High of 68. Winds NE 10-20 mph. Brian Gay birdied five consecutive holes (Nos. 4-8) on his way to a 5-under 66 and a one-stroke lead over Todd Hamilton (66). It was the best birdie-streak at the Verizon Heritage since Boo Weekley birdied the same five holes in round three in 2008. Brian Gay is making his 10 th start at Harbour Town, with three previous made cuts (T42-2001, T9-2006, T16- 2007). So far this season, the 2008 Mayakoba Golf Classic champion has made 10 cuts in 11 starts, with a T5 at the Sony Open in Hawaii his best of five top-25 finishes. He is currently No. 29 on the FedExCup points list. The second-round lead is the second of Brian Gay’s career. His first came at the 2001 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, when he shared the lead with Phil Mickelson on the way to a T5 finish. This is the 13 th straight year that the Verizon Heritage has produced an outright second-round leader. The last time there were co-leaders through 36 holes was in 1996 when Jeff Sluman and Tom Watson shared the lead at 6- under. In the 41-year history of the event, there have been co-leaders after two rounds just 11 times.

  • History & Honour Roll –
History & Honour Roll – Australian Men’s Interstate Teams Matches History The first Australian Men’s Interstate Teams Matches was played in 1904 between NSW and Victoria. Seven players contested one match each with NSW winning 5-2. The second championship was played between Victoria, South Australia and NSW, while the 1906 championship was played between Victoria, NSW and a combined Tasmania and Queensland team. It was not until 1946 that all states contested the event. That year the Western Australian Golf Association presented the perpetual Interstate Shield. This shield was presented to the winning team until it was retired in 2002 due to lack of engraving space. The replacement Interstate Teams Trophy is still in use today. Initially, the Interstate Teams Matches were played as part of a carnival of events alongside the Australian Open, the Australian Amateur and the Australian Foursomes Championships. As times changed the amateur events split from the open/professional events and eventually in 1994, the Teams Matches split from the Amateur Championship. In 2004 the Interstate Teams Matches was played as part of a carnival of events that also included the Interstate Colts Teams Matches (for players aged 18-23 years) and the Australian Foursomes Championship. From inception the format has been seven representatives from each state playing singles matches against all other states. In 1984 foursomes matches were added, but after 2011 the foursomes matches were removed. The format reversed to each team contesting singles matches only. Since 2012, at the conclusion of the singles rounds, teams one and two play each other in a final to determine the winning team.

  • Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf
COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf Jeffrey Paadre This paper examines 10 years worth of PGA Tour Tournament data in order to examine whether or not clutch performance exists during the final round of a tournament. After controlling scores for differences in course difficulty, the paper finds no evidence of tangible clutch performance. The authors find that the perception of clutch performance is more likely attributable to talent differential between golfers. Assuming a normal distribution of golfer talent, it is possible that Tiger Woods can outshoot his opponents on the final day of a tournament as well as lose his lead to his competitors. Motivation and Literature In professional sports, heroes can be created through the concept of clutch performance. The perception of clutch performance occurs when an athlete raises his or her performance to an extraordinary level during the most important moments of a sporting event. Athletes such as David Ortiz and Adam Vinatieri have been immortalized as legends due to their consistent ability to help their teams win baseball and football games during important games where the outcome was hanging in the balance. Conversely Bill Buckner and Scott Norwood are amongst the unfortunate athletes burdened with reputations as choke artists based on their inability to perform well when their teams needed a high performance the most. One of the challenges that accompanies examining performance under pressure lies within trying to define which performances constitute clutch performance. For example, in 2005 John Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, presented David Ortiz with a plaque inscribed “David Ortiz: The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox”.
