    War Memorials in Cumbria Copeland p 1 Allerdale p 12 South Lakeland and Furness p 26 Eden p 50 Carlisle and north Cumbria p 64 Copeland ULPHA & DUDDON VALLEY There are no war memorials in this area, at Broughton Mills, Seathwaite and Ulpha-they are covered by the Broughton-in-Furness memorial. Ulpha lost at least one man-Albert Askew of KORL, died 2/9/1916 Seathwaite lost at least one man-John H Tyson of Welsh Fusiliers, died 26/5/1917 THWAITES, THE GREEN & THE HILL Thwaites Village- in Churchyard- 3 Photographs & Transcription attached. This is unusual as it was built with a metal plaque on the road side of the memorial. That is still there but at a much later date a slate plaque was added on the churchyard side. This is now the side which is used, the metal plaque is neglected, due to road safety reasons. Can anyone help please? 2 Editorial A few weeks after this Newsletter is out, the book Wordsworth and the famous Lorton yew tree should be published. This is a book about the tree itself and the Wordsworth connection comes in because it will be 200 years ago in September that William and his sister Dorothy visited the tree which led to the famous poem. The editors of the book are Derek Denman and Michael Baron and Michael has carried out a lot of research into the Wordsworth side of the story, helped by the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere. Derek has investigated the history of the tree - following up on Ron George’s previous work - and, at the recent AGM in June, they both gave a presentation of some of their findings. Michael suggested to me that the results of his research could be printed in the Newsletter and, now that my arm has recovered, I’m pleased to say that the first part starts in this issue, written in Michael’s entertaining and personal style. And so we say farewell (do you remember those James A Fitzpatrick [was it?] travelogues at the cinema?) to Mockerkin School, or rather I should say that we have the last part of Walter Head’s article on the school, along with a very sad picture of the old school building as it is today.

    Cumbria Classified (A,B & C) Roads - Published January 2021 • The list has been prepared using the available information from records compiled by the County Council and is correct to the best of our knowledge. It does not, however, constitute a definitive statement as to the status of any particular highway. • This is not a comprehensive list of the entire highway network in Cumbria although the majority of streets are included for information purposes. • The extent of the highway maintainable at public expense is not available on the list and can only be determined through the search process. • The List of Streets is a live record and is constantly being amended and updated. We update and republish it every 3 months. • Like many rural authorities, where some highways have no name at all, we usually record our information using a road numbering reference system. Street descriptors will be added to the list during the updating process along with any other missing information. • The list does not contain Recorded Public Rights of Way as shown on Cumbria County Council’s 1976 Definitive Map, nor does it contain streets that are privately maintained. • The list is property of Cumbria County Council and is only available to the public for viewing purposes and must not be copied or distributed.     Mapping the Late Medieval and Post Medieval Landscape of Cumbria Two Volumes Volume 1: Text Caron Egerton Newman Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of History, Classics and Archaeology Newcastle University Submitted: June 2014 Abstract This study is an analysis of the development of rural settlement patterns and field systems in Cumbria from the later medieval period through to the late eighteenth century. It uses documentary, cartographic and archaeological evidence. This evidence is interpreted utilising the techniques of historic landscape characterisation (HLC), map regression and maps created by the author, summarising and synthesising historical and archaeological data. The mapped settlement data, in particular, has been manipulated using tools of graphic analysis available within a Graphical Information System (GIS). The initial product is a digital map of Cumbria in the late eighteenth century, based on the county-scale maps of that period, enhanced with information taken from enclosure maps and awards, and other post medieval cartographic sources. From this baseline, an interpretation of the late medieval landscape was developed by adding information from other data sources, such as place names and documentary evidence. The approach was necessarily top-down and broad brush, in order to provide a landscape-scale, sub-regional view. This both addresses the deficiencies within the standard historical approach to landscape development, and complements such approaches. Standard historical approaches are strong on detail, but can be weak when conclusions based on localised examples are extrapolated and attributed to the wider landscape. The methodology adopted by this study allows those local analyses to be set within a broader landscape context, providing another tool to use alongside more traditional approaches to historic landscape studies.
