then Feller lost the season's climactic game and the pennant to Tigers unknown Floyd Giebell, despite pitching a three-hitter. -

Indians Party Like It's 1997 After Winning Pennant
Indians party like it's 1997 after winning pennant Cleveland will host Game 1 of the World Series for first time in its history By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | 12:38 AM ET TORONTO -- They took turns passing the trophy around. A bottle in one hand and the hardware in the other, one by one, Cleveland's players savored their moment. They would stare at it, champagne dripping from the gold eagle that sits atop the black base, pausing for a moment before posing for photos. In that brief personal moment, the players probably thought about all that had to happen for the Indians to reach this stage, for that trophy to be placed in their arms. Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Blue Jays in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series, a victory that clinched the franchise's sixth AL pennant, gave the world a look at what has defined this Indians team all season long, and why it is now going to the World Series. "I'm just really happy that we're standing here today," said Indians president Chris Antonetti, as his players partied on the other side of Rogers Centre's visitors' clubhouse. "However we got here, I'm not sure I've reflected back on. But this team, the resiliency, the grit, the perseverance to overcome all that they've gone through over the course of the season ..." More champagne bottles popped behind him. "The guys we have are not focused on who's not here," he continued, "but focused on the guys that are here and [they] try to find a way to help them win. -

Gateway Economic Development Corporation of Greater Cleveland (Gateway) was formed in 1990 by the City of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, for the purposes of financing, building, owning and operating the Gateway Sports Complex in downtown Cleveland. Gateway owns Quicken Loans Arena, as well as Progressive Field and surrounding common areas, including Gateway Plaza along Ontario Avenue. Gateway’s lease agreements with the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Cavaliers, as revised and extended in 2004 and 2007, facilitate Gateway’s ability to continue as a good steward of these two tremendous buildings, as it has been for a generation. The leases with the Indians and the Cavaliers require the teams to pay for operating and maintenance costs of their respective facilities, many of the capital repair costs, as well as all of the cost of operating the Gateway Corporation. Gateway’s responsibilities – pursuant to a budget agreed upon annually with the teams and financed by team rental payments - include common area maintenance, insurance, security, and oversight of the maintenance and capital repairs of the ballpark and the arena, ensuring that Gateway’s facilities are maintained to guarantee their long-term viability. -
Castrovince | October 23Rd, 2016 CLEVELAND -- the Baseball Season Ends with Someone Else Celebrating
C's the day before: Chicago, Cleveland ready By Anthony Castrovince / MLB.com | @castrovince | October 23rd, 2016 CLEVELAND -- The baseball season ends with someone else celebrating. That's just how it is for fans of the Indians and Cubs. And then winter begins, and, to paraphrase the great meteorologist Phil Connors from "Groundhog Day," it is cold, it is gray and it lasts the rest of your life. The city of Cleveland has had 68 of those salt-spreading, ice-chopping, snow-shoveling winters between Tribe titles, while Chicagoans with an affinity for the North Siders have all been biding their time in the wintry winds since, in all probability, well before birth. Remarkably, it's been 108 years since the Cubs were last on top of the baseball world. So if patience is a virtue, the Cubs and Tribe are as virtuous as they come. And the 2016 World Series that arrives with Monday's Media Day - - the pinch-us, we're-really-here appetizer to Tuesday's intensely anticipated Game 1 at Progressive Field -- is one pitting fan bases of shared circumstances and sentiments against each other. These are two cities, separated by just 350 miles, on the Great Lakes with no great shakes in the realm of baseball background, and that has instilled in their people a common and eventually unmet refrain of "Why not us?" But for one of them, the tide will soon turn and so, too, will the response: "Really? Us?" Yes, you. Imagine what that would feel like for Norman Rosen. He's 90 years old and wise to the patience required of Cubs fandom.
