We have received more than 500 submissions, of which some 300 made it to the programme, together with four outstanding keynote speakers. This Conference consolidates the increasing participation of Spanish delegates in previous conferences since the creation of the Spanish branch of IASPM in 1999, and reinforces the presence of Popular Music Studies at the Spanish universities and research groups. The University of Oviedo is one of the pioneer institutions in the Study of Popular Music in Spain; since the late nineties, this field of study is constantly growing due to the efforts of scholars and students that approach this repertoire from an interdisciplinary perspective. As for the place that hosts the conference, Gijón is an industrial city with an important music scene. I wouldn´t call it the Spanish Liverpool, but some critics called it the Spanish Seattle because it was an important place for the development of “noise music” in Spain during the 1990s. The venue, Laboral, is an exponent of the architecture of the dictatorship. Finished in 1956, it was conceived as a school for war orphans to learn a trade and in 2007 it was remodeled to become a “city for culture”.

Do zostavy pribudli dvaja noví členovia – Oystein Moen a Stian Westerhus a všetci odišli pilova ť nový materiál do švédskych lesov. Oproti predchádza-júcim nahrávkam je variabilnejší a otvorenejší. Henryk Górecki, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, Steve Reich alebo Jóhann Jóhannsson, pokojom a šarmom zase pripomína pokojnejšie polohy kapiel typu Sigur Rós či Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Marxian critiques of what ‘is’, together with normative, socialist visions of what ‘ought’ to be, are reviewed with reference to radio’s listening subjects and broadcasting ideals. Arguably, popular musics embraced by radio only offer a dystopian standardisation for a mass audience. However, it is mooted here that socio cultural knowledges mediated by a public service broadcaster can contribute p o sitiv ely to a subject’s negotiation of modernity and the objective world.

Rex was at the screaming height of post Beatle teen pop mania. But that wasn’t quite the whole story. In his lust for glory, the self-mythmaking Bolan had been on the road seven years as a pop art mod, a Dylanesque folk rocker, a whimsical away- with-the-fairy’s acoustic balladeer and psychedelic astral ensemble hippy before he struck chart Gold with his nursery rhyme space age electric boogie. He had 10 top five singles (including four number ones) in the space of two and a half years, and then it all faded away. When his elegiac epic of youthful fantasy, Teenage Dream, stalled at number 13 in February 1974, the female backing singers refrain “Whatever happened to the teenage dream?” made it sound as if they were bidding adieu to Bolan himself.

  • Internationale Coöperation Canterbury Festival and Londen 2019 Frisian Symphonic Wind Orchestra
Internationale Coöperation Canterbury Festival and Londen 2019 Frisian Symphonic Wind Orchestra The Frisian Symphonic Wind Orchestra (FSWO) is one of the main fanfare orchestras of the Netherlands, which has been under the musical leadership of conductor Jouke Hoekstra since it’s foundation. The orchestra consists of approximately 65 ambitious musicians, varying from ambitious amateurs to conservatory students and some professionals. The FSWO has taken part in many festivals and competitions, for example in Portugal, Singapore, Eastern Europe, America, invariably winning a first prize. Highlights in the orchestra’s history are its winning of first prize at the World Music Contest for several times in the highest division (1989,1993,1995,1999,2003). The FSWO has an impressive number of CD releases and has made many recordings for radio and television programs. In 1991 the FSWO has been awarded with a cultural prize from the province of Friesland: “De Zilveren Anjer”. Furthermore, the FSWO has realised projects in cooperation with different artforms, musical partners and soloists over the world. The main goal of the Frisian Symphonic Wind Orchestra is to promote the fanfare orchestra in general as well as the music that is especially written for such an orchestra. Therefore, the FSWO has focused on performing original contemporary music for fanfare ever since the orchestra has been founded. This means that the main source of repertoire for our concerts is from Dutch composers. Participation at international festivals is of great importance for the FSWO in order to expose and promote the colourful sound of the fanfare orchestra and to attract foreign composers to the sounds of the symphonic wind orchestra.
