And for Jon Lester, there's no reason to panic. The Cubs believe they're starting to find the right combination after a 2-0 victory Wednesday over the defending National League Central champion Cardinals under cold and foggy conditions at Wrigley Field. "Some guys need a pat on the back," Arrieta said after pitching seven innings of three-hit ball. "Some guys need to be yelled at. I'm one of those guys who likes to be yelled at. (Montero) recognizes things in situations that I need to do differently, and it's great to have a voice like that behind the plate. We work well together." The Cubs and Castro felt the pressure of not getting a hit with runners in scoring position in their first 15 at-bats dating back to Sunday night's 3-0 loss. But Arrieta went to calm Castro after the shortstop struck out with runners at first and third base in the fourth inning. Castro responded in his next at-bat with a line-drive single to left-center field to score Anthony Rizzo and snap a scoreless tie in the seventh. "(Arrieta) is a great teammate,' Castro said. "He gives us advice, and it's really good. I said the same thing to him when they took him out of the game. We got your back." Arrieta's performance was remarkable, considering that he felt he had a lousy bullpen session, and he walked two during a 22-pitch first inning. That prompted Montero to "let him know what I think." "His stuff is too good to try to be too fine," Montero said. "He was trying to paint the corners, and he doesn't need to do that. He's too good, and I let him know, and he agreed. And after that, he was dominating." Montero believed Wednesday's victory provided a calming effect with greater expectations this season. "Everyone wants to be that hero (for) the first win, and now I'd think and hope everyone would start every game easier," Montero said. "Everyone will have to do their job, but it feels good to get the first one out of the way." Monday night, Arrieta sent a tweet to let Lester know that he would pick him up after Lester struggled to hold runners during Sunday's loss. "We're all going to struggle at times," Arrieta said. "But (Lester) has the ability to right the ship and get things back on track (in his next start), save some arms in bullpen and get us rolling again." Lester, meanwhile, said the scrutiny over him not throwing to first base since 2013 was "blown out of proportion," adding that he has no problem throwing to first and worked on it this spring. "They had me working on something different, so there's always that when you try something different, whether it's a mechanical thing or you're working on a pitch in a game, there's always that doubt," Lester said. "(When) you get comfortable with it and do it, then obviously there's no doubt anymore." -- Chicago Tribune Jake Arrieta draws comparisons to Jane Fonda By Mark Gonzales The Chicago Cubs marvel at the workout routine and overall fitness of pitcher Jake Arrieta. Manager Joe Maddon thinks so highly of Arrieta's routine that he suggested that his fit pitcher make a video that would rival the tapes of a once-popular actress. "His work is spectacular," Maddon said Wednesday after Arrieta pitched seven innings of two-hit ball in a 2-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. "If you want a good video, this guy should do the next Jane Fonda workout video on the male side of things with his leggings on. This guy’s workout is incredible." Arrieta sported a peculiar look when asked if he knew of Fonda and her fitness tapes that were popular in the early 1980s. "I’m a little more intense than that,” said Arrieta, whose spring workout routine caused several teammates and media members to stop what they were doing just so they could watch him. “I kind of make my own, really.” Catcher Miguel Montero might have summed up the intensity of Arrieta's workouts. "He’s a freak," Montero said. "He’s working out every day. I say, 'come on, really?' "That’s Jake.

  • Reign Men Taps Into a Compelling Oral History of Game 7 in the 2016 World Series
Reign Men taps into a compelling oral history of Game 7 in the 2016 World Series. Talking Cubs heads all top CSN Chicago producers need in riveting ‘Reign Men’ By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Thursday, March 23, 2017 Some of the most riveting TV can be a bunch of talking heads. The best example is enjoying multiple airings on CSN Chicago, the first at 9:30 p.m. Monday, March 27. When a one-hour documentary combines Theo Epstein and his Merry Men of Wrigley Field, who can talk as good a game as they play, with the video skills of world-class producers Sarah Lauch and Ryan McGuffey, you have a must-watch production. We all know “what” happened in the Game 7 Cubs victory of the 2016 World Series that turned from potentially the most catastrophic loss in franchise history into its most memorable triumph in just a few minutes in Cleveland. Now, thanks to the sublime re- porting and editing skills of Lauch and McGuffey, we now have the “how” and “why” through the oral history contained in “Reign Men: The Story Behind Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.” Anyone with sense is tired of the endless shots of the 35-and-under bar crowd whooping it up for top sports events. The word here is gratuitous. “Reign Men” largely eschews those images and other “color” shots in favor of telling the story. And what a tale to tell. Lauch and McGuffey, who have a combined 20 sports Emmy Awards in hand for their labors, could have simply done a rehash of what many term the greatest Game 7 in World Series history.
