ABSTRACT x Master´s thesis Licentiate´s thesis Doctor´s thesis Subject International Business Date 07.05.2008 Student number Author(s) Kukka Tamminen Number of pages 109 Title Bidding for the Olympics – a place marketing perspective Supervisor(s) Ph.D. Kari Liuhto, M.Sc. Jenni Jaakkola Abstract The Olympic Games are the largest global event that has brought each hosting city to global awareness together with major economic benefits. In bidding for the Olympics, the seller is a national Olympic committee that sets a city as a candidate. The buyer is the International Olympic Committee formed of 115 members that vote for the winner after an 18 months campaigning. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the Helsinki 2006 Olympic bid process from a place marketing perspective. The main objective of the research is divided into three sub-objectives based on the theory: 1) To find out the main objective for bidding. 2) To find out how place marketing was implemented in the Helsinki 2006 –bid process. 3) To evaluate the success factors of Helsinki 2006 –bid process. The study shows that practices of place marketing were implemented while creating the marketing of Helsinki 2006. The main objective for the bid was to organise the best ever Winter Olympic Games and invite the sports youth of the world to compete in a country, where organising skills and spirit for sport are incomparable. The success factors chosen by the bid committee were not successful as the bid was not won. Although the bid organisation succeeded in creating the right image of Helsinki and Finland, it had no influence on the final decision.

Interview My diary is in my work, my music Weinberg through the eyes of Tommy Persson By Henny van der Groep or many years Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919–1996) was one of the more neglected com- Fposers in the Soviet Union. One of the underlying causes was the solitary life he led combined with a reticence to promote his work. Weinberg was a modest human being, and for a long time his skill as composer was over- shadowed by that of Shostakovich, who nonetheless wholly appreciated Weinberg as a colleague and friend. • 2002 Transformation Plan
Transformation Plan April 2002 United States Postal Service Transformation Plan Message from the Chairman of the Board, Robert F. Rider, and Postmaster General & CEO, John E. Potter. The Postal Service is delivering on its commitment to the Senate and the House of Representatives to develop a comprehensive Transformation Plan. The Congress’s recognition of and concern for the seriousness of the situation facing the Postal Service has been most encouraging to the Governors and postal management. Successful transformation will require strong and committed leadership from the Governors, the Postmaster General and all postal employees. Working together with our many stakeholders, including the executive and legislative branches, we will forge a new and modern business model for an institution that has served this country and evolved with changing times since 1789. We recognize our responsibility to take definitive action and to offer the citizens of America a clear and compelling view of current and planned actions, and our vision of where we are headed. At the same time we want and encourage all our stakeholders to remain actively engaged in discussions about postal issues and the Postal Service's future. To that end, we call your attention not only to the Executive Summary, but to all the supporting materials, especially the appendices. These sections provide the detailed information that will enable further dialogue and understanding. This Transformation Plan is about enabling the Postal Service to successfully carry out its long-standing mission of providing affordable universal service. It is about maintaining a fundamental principle and vision that delivery of mail is an important and vital government service, regardless of where one lives or what one’s station in life might be.
