Cork, Republic of Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> 21 Belvoirview Park, Belfast BT8 7BL, Northern Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> Abstract Since the 1997 Irish Coleoptera – a revised and annotated list, 59 species of Staphylinidae have been added to the Irish list, 11 species confirmed, a number have been deleted or require to be deleted, and the status of some species and names require correction. Notes are provided on the deletion, correction or status of 63 species, and a revised check-list of 710 species is provided with a generic index. Species listed, or not listed, as Irish in the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera (2nd edition), in comparison with this list, are discussed. The Irish status of Gabrius sexualis Smetana, 1954 is questioned, although it is retained on the list awaiting further investgation. Introduction The Staphylinidae (rove-beetles) comprise the largest family of beetles in Ireland (with 621 species originally recorded by Anderson, Nash and O’Connor (1997)) and in the world (with 55,440 species cited by Grebennikov and Newton (2009)). Since the publication in 1997 of Irish Coleoptera - a revised and annotated list by Anderson, Nash and O’Connor, there have been a large number of additions (59 species), confirmation of the presence of several species based on doubtful old records, a number of deletions and corrections, and significant nomenclatural and taxonomic changes to the list of Irish Staphylinidae. -

Males of Cladocera are rare but they are of considerable value in reaching accurate diagnoses of species. I have illustrated the few males I have .found in the samples. Notes on the distribution of Augyles marmota (Kiesenwetter, 1850) (Heteroceridae), Trichodes punctatus Fischer von Waldheim, 1829 (Cleridae), Laena reitteri Weise, 1877 (Tenebrionidae), Brachysomus ornatus Stierlin, 1892, Lixus cylindrus (Fabricius, 1781) (Curculionidae), Mylacomorphus globus (Seidlitz, 1868) (Curculionidae) are given. G. de viedmal and M. L. els son' Several works on the order Coleoptera have appeared in recent years, some of them creating new superfamilies, others modifying the constitution of these or creating new families, finally others are genera1 revisions of the order. The authors believe that the current classification of this order, incorporating these changes would prove useful. The following outline is based mainly on Crowson (1960, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1973) and Crowson and Viedma (1964). For characters used on classification see Viedma (1972) and for family synonyms Abdullah (1969). Major features of this conspectus are the rejection of the two sections of Adephaga (Geadephaga and Hydradephaga), based on Bell (1966) and the new sequence of Heteromera, based mainly on Crowson (1966), with adaptations. -

Studies on the fauna of Noteridae (2), Gyrinidae (5), Haliplidae (8), Hydrophil- water beetles of such regions as Stavropol Krai and North idae (17), Hydrochidae (1) and Spercheidae (1). New Ossetia have not been published yet. Moreover, there are sampling sites are given for 55 species. A total of 30 only scattered records of species in Chechnya and Ingush- species are recorded for the first time in North Ossetia. -

Vol. 4, No. 1, January 2009___________ Scope: Munis Entomology & Zoology publishes a wide variety of papers on all aspects of Entomology and Zoology from all of the world, including mainly studies on systematics, taxonomy, nomenclature, fauna, biogeography, biodiversity, ecology, morphology, behavior, conservation, paleobiology and other aspects are appropriate topics for papers submitted to Munis Entomology & Zoology. Submission of Manuscripts: Works published or under consideration elsewhere (including on the internet) will not be accepted. At first submission, one double spaced hard copy (text and tables) with figures (may not be original) must be sent to the Editors, Dr. Hüseyin Özdikmen for publication in MEZ. All manuscripts should be submitted as Word file or PDF file in an e-mail attachment. If electronic submission is not possible due to limitations of electronic space at the sending or receiving ends, unavailability of e-mail, etc., we will accept “hard” versions, in triplicate, accompanied by an electronic version stored in a floppy disk, a CD-ROM. Review Process: When submitting manuscripts, all authors provides the name, of at least three qualified experts (they also provide their address, subject fields and e-mails). Then, the editors send to experts to review the papers. The review process should normally be completed within 45-60 days. After reviewing papers by reviwers: Rejected papers are discarded. For accepted papers, authors are asked to modify their papers according to suggestions of the reviewers and editors. Final versions of manuscripts and figures are needed in a digital format. -

XIE & P. Yu Abstract A new species, Amphizoa smetanai (Coleoptera: Amphizoidae), is described from Emci Shan, Sichuan Province, China. The adult female of Amphizoa davidi LUCAS is described for the first time in this paper. A revised key to the adults of all six known species (three North American and three Chinese) of Amphizoa is provided. Key words: Coleoptera, Amphizoidae, Amphizoa davidi, Amphizoa smetanai, new species, China. Introduction The family Amphizoidae includes only one genus, Amphizoa LECONTE, 1853, and presently it consists of six known species. There are three species in western North America: A. insolens LECONTE, 1853, A. striata VAN DYKE, 1927, and A. lecontei MATTHEWS, 1872, and three in China: A. davidi LUCAS, 1882, A. sinica Yu & STORK, 1991, and A. smetanai sp.n. In North America, amphizoids are restricted to the western states and provinces from Alaska south to southern California and east to central Wyoming and Colorado. The Chinese species occur in Jilin and Sichuan. -

Internal and external structures of the head of 3'''' instar larvae of Amphizoa lecontei Matthews 1872 were examined and interpreted phylogenetically. 2.) The presence of strongly developed, complex ventral pharyngeal dilator muscles is con- sidered as a possible synapomorphy of Trachypachini and Hydradephaga excl. Gyrinidae. 3.) Caudal tentorial arms, the complete loss of the lacinia, and the origin of the galea from the unsclerotized mesal side of palpomere I are considered as synapomorphies of a monophy- letic unit comprising Trachypachini, Noteridae, Amphizoidae, Hygrobiidae, and Dytiscidae. 4.) Separation of the posterior tentorial grooves as found in larvae of Haliplidae, Noteridae, Amphizoidae, Hygrobiidae, and Dytiscidae is a feature vi^hich has probably evolved several times independently. 5.) The articulation of the maxilla with an elongated, flexible process of the anterior margin of the head capsule is a possible synapomorphy of Noteridae, Amphizoidae, Hygrobiidae, and Dytiscidae. -

Charles R. Darwin Abstract Here we review Charles Darwin’s relation to beetles and developments in coleopteran systematics in the last two centuries. Darwin was an enthusiastic beetle collector. He used beetles to illustrate different evolutionary phenomena in his major works, and astonishingly, an entire sub-chapter is dedicated to beetles in “The Descent of Man”. During his voyage on the Beagle, Darwin was impressed by the high diversity of beetles in the tropics and expressed, to his surprise, that the majority of species were small and inconspicuous. Despite his obvious interest in the group he did not get involved in beetle taxonomy and his theoretical work had little immediate impact on beetle classification. The development of taxonomy and classification in the late 19th and earlier 20th centuries was mainly characterised by the exploration of new character systems (e.g., larval features, wing venation). In the mid 20th century Hennig’s new methodology to group lineages by derived characters revolutionised systematics of Coleoptera and other organisms. As envisioned by Darwin and Ernst Haeckel, the new Hennigian approach enabled systematists to establish classifications truly reflecting evolution.
