Nano・Picometer Measurement and Control Laboratory Mechanical Engineering 1 Nano・picometer measurement and control laboratory Professor / Masato AKETAGAWA Assistant Professor / Wei DONG Technical Staff / Masahiro YOSHIDA http://mcweb.nagaokaut.ac.jp/~picotech/ Can not make things that can not be measured. We are conducting ultra precision measurement using light (laser). A laboratory that respects the autonomy of students, it is a very free laboratory. Professor / Masato AKETAGAWA, Assistant Professor / Wei DONG Supervisor Professor Aketagawa has the experience of being a researcher at a company. Therefore, he has wide and deep knowledge about optical measurement technology. We encourage students to study in abroad, respecting our independence, and leading research with precise advice.Assistant Professor Wei always provide us various topics not only also a campus life. Research Content Mechanical In our laboratory we are researching ultra precision measurement system using leaser. We aim to contribute to the development of nanotechnology by considering a method of precision measurement, precision control and precision processing in nano (1 / billionth ) pico (1 / trillion) meter Electrical order. [1] Frequency stabilization and displacement measurement of 780nm DBR laser diode. [2]Ultra precision measurement of refractive index of air. [3] Measurement of motion error of bearing: Precise measurement of all 5 degrees of freedom bearing error by all simultaneously. Appearance of improved linear scale Materials [4]Length measurement with optical comb. calibrator A Day in the Lab Civil In our laboratory,no core time, and students has a great responsbility for a management of there resaech. Some people come early in the morning and are studying, others are still late at night. The seminars that are held twice a week are seminars progress seminar and paper seminar. At the progress seminar, we will briefly explain the progress of the research in shearing the lab menbers. In the magazine seminar, We read English articles related to research and Bioengineering deepen their understanding. The student room is large and has a comvinient facilities such as air conditioning, cooking utensils, coffee makers, etc. For lunch and dinner, we will go to the 1st dining hall and occasionally a cafe "popai". Throughout the year, there are various events such as a BBQ with a lab member welcome party for newcomers, fireworks festival, year-end party, etc. we would like to have more events in this fiscal Management year‼ Thesis Subjects (M) Applications of variable length vacuum chamber and phase modulation interferometer to Nuclear Safety mesurement of air refractive index (M) Direct phase determination method for sinusoidal frequency modulation displacement measuring interferometer (D) Sinusoidal frequency modulation for concurrently achieving iodine-frequency-stabilized laser diode ande high-precision displacement-measuring interferometer Innovation Major employers of Graduates ROHM Co., Ltd. Experiment ! Analysis ! Evaluation ! Students research independently ! Professor / Shigeru NAGASAWA, Assistant Professor / Kazuki UMEMOTO Supervisor Dr. Nagasawa specializes in plastic processing of paperboard and resin films. His research contributes to industry of them. He respects independency of students. Dr. Umemoto is mainly research regarding multi-legged robot using flexible actuator and robust stability of non-liner systems. He is also very kind, so you can whatever you want to them‼ Mechanical Research Content Products such as box for snack, liquid containers, crystal display are made by punching die processing. In this processing, the outbreak that has poor cutting becomes the problem. Conditions for processing is empirically determined Electrical by each producer. Therefore, we try to improve them by evaluating and developing processing method. For example, we study about cutting properties and folding properties of cardboard and the resin at the time of punching die processing in this laboratory. Materials In additon to our experimental room, we have cutting RP processing machine and 3D printer. A Day in the Lab Civil The student study at their own pace. The atmosphere in the laboratory is friendly, so we can share not only research but also daily life. Since there are many foreign students, we can get a lot of opportunity to share cultures and to talk in English. We have two seminars a week. In the seminar, we report Bioengineering present status and progress of each study to our teachers and revise the directionality of the study. I think that you can enjoy the student life other than the study enough if you can push forward your study premeditatedly and properly. We hold annual training camp for research in September Management Thesis Subjects Nuclear Safety (M) Effects of blade tip angle on crack propagation of thermal-printed paper subjected to indentation of side-beveled tooth-like blade. He cared for student, so you can well have advice on your study. And you can have suggestion of study conference in japan or other country. It is considered on your progress, so you don't worry about conference presentation. Research Content Mechanical In order to control objects, we need to modeling the object, but if we include the sound and wave medium in the controlled object, it will be difficult to make an accurate model. However, by using robust control theory, it becomes possible to design a stable control system even for controlled objects that are difficult to model. J. Drexel Nanotechnology Institute, Drexel University High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron ener- gy loss spectroscopy (EELS), supported by TEM simulation, show the presence of water in carbon nanotubes (CNT) subjected to hydrothermal treatment. It was observed that water behaves differently in the channels of CNT with different inner diameters. In large CNT (50 - 200 nm in diameter) water behaves fairly con- ventionally, showing a well-defined meniscus. Rapid evaporation and condensa- tion upon the intensity change of electron beam, as well as strong interaction between nanotube walls and water, have been observed. Water in small CNT with inner diameter of 2 - 5 nm shows a surprisingly high contrast in HRTEM images. Fluidity of water in such small channels is greatly retarded compared to Contents the macroscale. • Seattle Wide-Area Information for Travelers Field Operational Test
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The SWIFT (Seattle Wide-area Information For Travelers) Field Operational Test was intended to evaluate the performance of a large-scale urban Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) deployment in the Seattle area. The unique features of the SWIFT ATIS were the provision of information for multiple transportation modes, the delivery of this information using three different devices, and the use of the FM sideband as the primary communication medium. A total of approximately 800 system users were recruited during the course of the study. The SWIFT Architecture Study is one of five component studies to the overall system evaluation. This report details the results of the SWIFT Architecture Study based on the evaluation objectives that were initially identified in the SWIFT Architecture Study test plan (1996). Specifically, four evaluation objectives are identified in the SWIFT Architecture Study test plan. The first two of these objectives relate to the system performance when the system is operating according to its functional specifications, and is essentially free of any component failures. In contrast, the third and fourth objectives focus on what happens when part of the system becomes unavailable due to system component failures. For each of these conditions, the performance of the architecture will be examined from both the user (objectives 1 and 3) and system (objectives 2 and 4) perspective. In evaluating these four objectives, the SWIFT Architecture Study not only attempts to establish the consistency of user perceptions with the actual system performance, but also attempts to identify the operational characteristics of the system that were not recognized by the SWIFT field operational test participants.
