Sermons Te Shepherds Saw God’Ssermons Glory Luke 2.1-20 Rev Dr Jos M Sermons Te Shepherds saw God’sSermons Glory Luke 2.1-20 Rev Dr Jos M. Strengholt It was night in Bethlehem, and in the felds outside the village the shepherds tried to stay awake in order to guard their sheep. Tese sheep belonged to the temple in Jerusalem - they were raised for being used as sacrifces in the liturgy of Israel. So the shepherds had to be extra careful that nothing happened. Tey had to ensure that every sheep would be in perfect shape - to be sacrifced. Te shepherds did not know that in the small city of Bethlehem, Jesus was born. But an angel came to tell them. Tis was so totally unexpected! Te thick darkness and quiet of the night was pierced by the appearance of an angel. When the angel came, the glory of the Lord shone around them. 1. Great fear Te shepherds were terrifed when an angel appeared to them. It was not just the appearance of an angel - that must be awe-inspiring enough; it probably did not often happen to them. But it was the glory of the Lord that shone around them, that truly frightened them. Te glory of God was not just the brightness of the angel. It was much more meaningful and more frightening than the appearance of the angel. When Moses led the tribes of Israel out of Egypt, back to the promised land, the Glory of the Lord was visible to Israel in the form of a pillar of cloud and fre. Te glory of the Lord - that was how Israel spoke of the amazing impact of the personal presence of God in their history. It was how God appeared on Mount Sinai when he gave Israel the 10 commandments, in fre, and smoke and thunder. Ten, for 400 years or so, God was present in the midst of Israel in the tabernacle. Te Glory shown over the tent of the tabernacle. Heliopolis 2015; AN 2018 1 And for another 400 years the Glory shown over Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem. But then, because of its sins, Judah wasSermons taken into captivity. Ezekiel saw in a vision the pillar of fre, the symbol of God's presence, rise up and leave the temple. God was no longer in the land, so to say. And when Israel built its new temple - the one that the shepherds could almost see in the distance by daytime - that temple was gorgeous but the glory of God had never returned to it. Where was God? It seemed that God had left the land. And now after so many centuries of darkness God in his Glory appeared to the shepherds. He bypassed the temple of the establishment, but he returned to Israel by frst showing himself to the despised shepherds. Needless to say, this awesome display of God's presence was frightening to these Shepherds, people who were not considered worthy of even entering the temple. Because of their vocation, shepherds were considered unclean and could not take part in temple worship without ritual cleansing. Tey were despised by the people, considered untrustworthy, and unable to testify in a court of law. Tey were an example of the outcasts that Jesus came to save. God revealed the birth of Jesus Christ frst to the shepherds. He chose those who are despised, the poor, the rejected. To them he makes himself known. As he wants to be known by us. You are very special people - and God wants to show his glory to you. He wants to be Emmanuel, God with us. And like the shepherds, we do not need to fear. 2. Great joy Fear not, the angel said to the shepherds, because ‘I bring you good news of a great joy for all the people.’ Great fear can be replaced by great joy. Te Shepherds were certainly joyful after they listened to the word of God spoken by the angel, and even more when they found the baby in the manger, exactly as the angel had predicted. True joy transcends circumstances; even when we are sufering, we can have joy in our hearts. We may feel pain in the members of our bodies, but we can have joy in our inner being. Te opposite also happens. We may have great circumstances, but inside, we are hurting. As Christians we often fail to experience joy. Sometimes we get so caught up in the 2 issues of life that we forget to rejoice in the Lord and what he has done for us. Tis is why St Paul commands us once Sermonsand again in his letter to Philippians to rejoice in the Lord always. We can choose to let Christ be our joy, to let Him give us joy. Sure, we may try to manufacture our own joy, which will not last and will fail. Te Christmas joy is over for most people when the Christmas tree goes back into the box. Only when we fnd our happiness in the person of Jesus can we experience true and lasting joy. We may be sad because of the circumstances of our world and of our lives - and experience his comfort and joy at the same time. Jesus says to his followers, in John 15:11, “Tese things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.” Jesus reminds us: we will not have fullness of joy unless we listen to him as his followers. Te angel said to the shepherds that the good news of great joy is for all people. Tis means, it is also for us. If you live your life in fear of darkness, of death, fear of people, fear of sickness, fear of God, then the angel has a message for you today as well. You can have great joy. Because you have a great saviour 3. Great Saviour Te good news for the shepherds is that a baby is born, a baby who is a Saviour, Christ the Lord. Even before His birth, Jesus had brought joy, as Mary his mother sang in her song “and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,” (Luke 1.47) And John the Baptist, when he was still in the womb of his mother Elisabeth, ‘leaped for joy’ when Mary told Elisabeth that she would have a baby. (Luke 1.44). God does not have to frighten you - he can give you great joy. But for receiving this joy, we have to go to God himself as he revealed himself in Jesus the Saviour, the Christmas baby. Imagine - God being born in our dark world. But he decided to do this and he did this so that all people can meet with him, and communicate with him, and so that this world will one day be right on its feet again. 3 How we need this in our days... today almost 70 million people are adrift as refugees.Sermons A higher fgure than ever in history. Many of our own families have great needs. Life is short and hard for many. As far as I know, according to most statistics, all people eventually die. But in the midst of this, God tells us - do not fear, have great joy - by looking at the Christmas child. He is our saviour. He connects us with God, the source of goodness and of life. He brings us back to the heart of God the Father. Let us in the year ahead, focus a lot on the mercy of God; He is not scary, but he brings us joy. He began doing this with Christmas, by showing Jesus Christ to the shepherds. And he desires to do the same to you and I today. If we look at the child born with Christmas, and believe that he is the one who brings us back to God - then our joy wil be great. Conclusion May I suggest that as we participate in holy eucharist today, you look at him - with the eyes of your mind; and that you express to him your desire for this great joy while you go to the table, while you partake of the body and blood of Christ. Tis Christmas can be a time of joy for us - with family, with friends, but it can be a time of much greater joy if we allow Jesus Christ to be the center of our heart and mind. Where he is, he gives great joy. It is not that complicated. Ask him, and he will give. If he is in your life, the joy comes with him. May God bless you as you seek his child - Jesus Christ the Saviour. Have a merry christmas, full of great joy. + Amen 4.

Without guidance, this is usually impossible. Therefore, lowe my biggest thanks to Peter and Laura Yorke of Ra Horakhty Temple, who provided my first exposure to self-initiation techniques in the Golden Dawn. Their years of expe rience with the Golden Dawn material yielded a structure of carefully selected ex ercises, which their students still use today to bring about a gradual transformation. WIthout such well-prescribed use of the Golden Dawn's techniques, it would have been difficult to make progress in its grade system. The basic structure of the course in this book is built on a foundation of the Golden Dawn's elemental grade system as my teachers passed it on. In particular, it develops further their choice to use the color correspondences of the Four Worlds, a piece of the original Golden Dawn system that very few occultists have recognized as an ini tiatory tool.

Or do I want to trust Jesus, who told Thomas, "Blessed are they who have not seen and have be- lieved." WOMEN IN THE HOLINESS MOVEMENT Introduction We seek to uncover in this paper the important role of women within early Holiness traditions. We concentra~e on outstanding women within the movement and on various defenses of their right to be leaders and preachers. This is just the beginning of the research that needs to be done. A more comprehensive study would include a statistical analysis of women ministers in the early-Holiness traditions as compar.ed to now. It would more carefully discuss the opposition women ministers faced, and it would seek to discover reasons for the decline 'of the participation of women within the Holiness traditions in recent years. We begin this paper with a discussion of the role of women in early Methodism in England. We then notice the influence of revivalist Finney and Oberlin College on woman's participation in early revival ism. We see the conjoining of Methodism an~Revivalsim in Phoebe Palmer and her followers. We discuss Maggie Van Cott, the first , woman licensed to preach in the Methodist Church, and other women preachers and writers of the mid-lqth century. We examine the 'Holiness literature as it speaks about woman's role and we trace the influence of women in several Holiness denominations.

  • The Glory in the Rear No
Sermon #1793 Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit 1 THE GLORY IN THE REAR NO. 1793 A SERMON DELIVERED ON LORD’S-DAY MORNING, AUGUST 3, 1884, BY C. H. SPURGEON, AT THE METROPOLITAN TABERNACLE, NEWINGTON. “And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: and it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.” Exodus 14:19-20. “The glory of the LORD shall be thy rearward.” Isaiah 58:8. “For the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rearward.” Isaiah 52:12. WHEN the Israelites left the place of their bondage and came to the edge of the wilderness, a visible token of the Lord’s presence and leadership was granted to them. They saw high in the air a pillar, which by day might be compared to rising smoke, but at night became a flame of fire. Such displays on a small scale were usual in the march of armies, but this was of supernatural origin. Where it moved, the people were to follow, it was to be their companion, that they might not be alone, their conductor, that they might not go astray. We have become familiar, by accounts of our own soldiers in Egypt, with the extreme danger of the oriental sun when men are marching over the fiery sand, this cloud would act as a vast umbrella tent, covering the whole of the great congregation, so that they could march without being faint with the heat.

FEATURES Science and the Miracles of Exodus Colin Humphreys, Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy, University of Cambridge- Cambridge, UK id Moses and the Israelites really cross the Red Sea? If so, can physics explain how? Is it physically possible to obtain water Dfrom a rock? Is there a scientific mechanism underlying the crossing of the River Jordan? How can a mountain like Mount Sinai emit a sound like a trumpet? At first sight, these miracles in the biblical story of the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt over 3000 years ago seem incredible. Because they appear to violate the normal running of the natural world, many scientists are scep tical that they could have happened. However, is it true that the well-known miracles mentioned above violate the normal run ning of the natural world? In this article I will take a closer look at some of the Exodus miracles through the eyes of a scientist. Water from a rock The miracle of obtaining water from a rock is described in just two verses in the Old Testament book of Exodus: “The Lord said to Moses ‘Take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.’ So Moses did this in the sign of the elders of Israel” (Exodus 17:5-6). What a curious incident! Obtaining water from a rock would seem to be like obtaining blood from a stone: impossible.

Doing theology is different from weighing history or deciding doctrine. Theology speculates. It experiments with questions and advances hypotheses. It tests new angles and pulls loose threads. The Mormon Theology Seminar organizes interdisciplin- ary, collaborative, theological readings of Latter-day Saint scripture. Seminar participants with diverse backgrounds closely explore familiar texts in creative ways. In partner- ship with the Laura F. Willes Center for Book of Mormon Studies at the Neal A. • ADVENT- CHRISTMAS WORDS of HOPE: Come, Lord Jesus, Come! Fire Has Long Been a Sign of God’S Presence
ADVENT- CHRISTMAS WORDS OF HOPE: Come, Lord Jesus, come! Fire has long been a sign of God’s presence. The Old Testament is full of examples: the burning bush on Mount Sinai, the pillar of fire in the desert, the tabernacle lamps, and the sacrificial fires on the altar. Early Christians naturally viewed fire as a symbol of the presence of their resurrected Lord, the new pillar of fire. For us, the light symbolizes Christ’s triumph over the darkness of sin and death, bringing HOPE. CHRIST CANDLE The Light of Christ. Thanks be to God! It is the beautiful task of Advent to awaken in all of us memories of goodness and thus to open the doors of hope. ~Pope Benedict XVI This candle is lit every week. As we light this candle, we remember and we rejoice in the birth of Jesus, while we wait for Jesus’ return. We worship him. We welcome him. We make room for him in our hearts. O come, let us adore him. God’s Word from John 1: In the beginning was the Word; and the Word was God… The LIGHT shines in the darkness; and the darkness did not overcome it. ADVENT PRAYER Lord Jesus, master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas. We, who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day. We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us. We, who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.

  • St Thomas Episcopal Church Life of Christ Icons Manual
St Thomas Episcopal Church Life of Christ Icons Manual Prepared during Advent 2014 by Rhonda Kindig Revised 2015 Introduction to the Icon Tour Welcome to St Thomas! Thank you for your interest in our icon. ICON is just the Greek word for IMAGE. This style of art is known as BYZANTINE, a name that comes from the Eastern Roman Empire, which lasted from about 300 to 1450 AD. The name is from the city of Byzantium, located on the Black Sea; today we know it as Istanbul. Icons are considered HOLY OBJECTS in the Orthodox Churches, such as the Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Eastern Orthodox. For them, the images are on equal footing with the words of scripture. In fact, the people who make the icons are not called painters but ICON-WRITERS. Just as the Holy Bible is revered by Christians, icons are also venerated in Orthodox Churches. In fact, an Orthodox community regards the icons as members of their community at prayer! This church, St Thomas, is an Episcopal Church; we are Protestant and not Catholic or Orthodox. We find them lovely for teaching purposes, but we do not venerate them. Because the Orthodox tradition views an icon as equal to Scripture, faithful icon-writers must match the form and content of the icons to original models approved by the Orthodox tradition! Essentially, icons must be “copied” from authorized versions, some centuries old! The subject of an icon must be an event from the Bible or a holy person. Icon-writing is not supposed to show artistic imagination or creativity; it is supposed to show discipline.

  • THE DWELLING PLACE of GOD by AW Tozer
MAN - THE DWELLING PLACE OF GOD by A. W. Tozer 1 PREFACE The supremest interest in the life of A. W. Tozer was God: He who spoke and brought the world into being, Who justly rules over men and nations, yet deigns to make man His dwelling place. He believed that all that really matters is for man to be in right relationship with God, that his first duty, and privilege, is “to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” For this reason he delighted to speak to men of God’s majesty and wonder and grace and he ever sought to instruct and exhort Christians to let this be the purpose of their lives. He grieved that they should be content with less. Nothing he preached or wrote was merely academic or theoretical. What he said about God came out of many hours spent in His presence and with His Word. What he wrote about men was what he knew of his own heart and observed in others. With the Spirit’s anointing came discernment; perception and clarity issued out of a disciplined mind. A broad knowledge averted dullness, and a lively wit brought freshness. The chapters in this book deal with many aspects of one subject: the relationship of God and man. They are above all practical and all who read them will profit. Anita M.
