Drawing on Bourdieu’s Field Theory, Even Zohar’s Polysystem Theory and DeLanda’s Assemblage Theory, it constructs a model capable of dynamically describing the life cycle of border-crossing books, from selection and production to marketing, sales and reception. This life cycle is driven and shaped by individual position-takings of book market actants, and by their complex interaction and continual evolution. The thesis thus develops an understanding of the book market and its actants that deliberately resists static or linear perspectives, acknowledging the centrality of complex interaction and dynamic development to the analysis of publishing histories of translated books. The theoretical component is complemented by case studies offering empirical insight into the model’s application. Each case study illuminates the theory from a different angle, creating thereby a composite picture of the complex, essentially unmappable processes that underlie the logic of the book market. The first takes as its subject the British publishing history of crime writer Liza Marklund, as well as its wider context, the Scandinavian crime boom.

RSU International Research Conference 2020 https://rsucon.rsu.ac.th/proceedings 1 MAY 2020 A Study of Figurative Language in Academy Award Acceptance Speeches Vorapon Mahakaew Faculty of Liberal Arts, Rangsit University, Pathum Thani, Thailand Corresponding author, E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The objective of this research was to analyze the figurative language in the Academy Award acceptance speeches. According to the principles of qualitative investigation, this study applied a descriptive and interpretative method of content analysis (Miles and Huberman, 1994; Strauss and Corbin, 1998). In the study, the source of data comes from the Academy Award acceptance speeches. Thirty-one speeches from 2004 to 2013 have been chosen for the analysis using seven types of figurative language: climax, hyperbole, hypophora, irony, metaphor, oxymoron, and simile. The theoretical concepts that guided the framework of investigation in this study are related to figurative language. The frequencies of the types of figure of speech were then examined and presented in percentage form. The connotations that were interpreted from the figures of speech were derived into common themes. The results revealed that hyperbole is the most found type of figurative language, using 18 times in 16 speeches. Metaphor holds the second spot for using 16 times in 14 speeches while simile is undiscovered. Following the metaphor is irony with 14 times of usage in nine speeches. Moreover, climax, hypophora, and oxymoron are also found in the study. Keywords: Figurative language, Speech 1. Heck, they even gave out Academy Awards during each year of the Great Depression. But the way Madison Avenue is behaving toward the 81st annual Academy Awards, to be broadcast by ABC Ttoday [tomorrow Taiwan time], one could be excused for believing that the ceremony was actually for the Razzie Awards, which mock the worst Hollywood movies. Several Oscar sponsors from last year — among them General Motors, L’Oreal and the Bertolli food line sold by Unilever — are forgoing the program. Other brands like Philadelphia cream cheese, sold by Kraft Foods, and the Culver’s fast-food chain are running commercials in shows before the ceremony, some on networks like E! rather than ABC. And many marketers that bought commercial time during the Oscars are behaving as if they had been placed in the witness protection program, declining to identify themselves or discuss their ad plans before the show. That behavior is of course related to the economy, as consumers change their attitude toward conspicuous displays of spending. Something similar happened before Super Bowl XLIII on Feb. 1 as several sponsors of the NBC coverage toned down or eliminated the pregame publicity for their commercials. Executives at ABC, part of Walt Disney Co, are taking a cue from the silent sponsors. In recent years, network officials talked to reporters before each show to discuss demand and rates for commercial time. This week, no one from ABC was available for such interviews.
