L. els son' Several works on the order Coleoptera have appeared in recent years, some of them creating new superfamilies, others modifying the constitution of these or creating new families, finally others are genera1 revisions of the order. The authors believe that the current classification of this order, incorporating these changes would prove useful. The following outline is based mainly on Crowson (1960, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1973) and Crowson and Viedma (1964). For characters used on classification see Viedma (1972) and for family synonyms Abdullah (1969). Major features of this conspectus are the rejection of the two sections of Adephaga (Geadephaga and Hydradephaga), based on Bell (1966) and the new sequence of Heteromera, based mainly on Crowson (1966), with adaptations.

The fauna of aquatic and semi-aquatic beetles (Coleoptera) from northwestern Iran is studied in this paper. Totally 28 species from 5 families, Dytiscidae (16 species, 11 genera), Haliplidae (2 species, 2 genera), Helophoridae (3 species, 1 genus), Hydrophilidae (6 species, 6 genera) and Noteridae (1 species, 1 genus), were collected and identified. Four species Agabus (Gaurodytes) didymus (Olivier 1795), Hydroporus bodemeyeri Ganglbauer 1900, Nebrioporus (Nebrioporus) suavis (Sharp 1882) (Dytiscidae) and Helophorus griseus Herbst 1793 (Helophoridae) are new records for the fauna of Iran. A provisional larval groundplan of the family Hygrobiidae is provided through descriptions of internal and external fea- tures of three of six extant species, Hygrobia hermanni (Fabricius, 1775), H. wattsi Hendrich 2001 and H. australasiae (Clark, 1862) and phylogenetic interpretations. Hygrobiidae larvae are morphologically differing dramatically from all other known Adephaga by 20 autapomorphies. Structures involved with feeding, i.e., mouthparts, prepharynx and foregut are highly modified as a result of a specialisation on small tubificid worms and chironomid larvae. A placement of Hygrobiidae within Dytiscoidea is well supported by the reduced condition of the terminal abdominal segments, and the presence of 10 ancestral setae on femur and a clade comprising Hygrobiidae, Amphizoidae, and Dytiscidae by the presence of thin and elongate caudal tentorial arms, a very strong musculus verti- copharyngalis and a longitudinally divided adductor tendon of the mandible. A highly modified foregut, reduced terminal spiracles VIII and the presence of tubular gills are features which distinguish hygrobiid larvae from those of other groups of Dytiscoidea (i.e, Amphizoidae, Noteridae, Dytiscidae).

Nycteus oviformis is newly recorded from the Maritime provinces. Additional locality data are provided for Eucinetus haemor- rhoidalis (Germar) and Eucinetus morio LeConte. Five species of Scirtidae, Cyphon ruficollis (Say), Priono- cyphon discoideus (Say), Sacodes pulchella (Guérin-Méneville), Elodes maculicollis Horn, and Sarabandus robustus (LeConte) are added to the New Brunswick faunal list. Sarabandus robustus is newly recorded from Canada; Cyphon ruficollis, P. discoideus and S. pulchella are new for the Maritime provinces. Collec- tion and habitat data, and distribution maps are presented for these species.
